Define the Difference in weight loss and body fat

Bubbles...do you know your actually % body fat? I've seen your pictures and read/participated in your other threads and honestly am not sure how much you expect to lose. Realistically you will gain some muscle mass and likely lose a few pounds of body fat but your desired achievements seem to contradict one another.

You say you want slimmer legs...well you're probably not going to slim them down all that much. You have to be pretty large and pretty out of shape (lethargic, non-active) to have an appreciable amount of fat to lose on your thighs. You are neither. You're more than likely going to increase the size of your thighs by working out as you will develop the muscles and they will grow as you workout more.

There's gotta be some give take. I honestly don't know if you have much body fat to lose at this point. You are already a slender frame and its possible that by trying to lose more body fat, that you will put yourself into an unhealthy percentile.

I think you need to clearly define what you want from the healthier lifestyle you have started to practice.

Put some thought into it and post back.

You have managed to tell me exactly what I want to know. I don't know my body fat % but as you said I can't imagine it to be much (I don't have calipers so I dont know how else to work it out). My biggest struggle is understanding my body and having an overall understanding of fitness. I don't want to loose weight because I don't want to fall into a category of an unhealthy weight frame.

Every question I have asked on my posts is to increase my knowledge of how the body works. My question about my thighs is due to the fact that if you look at my body porportion my legs are much larger than the rest of my body (as like stated I have a slender frame) and to me looks odd but it's known that you are always your own worst critic.

My overall fitness goal is tone and to live a healthier lifestyle. I have a very minor medical condition which requires me to speed up my motabilism. Which is why I initially started working out but now I really enjoy what I'm doing and like stated before I want overall tone. I've taken some photo's of before starting this (out of couriosity) and some more today and I didn't realised but I think it's what I'm doing, and just to keep people assured I have not dropped any weight.

Because I lack in knowledge about exercise and workout I'm asking alot of questions to try to work everything out and understand what's good and bad for me and what I can and can not do healthwise (like wanting to reduce my body fat % could possibly put me into a unhealthy weight range.) Check out my other post in the photo gallery and tell me how you think I'm going. I'm up for all critics. It's better I get told things I don't know than go on doing what I'm doing which could be potentially bad for myself.

I've invested in a blender which is the best thing I have brought since my car (ok maybe not so drastic) but i've been making real fruit juices (blendind chunks of fruit with ice) is this good for me or could I be drinking too much sugar?

Fruit isn't protein, fruit isn't fat....it's carbohydrate and it's mostly fructose; a sugar. The thing about fruit is that the sugar is bound to fiber and this fiber inhibits the rate of digestion such that the sugar is absorbed at a nice rate that won't spike your blood-sugar. It's no coincidence: our bodies evolved based on a diet of fruit, vegetables and occassional meats.

IMPORTANT: if you have a "juicer" that spins & separates the pulp from the liquid, then you're drinking little more then sugar-flavored water and you're messing with nature's sugar-regulation device. What you're drinking is natural and has no preservatives, additives, etc....but it's not ideal.

What is ideal is a true blender...like the Vita-Mix or the machines they use at Jamba juice. You want to keep the whole fruit, pulp & all. Healthy yes, but don't kid yourself: calories are calories and if you're drinking-down thousands of calories of juice each day, it's unlikely you'll lose weight.

Too many people think that if you eat "healthy & whole" food you'll just lose weight and look great. Afraid not. You'll be eating healthier but it still comes down to calories in vs. calories out...never lose sight of that equation: it binds us, aligns the planets and keeps Paul Hogan's legend alive! :D

Ok so realisticly I don't want want to loose weight. I just want to reduce my body fat. I'd love to have that nice toned look. How would I do that? What deitary changes to I need to take on board to make this effective?

No....you DO want to lose weight, but the weight you want to lose is the weight that comes from FAT. Not weight from muscle, water of having really long hair. ;)

The look you are describing comes from a combination of 2 things:

1) Good muscle that comes from a body that does some weight-training and some cardio. You don't have to become a body-builder, hit the gym every day or train for a marathon.....just hit each muscle group 2-3x per week and take a few classes that get you moving (cardio). This will be more then enough to have a very nice muscular structure.

