Define the Difference in weight loss and body fat

I'm loving the info from this website. I have found some awesome info from other threads, but I'm struggling to understand 1 thing. Can someone define the difference in weight loss and body fat. When someone says I want to loose weight how is that different from someone saying they want to reduce their body fat %.

Also what is the different methods of these. How do you effective loose weight as opposed to offectively reducing body fat. I'm just struggling to understand the difference. (sorry i'm having a blonde moment)

I think when people say they want to lose weight they are referring to losing BF.

The main other way to lose weight is by losing muscle, but i dont think many people would want to do that!

So overall id say weight loss and reducing BF are almost the same.

However if your gaining muscle you may not lose as much weight but you can still be reducing your BF.

Yeah you would have people that are trying to loose weight to be healthier, but then you would also have the people who are gaining weight or muscle mass who wish to loose their body fat, but not loose any of their new weight

Yea, what was said above.

I think the differentiation was born out of people not fully understanding metrics beyond that of scale weight. In my 'travels' invariably the majority of people I speak with are solely focused on what the scale is telling them. They're solely focused on WEIGHT.

The problem is, weight is comprised of many variables; fat, muscle, glycogen, water, poop, bone, connective tissue, etc.

When you're putting an extreme emphasis on weight yet your goals are to optimize body composition... frustrating things tend to happen. The metrics you use must be in line with what you're trying to accomplish, if that makes any sense.

Weight is only one metric, and a very loose one at that. The long term trends tend to matter most, yet you've got people focusing on the acute fluctuations which is rather silly.

agreed. You would get a more accurate picture it you used something to measure your BF%, used body tape to measure your waist and other body parts, and the scale to measure your weight. Instead of the scale only.

Ok i think i understand. So if i was to say that I don't want to loose weight but I want too loose some body fat I wouldn't be considered as someone that has an eating disorder or considered anorexic because I'm still maintaining my overall weight but i just have a lower body fat content which will therefore show muscle alot clearer? Am I interpereting this right.

Pretty much.

When people criticize my look or eating habits and jokingly say that i have an eating disorder, i just laugh at them and say that what I have is eating ORDER. Sufficient calories from healthy sources including all the nutrients I need in a day. If i wasn't healthy, I wouldn't be able to out run you, or lift twice as heavy as you.

I think there are extremes to each side. Some morons think that if you don't grant your self that one trip to mcdonalds you're a fanatic. :sport:

Hey Bubbles,

I would associate weight loss with dieting and an all round decrease in body weight, including body fat and muscle.
Body weight % is more to do with strength training either bulking up of leaning out. It's about retaining the muscle you have while reducing your body fat. Your weight may rise or fall but the overall objective is to reduce BF.

I'm no expert but hope this helps!!

Thanks guys. My next question is. I think in order to get the results I want. (Nice tonned stomach and legs as stated in other threads) what would be my best way of getting that. I feel that I have started reaching my goals but I just want to make sure I'm going the right way about it. I still think however that I'm having a little too much sugar which could be holding me back.

Also another quick question: I've invested in a blender which is the best thing I have brought since my car (ok maybe not so drastic) but i've been making real fruit juices (blendind chunks of fruit with ice) is this good for me or could I be drinking too much sugar?

i guess it would depend on the fruits your are eating, but there wouldnt be much fat, and the body does break down your suger before it breaks down fat

I guess it changes, the fruits i use (may not be all together) banana, blueberries, pineapple, watermelon, orange, lemon, apple. I can't really see how they could be bad for you but I just figure fruits have lots of natural sugars so I thought there may be a chance that they are high in sugar.

To answer this question...if your body composition was exactly where you wanted it (mostly muscle with a bit of body fat) you would not care how much you weighed. So when you refer to loosing weight you just want to lose that extra body fat since it is just that extra weight. This usually would mean that you do not want to gain or loose muscle mass. This usually is not the case. You will likely increase muscle mass while losing body fat.

I would just like to throw in that "weight loss" can also occur from losing excess water weight, not just fat loss... like me going off that birth control :p Just adding that in.

Ok so realisticly I don't want want to loose weight. I just want to reduce my body fat. I'd love to have that nice toned look. How would I do that? What deitary changes to I need to take on board to make this effective?

There's actually not that much sugar in fruits anyway, and the fructose found in many of the fruits doesn't raise insulin levels.

Best way to lose fat? :p eat a healthy balanced diet which is slightly below your maintanance and make sure you get your physical activity hours in every or most day of the week.

Do you have any suggestions for those moments of weakness. I have a bad habit for being a sweet tooth. I really have high standards and I really want to reach my goals I just really don't know how to obtain them but I don't want to give up.

I'm not sure what your goals are, but maybe incorporate fruits with with a bit of yogurt on top. Wouldn't that quench your sweet tooth desires ;)

sorry my goals are overall body tone. I want slimmer thighs and a more defined stomach and I've read in many posts to get these sorts of things I need to reduce my overall body fat %. Weight loss is not something I'm really looking for its definately a more defined sexy body. I guess a prime example is a body like Jessica Alba or Kendra Wilkinson (Playboy) I know I can't have a body exactly the same but that's what I'm kind of working towards.

I wouldnt worry about natural fruit too much. I mean if you ate too much fruit it could make you fat. But as long as you are working out and you are not getting too many calories youll be fine. Just stay away from processed foods and stick to natural ones and you should do just fine. And even though fruit has fructose (sugar) many fruits also have fiber which reduces the effect of the sugar. And like previously stated fructose wont raise insulin levels as bad. The best time to eat sugar is after a workout though. After a workout an insulin rush does not increase fat storage.
