Cord's Quest

Wow Cord. I'm really impressed ... congrats on the 5 miles. I'm up to 3 now, part walking and part running. I think I might be able to do 5 if I really pushed, but I'm feeling a bit of a wuss about running right now.

And congrats on being nearly 1/2-way to your goal. That's a HUGE achievement and you deserve kudos!

Remember - half of it was walking.

It broke down like this:
1/4 mile alternating walk/jog 50 paces each
1/4 mile straight jog
4 miles alternating 1/8 mile walk, 1/8 mile jog
1/4 mile walk
1/4 mile walk/jog

I'm still impressed, I cant do over two miles walking/running. Therefore, you're the man.

Thanks, everyone.

To be honest - I was pretty surprised that I pulled that off. I guess all that swimming and lifting is paying off!

Today it is off to the local Salmon Festival - the salmon are running right now.

have fun man! i think i said in someone else's diary that you'll be surprised at how fast your body adapts and goes the distance. its all about getting your mind and body synced!

Not a really big day for exercise, but a really nice day with family.

In the morning I did a 30 minute fast walk up and down my hilly neighbourhood.

Then the family and I went to Horsefly (nearby rural community, about an hour's drive away) for their Salmon Festival.

Took a 45-minute guided walk/tour along the riverbank, and then later did a 30-minute hike up to a nice viewpoint and back.

It was all quite pleasant.

Now I am relaxing and killing things on the computer. Tomorrow I am hoping to try the running thing again.

Happy Labour Day, everyone.

As a union man, I like to take today to remember the hard work and sacrifices that the workers of the world made in order to secure the rights and benefits we enjoy today, and to stay on guard to protect those rights.

(okay, thus endeth the sermon)

I wanted to try running again today, but woke up at 0600 to the sound of pretty serious rain, and was a little bummed out.
However, it cleared up around noon so off I went.

I did another 5 miles today, split walking/jogging. Time 1:07, so pretty darn close to the first session.

It feels....good.

Sorry to be an ignorant foreigner but what is Labour Day actually about? Am I right in thinking it's a National Holiday? I see it mentioned on TV shows etc but I don't think it is recognised here.

Congrats on the exercise... you have a lot of willpower!! Waking up at 0600 to ANY weather, if I didn't have to, would bum me out lol. I could never get up that early if I didn't have somewhere I needed to be. Anyway, way to go. :)

Labor Day is a Federal holiday, yes. :)

It actually originated in Canada and was brought back to the States in the late 1800s by a labor organizer who saw Labour Day celebrations in Canada when he was visiting. It's meant to celebrate and honor workers and their families.

It's always the first Monday in September. In the US, it's also the unofficial end of summer - as it's around the time that most kids go back to school after summer vacation. A lot of people have barbecues and cookouts and spend their last long weekend at the beach or the lake or other vacation location ... as a symbolic move from summer into autumn.

It's also the beginning of the pro-football season in the US. This is the week that pre-season ends and American football kicks into full gear! :)

In many other countries it is celebrated on May 1st, and is called May Day. It is also called International Worker's Day by some.

The September date is a North American thing, as Kara says.

The mighty Cord! My hat is off to you sir. I would not have been able to walk that distance, let alone run any part of it. I may do some cycling, but it is easier on my joints and running/walking just gets to me.

Not feeling too mighty today.

I did absolutely nothing yesterday, except eat too much, and not the right foods. Hell, I had a stress binge (and I thought I didn't do those anymore) last night and ate a huge plate of chicken strips and oven fries.

I would like to call it a day off, but in truth I just slacked off. I did build a new gate for my fence, but something was off somewhere in my measurements and the damn thing is 1/2" too wide. Grrr. And today it is raining and I can't take the time to fix it right now.

My diet has gone all to hell lately. I'm hoping to straighten it out again starting today.

Oh, and my knee hurts this morning, and lately I have been having some serious dizzy spells. Yesterday I was in the grocery store shopping, and I suddenly couldn't walk in a straight line. Back to the doctor, I guess.

