Chinning/Pullup Bars

This may seem like a really stupid question, but are chinning bars or pull up bars safe? I mean, if I put a metal bar in a door frame and pull my body weight on it, am I going to end up on my ass surrounded by large wooded splinters?

I saw one the other day while looking for some cheap home gym equipment and was thinking of getting one, but don't want to damage my door frames. Also, I'm still at the fat rather than fit stage, so is it too soon to be tackling something like this? I've seen people a lot fitter than me struggle with chin ups.

I'd probably start with pushups before attempting pullups...

That could take while, I only managed about 3 proper push ups this morning. I had to do the rest on my knees.

I suppose I'm just so keen to get fit I'm getting ahead of myself. Need to learn to walk before I run.

pullups are something that I don't believe will ever be easy for females to do - we tend to just not have as much upper body strength as men folk do.. Pushups shoudl give you a running start...

Check the stickied threads in this forum (exercise) there are some good suggested workouts in there.. that will give you a runnig start...

pull-ups

If you can only do 3 push-ups I wouldn't worry about a pull-up bar. It'll be ages before you'll be able to pull-up your bodyweight. If you overweight you may never be able to pull-up you bodyweight. As a female it took me about 2 years of hard lifting to be able to do pulls/chins and I can still manage only sets of 8 or so.

I recently got one, and I love it. I can only do one pull up, followed by one chin up, but I couldn't do any at first, so I'm making progress! Its also really good for abs. You can hold an L-shape, or do tuck ups (knees to chest) or leg ups (toes to bar). I do pushups too, but to start learning the pull up I would start from a hang and pull myself as far as I could, which wasn't very far. then I would jump so my chin was above the bar and hold it there as long as I could, essentially I was doing the beginning and the end of the pullup.