2) All this muscle & firmness won't be seen if you carry excessive fat on your body....this is where most people say they want to "lose weight". When you have a lower amount of body-fat on your body, you can more easily & readily see the muscle under the skin; this is the toned look you are referring to.

So this is all very simple: if you have too much fat on your body, you need to eat less and lose that fat so that your muscle can be revealead. If you don't have much muscle (from being sedative, watching tv all day and not getting any exercise) then you need to build, develop and work the muscles.

The average person generally needs to develop a solid workout routine combining both weight-training and cardio...this alone will help burn calories and drive the fat off your body. Add to that some healthy eating and an awareness of how much your eating to reach your BF% goal...and you're well on the way! :D

Do you have any suggestions for those moments of weakness. I have a bad habit for being a sweet tooth. I really have high standards and I really want to reach my goals I just really don't know how to obtain them but I don't want to give up.

You don't have to be perfect 100% of the time. Life is meant to be enjoyed and indulging periodically is well within reason. I too have a sweet tooth and what I find helps is Dark Chocolate with a high % of cacao (not cocoa). It takes a bit of getting used to, but once you're on it, milk chocolate taste like slimey sugar-laiden mud. Put a piece in your mouth and let it slowly melt...for reasons I can't understand or explain, it'll tend to give your body what it needs and the "drive" towards sweets will mellow. Also, it's very good for you!

Reaching your goal is a matter of determiation, perseverance, dedication and doing more of the right things then the wrong things over a period of time. Make it a life-style and make it a priority, it's something you won't regret. From your picture you look pretty young, attractive and not far from your goal....somewhere out there is an exotic bathing suit begging to wear you! :D

Be that bathing suit Bubbles....because the world needs more Hotties and Big Tom is a lonely man with special needs! :D

Chillen Jr. in the house! :)

Wow bike......i wish I could print that out and put that up on my wall somewhere. That was so modivational. I think I have a grasp of what your saying and what I need to do inorder to get the results I want. I have a question though. I've never been one to count calories because I have never truely understood how it all works and secondly I really don't know how many calories my diet should have.

How do I count calories to get the results I want and not fall into the category of a unhealthy weight range. I really don't want to become unhealthy, the purpose of working out is to stay healthy.

Bubbles....

Glad you found some value & inspiration from what I wrote. Again, the key is a three-fold approach:

Diet
Weight-training
Cardio

By combining these you'll get where you want to be. As for calories, you should do some reading and perhaps buy a few diet books so you can get a grasp on how it all works. When you buy food in the store, it should have a nutritional label that shows you the calories and breakdown of what's in it.

The thing is....you can eat 4,000 calories of wheat bread, turkey and fruit and gain weight.....and you can eat 1,000 calories of candy, potato chips & junk food and lose weight. What you eat is important, but how much you eat (in terms of calories) is the key. I'm not suggesting you eat junk food, I'm just warning that eating healthy food doesn't ensure weight-loss....knowing how many calories are going into your mouth is critical.

On a hunch, I'm guessing you should be eating about 1,400 calories per day in order to start losing weight at a nice rate. Generally, you want to eat about 20% less then your needs. Perhaps Chillen (member of this forum) could throw a few links out....he's got this question covered.

I agree, BikeSwimLaugh wrote some informative & useful things in his post to you! Although I recognize the difference between body fat & weight I still appreciated the reminder, as well as all the other great things in this site.
......i wish I could print that out and put that up on my wall somewhere.

Bubbles, I do copy things I find motivational or informative in here & save it in my own personal journal I have in my *Health* folder in My Documents so I can go & open it any time I want to. I also make daily sayings from things in here to put it above my desk & read when I need it... (& on my screensaver) i.e. "my monents of weakness," which I have a lot of! All you have to do is blacken what you want to copy then paste it in Word or whatever program you use.

I sure wish I had a body like yours to start out with! I've got to get rid of the 60 lbs of pure fat I gained after becoming extremely sedentary (bedridden). Just like I tell myself w/ my chronic pain...This, too, will pass. It's just gonna take a little while of staying on track w/ my intake/outake plan & to Keep on keeping on!