Today my daughter starts grade 1. That's pretty exciting.

cord my main man. i can't allow this anymore. We are human. we fall off, and we get back up. Even I run into hard times lol. But that's not my focus, and I don't let me being human get me down. I've an analogy for you. compare weight loss to driving home from a long distance lets say an 8 hour drive non-stop. that is your weight loss journey. You say you want to get home as fast as possible, which is 8 hours. But you have a kid, a bladder, an appetite and a car that runs on gas. you also have the unknown, like a flat tire. with the exception of the flat tire, you already know that you are going to have to make stops even though you really want to be home in those 8 hours. and you just push through it. it takes you 11 hours because the lady wants to sit down and eat to stretch her legs, and the kid needs to go more than you expected, or the milage of the car sucks, or traffic jams. In the end you still got home, and i'm sure you enjoyed dinner and the quailty time with your fam. singing in the car and play i spy lol. Nothing worth feeling bad about losing 3 hours over. So in terms of weight loss. something like a flat tire is an injury. always available to happen, but always massively inconvenient when it finally does, no matter how prepared you are. traffic jams too to an extent. But everything else happens naturally along the way. you will go out, you will slurge, and you will enjoy every morsel of it. but like going home in that car, you have a destination that you determined to reach no matter how many stops or delays you make. once you do what you need to do at that stop (like eat tenders and fries) you get back in that car and keep going. sometimes you may even stay the night at a hotel halfway through (like not working out for a couple days and eating not so great) but when you are rested you get up and keep driving. YOu don't beat yourself up in the car saying "man, i should have just drove through the night. i don't feel so good about myself now", so do do it on this road trip either. You know the path to get to your goal, so you don't ahve to worry about losing your way, all you need to do is remember to start moving again whenever you make a pit stop. its healthy for you to indulge every now and then. just enjoy it and get back at it. You have too many people following you to sound defeated. it doesn't suit you at all. too driven if you ask me. And like i always say, live life like you are your goal weight. if you were 200lbs would you feel so bad about the food? or would you just say"gotta work this off tomorrow lol"? if the latter is your answer then i say don't sweat it now, because its your life style. hope i mad sense here lol.

Cord! Take care of yourself. I hope that the dizzy spell is just an anomaly.

I don't know if this is helpful at all ... but it might be something to suggest to your doctor: About 4 years ago I suddenly started getting dizzy. I couldn't keep my balance, I couldn't walk in a straight line, was slurring my words, I couldn't type (and I normally type 120 wpm), I lost my sense of depth perception ... all of this sort of developed over the course of 2-3 weeks until it got so bad other people were noticing it. I was really scared - thought I might have had a stroke or something.

It turns out that it was allergies or a sinus infection or something of that nature affecting my inner ear. Apparently my inner ear had filled up with fluid and although I wasn't sneezing or congested or feeling any pain, my balance receptors were totally screwed up. I took antibiotics and a prescription strength nasal decongestant for a week and the symptoms completely went away and I've never had them since.

It was the FREAKIEST thing ever. Scared the crap out of me though!

I can sympathize about the stress eating - it's one of my biggest downfalls. Bleah.

Clarence - thanks for the kick in the ass. Sometimes I deserve one. :)
I have a tendency to be a "we have always been at war with EastAsia" kind of guy. When times are good, all I can see is the good. When times are bad, all I can see is the bad.

Jae +Tony - yeah, I'll make an appointment. Doc sent me for knee and chest X-rays last week, and a full blood profile, and he wants to do a full physical after the blood results get back, so I will add this to the mix when I talk to him next.

Kara - thanks. I wonder about the inner ear thing. I do like to swim a lot, and I get a lot of water in my ear as a result. I wonder if that has something to do with it. Allergy or infection is a possibility.

Okay.

First of all, let me explain that I am not at all bipolar or anything. I'm simply very self-critical.

My gym is open again, and I headed off to lift some stuff. Since it has been a while since I lifted anything, I started light on a bunch of these and ramped up.

Warmup - stretching and 5min treadmill
try Chinup - almost there, nose over the bar, and hung there for about 3 sec
try Pullup - up to eye level
Squats - 40lbs 1x5, 90lbs 1x5, 160lbs 5x5
Bench press - 40lbs 1x5, 90lbs 1x5, 120lbs 5x5
DB shoulder press 30lb DBs - 5x5
Inverted Rows - 1x7, 1x5, 1x4, 1x3, 1x4 - why are these getting harder?
Deadlift - 20lb body bar 1x5, 40lb bar 1x5, 110lbs 2x5, 160lbs 1x5 (weight was fine except that my right hand couldn't maintain the grip), 130lbs 2x5
Pullovers 40lbs 5x5
Wrist roll-ups 10lbs 1x5
Cooldown 13min on stationary bike

Let me just say that all of this felt awesome.

Clearly lifting stuff = happy Cord.

I will work very hard at being less whiny when I am having a suboptimal day. :)

Great work out with the weights!!!!

I don't think I could get back up from a squat with #160 yet in fact our trainer does not even want us to try any weight yet just body squats even back when I was lifting for football I had trouble getting stuck at the bottom.

Hey Cord when you do Squats do use the Squat rack or is it free weight?

Again great workout and I bet your glad your gym is open.

Later
Tony
