Do Protein Shakes Aid Weight Loss??

A LITTLE NEW TO THE GAME!... BUT I'VE ALWAYS WORKED OUT AND TRIED TO STAY FIT. FOR THE PAST COUPLE MONTHS I'VE TAKEN WORKING OUT, EATING HEALTHIER AND BECOMING FIT A LOT MORE SERIOUSLY. I NOW HIT UP THE GYM 4-5 NIGHTS A WEEK, ABOUT 2 HRS EACH TIME.

I TALKED TO SO MANY PEOPLE ABOUT THIS ALREADY BUT WOULD LIKE TO GET MORE TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS... MY SISTER-IN-LAW TOLD ME SHE TAKES 100% WHEY PROTEIN GOLD SHAKES RIGHT AFTER EACH WORK OUT. I'VE TASTED IT AND IT DOESN'T TASTE BAD AT ALL... BUT WHAT I'M SCARED OF IS ACTUALLY GAINING WEIGHT FROM INTAKING THE PROTEIN SHAKE. IF I ADD THE PROTEIN SHAKE TO MY POST-WORKOUT EVERY NIGHT, WILL THIS ENHANCE MY BODY'S ABILITY TO LOSE WEIGHT BUT STILL BECOME TONED? I JUST DON'T WANT TO GET BIGGER! PLEASE HELP!

Umm.. turn CAPS off. lol!

unless you are roiding, I would lower your workout times and take a high GI carb hit with some protein post workout.
Protein will 'feed' your muscles. If you dont want to get much bigger but you want to get "toned" you should incorporate some cardio into your training and lower your caloric intake.

At this point you are probably overtraining. 5 nights a week? 2 hours?..

Definitely cut back the workout time. 2 hours is too much unless you are an athlete and have a coach by your side.

Adding a protein shake after your workout is a fine idea. Will it cause you to gain weight? I don't know. It depends on how many calories, carbs, proteins, and fats you are already consuming. It depends on when you eat and how often and a host of other things.

Okay So I Should Lower My Workout Time Each Night Then? But... It Seems As If My Workout itself takes 2 Hours... It Doesn't Feel Like I Do too much? I Spend My First 30-40 Mins In The Gym Doing Cardio, Usually Either On The Eliptical And/or Treadmill. After That I Work On My Abs For Another 30 Mins Or So, Then Do Light Free Weights, And Lastly Squats And A Few Other Leg And Thigh Workouts. If There's A Sauna Around, I Hit That Up For Just About 10-15 Minutes. How Exactly Should I Cut Down My Work Out? Suggestions? And Oops... uh Oh, Forgot To Turn Off My Caps! So Used To It!!... Next Time!

You need to get a more structured workout. Perhaps a 3f/3c or 4f/2c split (f = free weights, c = cardio), but also one that is more than "I do some of this and some of that."

I'd recommend a pre-made workout, such as Homegrown Muscle (HGM), Art of Waterbury (AoW), Anti-Body Building Hypertrophy I & II (ABBH I & II) and many more available out there.

Generally, your workouts should be around an hour long.

Secondly, protein doesn't aid in weight loss, it aids in muscle develpment and maintenance.

Solid matter food (SMF) also, but SMF requires time, energy, aka, calories to break down, so while SMF contributes calories, it's less than a protein shake, which is liquid.

30 minutes of abs is a lot also! 30 minutes of abs five days a week? Wow...your abs are definitely being overtrained.

I have a protein shake almost every day (Nitrotech or Designer Whey) and it hasn't caused me to get any bigger.

Women generally don't get bigger because muscle build-up is a function of testosterone and women don't have enough natural T to get big muscles.

If you calculate the calories from protein shakes into your daily intake, you'll be fine. Its not about shakes making you fat, its about calories.

Your workout shouldn't be so long (unless in special circumstances). 30-40 minutes of cardio and then weights... too much.

I'd rather see you start with a full body routine 3 days per week. On days you do not do strength training do 30-45 minutes medium intensity cardio or 60 minutes light intensity cardio. On days you do strength train add 15 minutes of medium-high intensity cardio at the end. Keep at least one day per week for rest.
