does anyone use smith machines for any exercises?

I don't necessarily think you need to stop using it; just realize that the smith machine takes all the stabilizer muscles out of the equation. Your body is only controlling the up and down, not the lateral or forward motion of the bar.

A squat with a bar will recruit more muscles both for primary movement and secondary movement...therefore challenging your muscular system more greatly.

lol yup, your as weak as ur weakest point, and for you its your stabilizers! and you core is probably lacking also.. smith machines are great for after your free compound exercises to help isolate, but i still like free weights to isolate. i use the smith maching for weighted dips and the leg press, that's about it.

I use the smith for bench and squats - no problems on my joints. I began using the smith because I did not have a workout partner or someone to give me a spot. No, you are not using as many stabilizers but yes you can isolate. I have added plenty of size using the smith.

i just use the smith for calves. i've tried everything else on it, didnt feel right. prefer my free weights and power rack :)

Metallica: I don't see any harm in continuing to do squats using the smith machine. However; like you said, you have no balance to stabilization. To build your stability and balance you'll need to start with weightless squats, lunges and perhaps squats with dumbells.

Try some work on stability pads as well.
