Do You NEED to Exercise To Lose Weight?

Do you really need to lose weight to lose weight, because i have a treadmill, and i would like to use it, but i have four siblings and it would be weird since i havent told them i want to lose weight. So should i just use it or can i just not exercise and just diet?

No.

You should though, theres lots of benefits that go beyond weight loss. You also probably want to add in a strength training program if you are able (even body weight exercises are better than nothing).

Diet is the most important factor to fat loss, but exercise helps and even for thin people its not healthy to ignore exercise.

Look at all the success stories in Before and After. The majority of people who had amazing losses used diet and exercise consistantly.

if you think your siblings are going to tease you or something, just ignore them. Its tough, but hey when you look good you can laugh at them. You could also run or walk or bike outside (if its a possibility) and avoid them.

Yes :p

Funnily enough, I'm in a very similar position: I have four, very active, siblings, all of whom are skinny as rakes. I've always been the bigger, lazier one, and they're all a little shocked when I started eating better and told them I was starting to lose weight.

I'm about a big a fan of exercise as a turkey is to Thanksgiving (lolol timelyreference) but I've been trying to do a bit here and there where I can. Invariably I end up sore and exhausted and fatigued and about ready to collapse from the sheer strain of it: but each day I get a little bit faster, a little bit stronger, and take a bit more control of my life.

I'd say that most of my weight loss so far has come from the way I changed my diet, but that the greater level of self-confidence and just plain happiness that I have resulted from exercise. I'm not happy that I can't eat my favourite foods all day, but I am happy that I'm feeling better about myself.

None of that made much sense, but what I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't 'not' exercise just because of other people, be they siblings or strangers. It's your body, and if you want to feel better, use the treadmill. If you just want to lose the weight, and you're really averse to using it, then don't: but your results may disappoint you.

I say if you want to lose weight and maintain it, it's probably going to be a lot easier if you build in exercise.

Wow. A lot of issues there. :)

Are you really thinking about giving up exercise just because you don't want your siblings to see you losing weight? Isn't that kind of like cutting off your nose to spite your face?

I"m not trying to be harsh or rude ... but really? Seriously? You would compromise being healthy just so your siblings won't know?

I would really encourage you to think about that mindset. :)

That said, is exercise necessary to lose weight? Technically, no.

But if you want to maximize fat loss and minimize muscle loss, then you must exercise.
If you want to avoid a "skinny fat" look - that's flabby but skinny - you must exercise.
If you want to reap the health benefits of being in shape, then you must exercise.

Are you really willing to give up those things just to keep your sibs from seeing you use a treadmill?

to lose weight? no

To be healthy? yes

To look fit? yes

I see it all the time, those who don't work out will have muscle imbalances, pains, aches, knee and back problems, etc etc. the list goes on. Rather than go into some long spiel about the benefits, i'll just keep it to the point. Exercise.

I understand your fears about being judged because I know alot of people look at the fat people in the gym and be like "what are they doing here?!" and judging us and what not..thats why I was always scared to go to the gym..I didnt want people judging me or thinking I looked stupid.

But honestly...isnt that where I belong if I am overweight? at the gym..working out and getting healthy?! I mean people are going to judge overweight people no matter what..that is our society, sad to say. If they see a heavy person at the gym theyre going to wonder what they are doing there..but then if they see a heavy person @ McDonalds theyre gonna joke like oh gees they dont need to be here or of course they are here.

People can be assholes. Don't worry what other people think of you. You are working out and getting healthy for you, they have NOTHING to make fun of.

For me exercise is amazing. as much as I hate it..food is more of my enemy. I have a harder time sticking to a healthy diet plan when I dont work out. Working out keeps my mind off that snack craving and keeps me focused on my goals.

Good luck on your journey.

ive been in the same shoes as you, kiddo.

i was once 245 lbs, high school student sitting my ass all day playing maplestory. now im a 178 (fit) college student out to do things that i wouldnt think i would have done.

sadly i also have siblings (3) and parents that arent the best supportive person. my mom actually would go against me when i told her im going to the gym, she would reply "go tomorrow its too late (when its only 6pm)" but whatever i just go to get a break. yes it was annoying and she got over it. she look forward to my results now.

my suggestion is just do it man. if they say something, let them say it. they arent going to lose the weight for you, you are.
