Do Fast Twitch Fibers get worked at the end of a long set?

If you do a long set of 15 or 20, on the last few repetitions when you're straining, are the fast twitch fibers recruited to get the weight up? If they are, how would your body know the difference between the strain of lifting a heavy weight for 3 reps and the strain of doing your last 3 reps in a long set?
