Do you get a stomach ache?

Hi Everyone,

I've been following a rather simple diet - higher protein, lower carbs and of course lower calories.

For the last week by the end of the day I have a stomach ache - almost like bloating (like gas or something maybe) and then when I wake up the pain is still there and it hurts until I relieve myself - which doesn't happen till I've been up for a bit and have had some coffee.

I heard that drinking protein shakes can cause stomach discomfort. and I drink 1 of those a day usually (but it happens when I don't drink one too)

Does anyone else have this problem?

I use to get stomach aches before - but that's what bags of chips and candy will do when mixed with beer :drool5:

But now I'm eating heathly.

Maybe I should add a fiber supplement to my diet?

Fiber is good if youre having trouble staying regular with your adjusted diet. There are a lot of foods naturally high in fiber which you should try and work into your diet plan, but important note if you supplement is to do it in moderation. If you do too much too fast, its not pretty.

Other than that, why don't you try and drop the protein shake and see if that helps? Instead, have a chicken breast, or some other high protein source. If youre still having problems down the road, or they get more severe, it would be wise to have a doctor help diagnose the problem.

Sounds to me like you're doing the whole supplement thing and not eating enough real food. Protein shakes, fiber supplements, etc.

Why not just eat real food? :) There are other benefits from eating real food rather than relying on shakes, powders, and pills. One of them is the bulk of the food itself, which facilitates the whole digestive process .. and might help with your issues.

If you eat the right kinds of foods, you generally don't need supplements ...

HAHA - I'm sooo indecicive, I never know what to eat!

I eat 4-5 meals a day - 1 of those meals is usually a protein shake. The rest is real food - so I'm not supplementing THAT much (it's not like I'm eating 'food bars' everymeal).

Breakfest today was canteloupe, cottage cheese and 1 slice of whole grain bread - and most of my meals are mix of things like that.

Could you be lactose intolerant? My husband was having stomach issues and they went away when he switched to lactose free milk & uses lactaid for cheese. If you're using milk in your protein shakes it could be an issue.

I've had those kind of issues before when I started on a higher protein diet. For me, drinking an extra helping or two of water helped a lot. I recognized the pain from a few times before when I cooked my rice without enough water, so It acted like it was pulling it out of the rest of my meal while in my gut. not a fun time.
