DCarr10760's Weight loss diary

This was my post from yesterday, which I pasted into a doc once I realized the site was buggy.

I didn't feel like working around the house yesterday. Davy has a touch of a cold and was feeling housebound and bored so I said to SWMBO, "Let's all go on a hike!" We have a nice nature preserve near the house that She and I used to use regularly before the boy came, but not since. She agreed, but without the enthusiasm I had anticipated.

So we did the hike, about 45 mins, not a lot of climbing but some. I was pushing the stroller (one of those three-wheeled jogging types with big knobby wheels...sorta the Hummer of baby strollers).

SWMBO was walking on just ahead (that's what I like about not being lead dog the view NEVER changes... ;)) She wasn't being real talkative (or friendly) but Davy was enjoying everything, the bumpy ride, the trees and the pond. He kept calling, "that is?" and I would tell him.

We had a great time. SWMBO, however was not having a great time. I guess she's pretty out of shape and was suffering her way through the walk. I tried to keep things light by saying stuff like, "Won't you feel great knowing you got a nice walk in so early in the day?" She just sort of grumbled...

Finally I suggested gently, "We should do this more often, we get out of the house and spend some time together, Davy really loves it and we could all use the exercise!

She turned around and looked at me with a look that communicated that she would rather be having breakfast in bed (alone) watching television. The look invited no further discussion. Sigh.

Seems "somebody" was up 'til 1:00 the night before with her allergies... and the idea of a bucolic ramble through nature on a bright, crisp Autumn morning seemed more like a forced march through a cold, damp minefield of allergens.

Well, Davy and I enjoyed ourselves anyway.

I can't wait to see what's in store today! ;)

Today is a rest day (yay). Yesterday I did my walk in the AM and lifted weights and cardio in the PM.

I have been cutting back on the grain foods, so little bread, rice, pasta, oats etc. I am still eating starchy vegetables like yams and potatoes. But not too much.

I feel better this way. We've been eating Pizza a lot, Davy loves it and we have a great New Haven Style pizzeria right on the corner. SWMBO had a dinner program and had tons of leftovers, so we'd been eating them. I felt yucky. So I decided to give it a try (to cut wheat based stuff out) to see if I felt better, and I think I do.

Dunno what that means. I read a health and fitness book by Paul Chek who says that people can be Protein types, meaning that they tolerate protien better than complex carbs. So maybe that's me.

I love bread, but it's one of those foods I consistently overeat. But when I eat a lot of it I feel acid-y.

So I decided to try to limit my intake of all of those foods for a month and see how I feel. The diet winds up being like the maintenance phases of the Atkins or South Beach diets, which I recall liking.

It's hard to make dietary changes and see how you feel later though, because you cannot control all of the variables. In a month I will be more fit, hopefully lighter in weight and if I feel better, it may not just be because I have been limiting grain foods.

Sorry about rambling on...

Have a great day all!

Morning David! Sounds like you and Davy had a great time on the hike. As for SWMBO, I'm sorry to hear she's suffering from allergens so badly. My baby sister, who will be hear the beginning of Novemeber is the same way, so I have to make sure to have my home stocked with Claritin D.

So you're thinking about changing your diet around, eh? Well good luck with it and I hope it helps you feel a bit better. I know I personally would not be able to cut out most of those things you listed... I'm such a carb whore. haha :hug2: Enjoy your day, handsome...

Diary Entry:

I wasn't going to weigh myself, I really wasn't, until tomorrow but I did and I am 238!!!!!!! I blinked, shook my head to make sure I was seeing right, and got off the scale, checked zero, yup zero. I made sure that it was on level terrain...yup. So I got back on and I was still 238!!!! Wahooo!

Congrats David!! That is great!:beerchug::beerchug:

Hi Sheryl, Paul and Stacy! Thanks for stopping by! I need to get better about reading through your diarys, Things've been nuts at home and at work. Nothing bad, just time consuming.

Yesterday was a good day on the diet. The changes in the diet leave me a bit hungrier than I was before, but so far not distractingly so. I did "cheat" yesterday. One of our vendors brought in stuffed bread from an Italian bakery in New Haven. I had about a 3/4-inch thick slice! Spinach! Mmmmmm!

Now the difference between the former fatass Dave and Not-so-fatass Dave of today is that I enjoyed the one piece, didn't have any more, continued on with my usual eating plan/schedule and went on.

The old me would have eaten half the loaf, figured, "well, that diet's blown" and binged for at least the rest of the day.

It is helpful to me to contrast my healthier behavior with what I did in the past. It helps to keep me mindful of the good behavior. I know with me (at least) half the battle is to keep focused on my goals during busy stressful days and not slide into my old, fat, knee-jerk responses.

I have a feeling that it never ends. I'm not trying to be a bummer (mannnn!) but I can't imagine lifelong habits are so easily changed. I think you (I) just need to constantly manage them. But I don't know.

Good Day, All!

Oh believe me, doll.... I know you're busy on that end, so don't frett about diaries. Regardless, I'm going to be dropping in here to wish you my best. :D

As for the spinach stuffed Italian bread (Oh god that sounds so freaking good..LOL), I see it this way... just eating that little bit made you realize you've changed things for the better. You've made this a lifestyle change as opposed to "Well hey... I can start over tomorrow" diet attitude. I'm really proud of you, David. I'm thinking you and Davy (SWMBO if she's up to it) should go for another hike this weekend.. ward off all the stress. Take care of yourself, hun....

Good 4 U!

