Confused.. NEED HELP!

Hi, Im just a little confused right now.. I've been doing upper body training for about a year now, i've seen very good results so far in my shoulders, arms , and especially in my chests. However the problem is that I was a little over weight when I started strenght building, so I began muscle building but only for my upper body. Now my upper body is shaped well and only reason I look fit, but the truth is that I got some extra fat in my lower body (the one I never did strenght building in) and I'm trying to get rid of the extra fat. I started playing alot of basketball, for 2 1/2 months, but I didn't see do any difference. Then I found out that you can't lose body fat and gain muscle at the same time? all I need is to lose some good 20 pounds of body fat, I don't know will me starting to do sit-ups lower my stomach? I'm really confused guys need some help. Thx in Advance.

I'm 5'10
Age 19
200 lbs

What is your workout like? I'm guessing its mostly upper body work. Its important to balance out your body, building the top and neglecting the bottom is just begging for injury/problems down the track.

If you havn't already start doing a full body workout, squats, deads, etc etc. Also how is your nutriton, to lose that 20 pounds you need to be in a calory defecit. If you still keep lifting heavy and with medium/low reps you can keep the muscle you have obtained already.

P.S don't worry about sit-ups to much lol, coumpound lifting excersises will be more tons more benefical.

I again agree with FG. However, the calorie deficit may not be crucial. If you're weight training properly, staying active, don't just haphazardly cut calories. Make sure you're cutting the right kinds, like processed sugar (bread, cereal, etc), saturated fats and oils.

As for the workout, definitely go with FG's advice. Compound lifts will burn up the fat and generate the muscle you're looking for. A full-body workout may not be necessary, you could split your workouts into Upper/Lower etc.

Gaining muscle and losing body fat is absolutely possible. When you have a high muscle to fat ratio, your metabolism will be increased and your body will burn calories simply maintaining and regenerating that muscles that you're working and developing.

Thanks alot guys, that helped me alot you dont know, thx. As for the lower body workout, I'll start taking that into consideration, but one thing I've noticed is that my calf musle and thy have gained some muscle (My legs are in good shape I dnt knw..) , I don't know if its the pushups or playing basketball or is just my genes? So if its either... continue on doing it?? And is there a fast way to loose fat from the stomach.. i'm thinking situps dnt knw u guys the experts :) Anyways Thanks alot!

Unfortuantely there isn't a fast way to lose fat from the stomach, your just going to have the lower you body fat %. Doing sit-ups will develop your abdominal muscles IF you have good form, however if there is a layer of fat on top of that muscle your abs won't show and you will look very much the same. To burn fat i suggest you do a mix of cardio and a full body body routine (compound lifts) or if you'd like a split routine that adler suggested.
Oh and keep working on your legs, haiving musclular legs helps a lot with burning fat because its a huge bunch of muscles which burn a huge amount of calories.
