Dropping leg regiment

Hello,

Right now I am weight training 3 times a week. I do chest, abs, back the first day; shoulders, arms, obliques the second day and legs the third day.

I am considering dropping the leg day altogether to speed up my upper body development. However, I fear that my legs will grow weak and will be more prone to injury. Is there a cardio/short-cut to maintain legs, so that I can do only upper body weight training?

Thanks

I don't want skipping legs altogether. I just don't want to weight-train them. Maybe some cardio exercises or else?

Bad idea... legs are the biggest muscles in the body, and when you work them out they release way more muscle-building "stuff" (can't remember what it's called) than the other muscles in your body. Basically, by working legs not only do you prevent yourself from looking like a hulk on stilts, but you also develop the rest of your body faster. Oh, and it burns more calories than working any other body part as well as boosts your metabolism more.

What cnatboy said. Remember, you don't have to spend a lot of time on them. 2 sets of 12 reps squats, and 2 sets of 6 reps deadlifts (plus warmups as needed) 2 times a week is enough to keep at least some growth going...

all good replies. cardio does not train the legs like weights do. squats and deads make the whole body grow due to GH release and the stress of moving that much weight like that.

Being that your legs are the biggest muscle in the body, you need to develop them with weight training in order to get the best results from your weight training regimine. If you drop legs, the rest of your development will slow down as well.

Trust what MoK said. Full body workouts are great for your development because the are focused around compound movements. Then if you want to target a specific area, add a couple isolation sets at the end of your workout.

Someone once said that not training the legs can cut results in half. As Dan John says, "the body is one piece." ;)

Ditto on what malkore said.

Do not skip out on legs.

Training your legs will release hormones which will increase your overall body composition. You will be taking a step backwards if you exclude legs from your routine.

I'm def not as up on splits as some people here, since the extent of any split I've done was just upper/lower, but is it normal/is there any reason at all, to do abs one day and obliques another? Just checking, because that sounds like a weird split to me.

I don't see a reason to separate abs either. some people think the more complex your split gets, the better it is.
but complex doesn't necessarily mean 'intelligent'..it can just as easily mean 'chaotic'.

There are basic splits that people do, lower/upper, push/pull, opposing muscles...aka...quads+hams or chest+back, and corresponding splits...aka...chest+tris or back+bis. There is no need to split abs and obliques. If you do a core split, I'd only separate lower back since it is utilized so much in squats/deadlifts/bent over rows...etc.

I'd suggest keeping a basic push/pull, lower/upper, or a full body workout. Personally, I do full body 3x per week, and then core exercises for my in between days when I do more intense cardio.