It's a big step to be able to see you have made progress even if ya kinda go a lil wild.. ;)

You had control as you said, so be proud. :)

:D I hope you have a super duper Wed! :hug2:

Hey Davey!
Lifelong habit changing IS hard. Shit I thought I had it last spring, and in the summer I resorted to partying and beer guzzling. God, I love beer. SIGH! This is day 3 without one. Hee hee!!!
NEVER GIVE UP.
Have a great day!

Hey Val!

Beer is a tough one... I like wine, I like whiskey, I like vodka... But Beer! Beer I love. I love the smell, I love the colors, the way the bubbles dance from the bottom of the glass, I love it all!

My Favorite is Schosse Alt from Dusseldorf (I go there for trade fairs every other year), but Guinness is a close second.

I drank waaaaaaaaay, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many beers in my youth, so rather than giving it up I just don't have it at home any more. When I go out and have to drive I have two. If I don't have to drive and I'm not on a diet I have as many as it takes me to pass out! (Lol-just kidding, I can't afford that much!).

So it's been awhile for me too. My Sales Manager from Atlanta and our Reps from around the country are coming up for training (I'm the trainer) so I'll have lot's o suds next week!!

I drink more liquor now, I observe a strict "rule of two" no alcoholic drink should have more than two ingredients, one of which is ice.

I go to this one bar sometimes that serves a lot of young people (20's) and all these really tough guys are drinking fizzy purple drinks with little umbrellas! Hee hee... Cracks me up!

Thanks for stopping by!!

I LOVE BEER too much to love something that isn't human :(

My favs: Abita Turbodog (Louisiana); Young's Double Chocolate Stout (England), Harar's Hakim Stout (Ethiopia), St. Peter's Cream Stout (English?); and SCM Devout Stout (Santa Cruz Mountain Brewery).

I haven't been drinking this month (yet). It was killing my calorie planning!!!!!!!! Ah the month of the Libra: balance and love and harmony. I feel it! (so far)
Have a good one!

Wow, Val...I haven't had any of those beers! :(

I'll have to get busy! Did you have them in California or in their countries of origin?

Ooohh..yummy! I think we have similar tastes in beer. I do not like the standard crap like bud and miller. Give me a foreign beer or a microbrew anyday. I love Belgian fruity lambics--kriek (cherry), framboise (raspberry) and pecheresse (peach). I also love a good English stout. And Guinness, of course.

BevMo would have everything! Whole Foods has Santa Cruz Mountain Brewery's stuff if BevMo doesn't. Get to it!!!

Kimberly: Stout is my FAV (obviously). I have a craving for a chocolately one right now!!!

Last night was fun.

I drove to pick up my middle son (16) and together we drove to visit my oldest son (18) in college. The two of them are very close and miss each other so it was nice having us be all together again, even for a short time.

We went to Appleby's which is the closest place to campus. I took a lot of kidding because I ordered off of the "Weight Watchers" menu. I got the Sirloin steak, and it was funny. The steak was the size and shape of a jumbo egg. It couldn't have been 3 ounces, a good sized portobello mushroom (yummm) and some broccoli rounded it off. It wasn't so bad. The food wasn't the main event, spending some time with the guys was.

W- the middle boy is now nearly as tall as B-the oldest. So he was all happy about that (they're both over 6'-2"). I'm the shrimp at 5'-11"

I did have dessert- some apple thing with Ice Cream (wonderful).

When I left, I gave the college boy $100 and told him to spend it on riotous living (my Mother used to say that to me when she handed me a twenty). He looked happy, rested and healthy. He's lost some weight (a good thing) but he looks like he's enjoying himself.

I went to bad happy. I wish that I could've spent more time with them growing up, but life happens the way it happens. They seem alright.

My walk this AM was less about exercise and burning calories and more about ghosts of the past. I walked awhile with my old college friends and my Mom and all of my boys at different ages. The hour went by too fast. It all goes by too fast.

Thats the problem with focusing too hard on goals. You miss what's out the side windows.

Peace, all!

Happy Weekend All!

Not a whole lotta stuff to report. Eating has been okay, not great. Not at all bad but just not stellar. Several dinners out this week were the culprit. Next week will be challenging too as I have several business dinners and will have guests at work all week long.

But I'll manage! Exercise has been good too. I have decided to stop trying to run until I am below 225 (arbitrary number pulled out of my backside) because I keep injuring myself, ankles, foot, knees, lower back. Besides the elephant on the sofa fact that I am getting older, I think that my weight is still too high to subject my still out of shape frame to the jarring abuse of running.

I'll try again in another 10 - 15 lbs off and see how I do then. By that time I'll have had weeks of weight training to strengthen my core and will work on stretching to help with flexibility. That's my plan, anyway.

In the meantime, I will continue on with walking and the Lifecycle. SWMBO has doubled back on the decision to buy a elliptical trainer (not sure why :(). So maybe that won't happen, or at least not soon...sigh!

So everybody have a nice weekend!

David C

LOL I agree with Val--if you're handing out C-notes I'll take one or two..lol

Sounds like you had a great time with your sons. What a stud you are shooting out the y chromosomes..lmao. 3 boys! :rotflmao: Do you and SWMBO plan on having any more? If you do, I bet it will be girl..lol

Have a great weekend, my beer-swilling friend..:rotflmao:

It's funny, apparently My Father (I never knew him) always wanted a son. He was married twice, fathered 7 children, 6 girls and me! Plus in order to have me he had to take twins (I have a twin Sister).

So my X-chromosome deficiency is some kind of karmic balancing.

I'd like to have a girl, but I think we're done. Davy was a kind of a miracle.

Have a great weekend yourself! :)

David
