Elliptical machine

I picked those calories based on things I read and what you need to lose weight, what is a good amount to have each day then? When I write my stuff down it is usually about 300-400 cal for breakfast and 500 lunch and then 500 dinner give or take a few. I don't really snack on much. I could add in some healthy snacks too.

Yea, but 1200 calories did not take you to 220+ lbs right?

where in Washington are you? I am trying to lose about the same amount as you, and exercise also, sounds like we have the same things in common, do you take any diet pills?

I can feel some inches coming off but no weight loss.

I believe in a post steve said once, would you rather want to look fit at 200 or look unconditioned at 150? Weight is just a number and what your really trying to achieve besides becoming a more healthier person is to look better not just to see the numbers go down. Hope that helped some

I think on a daily basis I've always eaten about 1800 calories, I didn't gain the weight by overeating, I gained it when my thyroid medication got messed up and I gained 45 pounds in 5 months. Well, then I was depressed and didn't exercise or do much, you know the poor pitiful me thing, and I gained more weight. Probably if I think about it now, we tend to eat too much on the weekends so that caught up with me and now here I am.

I work in the Seattle area and live North of Everett.

I tried taking the Hoodia for appetite control and I actually really liked it and it worked but I am trying to go all natural now and not putting anything else in my body. I take a daily weight loss vitamin with green tea.

I think will push myself a little harder on the elliptical, I don't think I push enough and then I will see if there are any results.

Thanks for your replies

green tea

I guess I am looking for that magic pill, I struggle with green tea, I know it's good for you but I have a lot of side effects, I grew up in the Seattle area, but movied away, too much rain, but do get homesick sometimes...I have a low thyroid (the only medication I take), not sure if all this is helping me? I slowly gained 70-80 pounds over the years, and now is just seems to want to stay there, I think you need to look healthy in addition to pounds lost!

carrots work great for apetite control! at least for me i nibble on some peanuts too so far so good for me!

10-15 minutes? Are you even breaking a sweat? Anyways, I find most excerise machines to be too boring to use for longer periods of time. Go swimming, ride a bike or even roller blade.. the time goes by faster and you'll get more out of it.

I will go buy some carrots and try that.

After 10 minutes I am sweating a lot, that's pathetic huh!!!! I know I hear other people say they stay on for an hour and I can't even imagine that. I am definitly out and shape or doing something wrong.

My problem with other types of exercise is that I am too busy. I get up at 4am to get the train by 6am and don't get home until 6:30pm then I try to have some family time and that leaves me very little time to do anything else. THat's why I started walking a mile or so on my lunch hours when it is not raining is this rainy city which is seems to do all the time.

everyone starts somewhere... i remember when it was hard doing 10 mins. It doesnt really matter too much what type of cardio your doing... the most import thing is that you're doing it.

Elliptical Machines

Okay the gym that I use has the Precos machine all I do is go there and click the option for the weight loss program which is #8 on most ellipticals and just do that 35 minute work out walk a nice pace on the treadmil for about 30 minutes and then leave.

Is that good enough or should I be doing more? I hear people saying how the put up the resistance on the elliptical machines but I dont know how to or the reason that needs to be done.

Also what excercises can I do to work the flab under my arm?!?! Are there any machines I can use at the gym to help me with this?!?!

So any tips would be useful.

I also started exercising on a Precor elliptical a couple on months ago and use the 30 minute interval program which has more, but shorter peaks.

I was intially puzzled by how easy the work out seemed. I would expend about 250-300 calories without going more than 70% of max HR and hardly break a sweat. Other people seemed to be doing the same - loafing along chatting, watching TV and one was even reading!! I am of the old fashioned "no pain no gain" mentality so I had to do something.

I started using the same program but put the resistance up for both the high and low levels. If you put it up at the beginning of the program, it stays at that level for the rest of the 30 minutes.

I gradually built up to 530 calories in the same 30 minute program. I run my HR up the max and average about 80% for the whole 30 minutes. When I finish there is a pool of sweat all round the machine and I have clean of the handles etc for the next user - now that's a work out.

I jump rope 3 times per week as part of my cardio workout. I love it!! It really seems to get my blood pumping, and my lungs working.

Ellipticals DO feel easier, but apparently its the person's heart rate rather than how hard it feels, that counts. The chest strap heart monitors are considered much more accurate, but you can get an idea with the machine's handle heart rate monitor. Check what your heart rate should be for your age and weight in a zone from 70% to 85% of your heart rate. There are calculators online to help you figure this out.

As you get in better shape, you'll want to push yourself harder, assuming your heart is OK. According to the elliptical I work on at the gym, I am constantly in the "danger zone" every time I exercise, even when I'm doing steady state.

If you're at all fit, you have to ignore the recommendations on the machine. Keep in mind they're protecting themselves from a lawsuit, too. They don't want someone with a heart condition suing them because they "recommended" a rate that gave an exerciser a heart attack.

Most Precor machines I've seen have an up and down button for the resistance. They're great for simulating hills.

I do 30 minutes on the Precor ellipticals in my gym at up to 85% max heart rate. At the end of that you could wring me out. I think their danger zone is probably based on 80% times (220 - age), which is a reasonable definition, but obviously it's going to vary according to the individual.

I also find that if you get your arms putting in a shift of work rather than just following the levers it feels like you are working out harder.

elliptical--how much expected to lose

hi there,
how is everyone?
i am new to this site, and hopefully it will aid in my weight loss journey!
i am in my 3d year of university, and unfortunately being way from home, and having no time to sit down and eat, caused me to gain a lot of weight, with my quick fix meal plans.
i am trying to lose about 50 pounds..
i am 5'2, weight 151. and according to my body fat % i want to weight about 110, at max.

anyways, i am goig to purchase an elliptical, used however, i cant put out more than 200.

i just wanted to ask people, howi should use it? i have used the elliptical before at the gym, and i normally , if its a ilght weight one, put it at level 10, so i burn about 1000, calories in 1 hour. im sure the calories are a bit off, but it still makes me happy that im burning atleast more than 500 most likely.

is this a good idea?
i have shoddy knees, and i dont like to put toomuch strain on them. surprisingly the elliptical is better for them, than the treadmill is.

i was planning on using it for an hour, every single day. and eating more fruits and vegetables, but still not changing my way of eating totally.

i never overate, or ate too much cholesterol or fattening foods. i am a vegetarian, most of my diet is indian food. the wya i gained weight was, having no time for breakfast, eating a really heavy lunch, and then not eatin anythin for dinnre. and sittin around in my room studying all day.

please just let me know if an hour of exercise ont he elliptical, will give me results.

my aim is atleaaaaast 5 pounds/month. is an hour/daily, going to give me that kind of goal?

my aim is atleaaaaast

I tried IM'ing you, it said you weren't on (my attempt at a joke).

To my knowledge, to get a high quality eliptical trainer would cost a lot of money.

I'm curious, does your university offer any gyms or gym memberships? My university offers a $60 per semester fee, which isn't bad at all (when comparing to actual gym memberships).

If you are going to buy a machine, its quality probably will not be up to par for those offered at the gym.

I use ellipticals for interval cardio all the time. I push them very hard -- I'm not sure how a home machine would fare, but it might work out very well for you.

If you're 151 lbs., I doubt very much you're burning 1,000 calories an hour, unless you're cranking it up to around 180 to 200 rpm. But you still can get a great workout on these, and they're not tough on your knees.
