Don't try this at home

Well not really to plan but starting playtime early. Wife saw size of handles when they arrived today and decided to give them early rather than try hiding them.

Squats
Warm up 1 x 10 x 70kg. Would be more but sweated up getting stuff ready
3 x 10 x 110kg
Farmers walk 20 metre stretch carry turns
6 with 20kg + handles, 2 x 4 with 30kg + handles
Lunges
3 x 10 with 10kg + handles

The handles are longer than I invisaged, and I haven't weighed them but they are less than 10kg.
Not sure I will be able to do fly press with them due to length but if I put bench on incline it should make it easier.

Well this week is turning into a total mess training wise. More playtime than real session this time around. Took the farmers walk handles into work with enough weight to have 40kg on each side following a bit of curiousity.

Supposed to be doing bench this evening not sure about that as shoulders are dead after doing some practice turns with handle and 40kg a side, which is really difficult for a second time around. I know the systme is to get the fronts touching for the turn but knowing when to get them apart again is a bit of guesswork and I don't have it right yet.
Was demoing single arm deadlift and as close to standard deadlift as I could with the handles to a colleague as well. by the time I had made a laughing stock of myself in front of colleagues by doing farmers walk none of them could have matched and some single arms with 60kg on the handle when my forearms were already dead.

Not a proper session, virtually pure playing and getting stuff wrong, but I enjoyed it, and gave my colleagues a good laugh. Something a more normal person would be concerned about, I work in an environment most people would consider us weird and I am considered weird here.

See? 40 is no big deal! Sounds like a lovely break although not so sure about haggis... hard to get anything that smells like that close to my face, let alone into my mouth.

I was shocked to find I like haggis. The idea of what's in it put me off ever getting one, but I tried a sample at Costco and really enjoyed it.

New stuff going as well as I should expect.

You outdid me on squats this week. Congratulations *grumbles under breath*

I've never done lunges with fat grips, but I can see how that'd be tricky.

Haggis is definately worth a try. You will have better Costco over there too, deeply envious. It is one of those foods that manages to take horrid ingredients and make lovely food, black pudding is another example.
One food that really defines the Scots though was perfectly detailed by Marcus Bridstock 'Only the Scots would scotch an egg, " I know what that egg needs, to be wrapped in meat and deep fried in batter.'

My birthday meal was healthy eating personnified.
Starter - Deep fried haggis balls in batter with gravy and salad (bet you weren't expecting salad in Scotland)
Main - Large deep fried haddock and chips with more salad and tartare sauce.
Desert - Deep fried mars bar and ice cream
All accompanied with Irn Bru
After a meal like that you know no matter how you looked going in you will appear to have swallowed a bowling ball going out.
In case you were wondering it was delicious from start to finish.

I won't be doing lunges with fat gripz again for a good while either. I think on a normal size bar, say on dumbells it would be OK. The farmers walk handles I have have handles already thicker than a normal bar so th grips end up with a 2cm or so gap. Holding that in lunges was too much. Using the walk handles on lunges is good though.
My legs and back are my strength, always have been. Chest and shoulders are pathetic, so I am constantly chasing you on bench and lagging some way behind.
My squats are likely to be a lot closer to normal than deadlift this time round, as there is nothing different on them, while I will be fat gripping the deadlifts.
If the hype is to be believed I will have huge arms from using them. Reality is I am hoping for stronger grip and will be content with that. Definately going to rip me out of my comfort zone and I like that.

I haven't seen it at Cosco, but then again, I haven't been looking for it. I'll have to see next time I'm there. I've never even heard of black pudding though.

Also known as blood pudding.
Black pudding is a blend of onions, pork fat, oatmeal, flavourings - and blood (usually from a pig). Googled black pudding recipe and followed the BBC link for this.

How's that for appetising.
In appearance it is like a large sausage, you cut it into slices and shallow fry them. The slices are reddish in colour, as you would expect with main ingredient of blood, it turns black when cooked and tastes spectacular as only such insane food can.

Cheaper versions use grisly meat instead of some of the blood and that makes it nasty, but the good stuff is soft and succulent. Not for those concerned about losing weight though.

I find the double standard of food funny. Offer people grubs to eat and the shy away, prawns which are grubs from the sea, perfectly OK. Haggis and black pudding are questionable but sausages and burgers are fine even though many are the less favourable cuts of meat. Processed food makes balance harder in many ways but as long as sensible I think it's OK.

Found the best thing for haggis is boiling in foil then adding rice to the water so it collects some of the taste. Really nice finshed dinner and not pricey either.

You are all braver men than I - of course not being a man is a handy excuse! Nice that you gave Ryan something to shoot for, Tony!

Good to have competition as a motivator, even if you don't see them. In fairness braver and stupidity are often one and the same, so you can console yourself as being brighter than either of us.
One old training partner I had demonstrated my distaste for moderation and love of excess beautifully. I am a weight chaser, always have loved to go heavy as I can, he was a rep chaser, liked to improve endurance by going for reps. This combination usually results in a sensible moderate training program as both give way a little and meet in the middle. Instead we did predominantly drop sets starting at 1 or 2 RM removing a bit andother 1 or 2 reps and keep going until there is nothing left to move or move it with, giving high weight and reps combined. Not found anyone that insane since, very disappointing really.

Today I am reminded that DOMS can literally be a pain in the posterior.
With the years I have been training I am very used to aching more on change over week, especially if there has been a short rest. Over-training means increasing the risk of prolonging DOMS. However it is a good while since I have added totally new movements to my program and tried to keep intensity high on this and I didn't factor that in.
The system of run, then do squat workout with new activity and wake up not feeling too bad didn't ring any alarm bells. I was feeling so good that I went for my lunch time run, a bit below minimum pace but even that didn't raise any flags. A few hours later despite doing proper stretches etc. I started to ache, and it continued to get worse throughout the evening, not helped when my wife gave me a gentle kick up the rear messing around which hurt like hell.
Today I have the combined effect of all of the training this week hitting me, so I am walking like a cripple whose been anally invaded and feeling very stupid. Serves me right.

There was a bit of debate on whether to run today, because I still ache like hell, the decision however came down to something else.
There are occasions when getting something 95% right is still a total screw up, today is one of those. Last night I put washing on including towel and running kit, they wouldn't be dry but that could be doen at work. This morning grabbed towel, vest and shorts, put them in my bag. Arrived at work laid out towel, vest and noticed the shorts felt strange, because they belong to my son. I would likely fit one leg into these shorts and noting else so running is off for today, something to do with not wanting to or being allowed to run around in public without shorts.

The deadlift session will be even more weird and I know it.

Dang, the women on your route would have enjoyed the view of a nicely rounded/fit tush. Men are so mean sometimes!
