a month ago i made up my mind that i was tired of inching closer to 300lbs (was at 281) and it was time to do something about it ... it took a bit to convince my wife, but she is trying as well with me ...

being the normal new person to dieting .. i just tried the first 'diet' that i had heard about ... was atkins ... after being on it for close to 3 weeks .. i had lost down to 263 ... but in that time i was also reading and studying more .. because i just couldn't beleive that fruits and some veggies could be 'bad' for you ...

so now i am in limbo .. while trying to get a better overall understanding of 'healthy' eating ... while exercising ... to reach my final goal of loosing over 100lbs ...

i have started to change over to just watching my total calorie intake ... and keeping the fat level down .. and protein around a certain number ... but i am still not quite sure if i am heading in the right direction ...

from what i figure .. i should be getting around 3,000 cals a day to loose some weight ...

but, (thats the key word) ... though i try to eat close to that, i rarely get over 2,000 a day when eating fresh fruits, veggies ... and meats ...

last week we signed up at a local 24 hour fitness place ... and have set up a schedule to go there 3 times a week and try to work out for at least an hour each time we are there ...

i have almost decided to throw my scale out the window though ... after changing the diet plans around a bit .. i made the mistake of weighing myself .. and i had gone from 263 up to 268 ... which almost made me break down and quit the diet all together ...

my main issue with eating right is how i work ... i have one of those jobs that half the year i work 7 days a week .. other half the year i work 2 a week so getting into a normal pattern is hard to do for me ... and a lot of my meals end up being 'convience' type ones ... except for breakfast .. i am making myself get up each morning and fix a nice one .. with what i consider good ... a whole grain cereal, milk, banana ... or some lean ham, and scrambled eggs ...

Devil I know how you feel before I started Weight watchers below 310 I started watching what I eat went up 4 lbs. one thing I learning is that size of what I am eating was big sub fan I started eating more fruits and more veg what was never in my diet untill now. I also learned 1lbs is = 3100 cals to lose that you need to burn that much cals. Aktins diet is good but I donnot like that they say no fruist and veg for phase one you need them in your diet. I would say check out the flex plan on wieght watchers it explans meal sizes and point count is easer then cal count. stick with it I know the feeling I went to gym did hour cardio if you have yahoo chris_andrea69 is nickname if you want to IM me

i will have to read up on the weight watchers point thing some more ...

just reinstalled my computer don't have yahoo back on it yet ... will be installing it later today most likely .... will send you an invite when i do .

Spend some time reading the stickied threads in the nutrition forum here - Nutrition is not as complicated as many of the fad diets out there would like you to believe...

thanks, i have been reading through them since yesterday ... most of it is making sense ...

the hardest part is convincing myself that it is right .. instead of the typical stuff that has always been drilled into my head about dieting and junk.

I'm not saying that this forum is the be-all-and-end-all when it comes to weight loss and information - or that everything that is posted here is correct and should be taken as gospel... there really is no one size fits all approach to weight loss... you have to do what works best for your body, and current situation.

However... especially when it comes to the stickied threads - we try to steer people towards lifestyle changes and not diet mindsets -which is a tough one for a lot of people. A lifestyle change means more calories and slower weight loss, but I can't find one source that says slower weight loss is bad... More calories is sustainable long term.. and gives you room to adjust down the road...

that is what i am trying to convince myself of as well right now ... i understand it will be better in the long run ...

i have gotten to the point with myself ... that i am sick of being this big ... and want it gone ... but, after having tried several of the 'fad' diets in the past ... i have came to an understanding that healthy should be the main goal ...

i just never figured out what i should be eating calorie wise ... till a few days ago ... and mostly was shocked that if i figured it right ... i should be eating around 2200 calories a day with around 80 g to 100 g of protein minimum ... and a max of 50 to 70 g of fat .. and the rest filled with carbs ... to loose weight ... after always hearing that less calories is better ... (of course the people that always told me that .. are bigger then i am)

over a month ago when i made my mind up ... i have already gotten off of any kind of soft drink .. or sweat tea ... and now i am drinking water all the time (with an occasional crystal lite mix) ...

i guess the main thing i need to do .. is just focus on how i am eating .. and exercising .. and stop trying to focus on the scale so much .. except for maybe once every other month ...

welcome!

and I did Atkins, I lost so much weight and looked so good.. I went from 170 down to about 140... BUT when I started eating normally again... I ballooned up to 200!! eeeeeeeeeek, its been creeping higher ever since!

I read that Atkins makes you a fat magnet when you quit... it sure did!

lets vow to be healthier and take better care of ourselves... nice to meet you!

i beleive that about the atkins ... i went up almost 10 lbs when i changed .. but now it has started dropping back down ...

i broke down and got on the scale this morning ... and was suprized ... 259 ...

i am starting to beleive a bit more now in just eating heatlhy and exercising ... still have a few more changes to my habits that i want to correct ... but if it keeps going like this .. i may actually see below 200 one of these days ...

i still do not notice a big difference in how i feel yet .. other then being tired the next day after exercising (hah!)

an update i am happy about ...

i can now wear my size 42 jeans again ... and have moved down to a 2X shirt size ... also going to have to get another belt ... my one now is to big for me ...visually when i look in the mirror i don't see a difference ... but the clothing is getting loose ... so that is a good thing! ...

may take myself out this weekend and buy one or two nice shirts in the new size ...

Awesome for a shopping expedition - nto that I get any joy out of shopping...

but based on my own experience -it's easier to stay on th path you want to go down if you're wearing clothes t hat fit - i f your clothes are too big... then it's easy to fall into old habits and not keep going forward.. :D

hah! .. i dont enjoy shopping all that much either ... but with just the small change in size ... it has opened up more options for me in my area .. most all places stopped their shirt sizes at 2x ... and now i can wear a 2x shirt and it still fit loosely on me (likely could get away with a 1x, but i prefer to not have material that shows off all my rolls)

decided to use Fitday to help me monitor what i am doing a bit more... getting a headache trying to look up and figure out the cal's and such of everything i eat.

this past week i haven't lost any more weight so far ... i think my body is still adjusting to the changes from atkins diet .. to just eating healthy and exercising.

Are you eating enough!!

One thing that you have to make sure of is that you are getting enough calories everyday. If you are not eating enough, your body will go into starvation mode and you will either not lose or actually gain weight. The food we eat is fuel to the body and helps get the metabolism working. So, heck with your gym or doctor about speaking with a nutritionist about how much you should be eating each day. Good luck on your journey!

this summer i am going to start seeing a nutritionist just to make sure i am on the right track ... the cal intake for a day is one thing i am still working on ... right now i know i am eating less then i should be (even with a deficit) so i am trying to use the fitday site to help me keep track of it better ... and see where i need to work more .. etc etc...

just did my weekly weigh-in even though i said i was going to not do it because i felt like i was getting fatter instead of loosing weight ...

well i was wrong ... at 255 now

well down to 254 it would appear that it is slowing down even more now that i try to eat closer to my calorie needs ... not sure if i could keep trying to raise my calorie intake up more .. or keep it where its at for now ...

on a side note .. picked up a bike .. so on my off days from the gym .. will be doing a few miles on it around my property

nothing much to update on ... other then this

i am now below 250 ... weighed in at 248 this morning .. yay ...

still going to the gym 3 days a week .. and have also started riding a bike every afternoon i can ... only doing 2 to 5 miles .. but working on building up endurance so i can go for the 30 mile trips...

congrats on the sub 250- that's terrific...

and well done on the gyming -- and biking...

it seems like a good way to pace yourself to get up to the 30 mile trips.. you'll be there before you know it ...
