My gym is having a contest. "Lighten the load" is the theme.

We are competing for the next 12 weeks to see who can lose the most weight- Right now the contest is open to anyone.
In 8 weeks they will cut all except for the 9 people who have lost the most.
These 9 will go on competing for another 4 weeks.

Today was day one-- I was weighed on the "special scale" I have an official starting weight of 167.9
Also-- I have a body fat percentage of 36.5%
The goal they have set for me is 144 lbs. which would according to them would be 26% body fat.

I have to work out in the gym at least 4 days a week and wear my
"Lighten the Load Contest T shirt" -- I guess we are to be advertising the gym.

Anyway-- I am looking forward the weekly weigh ins and also on March 7
to having the body fat percentage measured again.

I am going to keep this diary separate from my other diary- for the duration of the contest. Please follow my progress and cheer me on!!!!!!!!:hurray:

I will continue my 6 water aerobics classes and 1 pilates class and I will add step aerobics and sessions with a personal trainer.

Today I went to the beginning step aerobics class-
I did step 18 years ago after my son was born-- Today I remembered I was a clutz.... I get mixed up on the big combinations... but I finished the class!! My tshirt and sports bra were completely soaked through. With water aerobics you do not feel any sweat... I had forgotten how dry land aerobics differ!! Tommorrow is one of those rare holidays I have off. I plan on going in and taking a later water aerobics class ( sleeping in -- maybe until 8!!!!) then taking in some other classes I can never fit in!
I also cooked today -- made enough lamb stew for 4 meals. I need to go to the store and get some more lettuce and vegies for my lunches. I am going to try to eat only soups for dinner and have the larger meal by lunch.

Well done doing step, you are not the only one who gets their feet mixed up :) if you can try doing a spin class :)

Ahhh Sleep! A rare holiday !Slept in to 7:30!! So nice- I made the 9:30 water aerobic class I was concerned that my calves would be sore from step-- But this am I felt fine.
Sat in the steam room for 15 minutes then a cold shower.
Afterwards did about 40 minutes on the treadmill-- just easy walking-- I bought new shoes yesterday and needed to break them in-- Also the stupid treadmill was touchy-- kept shutting down. I had to start over 3 times. I went to the 12:30 water aerobics class-- (In hindsight I should have EATEN. But I wanted to get some work done at home and the next class was 3:45.) the 12:30
was intense-- probably due to the fact I was running on empty.
I finally got a bowl of Pea soup at 1:35 but the damage has been done-- Screaming headache! Then a bigger headache... My son called from college 200 miles away to tell me someone had sent him a text telling him that our 2 goats were out... I came right home --some kind neighbor had caught them and snapped them to the cables we had in the yard when we had dog. A nice temporary fix but-- Not good for the long term.. I spent the rest of my afternoon trying to convince one of my neighbors they needed to give the goats a home... No Luck-- I finally called a guy I know to come get them.. ( their fate is uncertain --they may end up as a feast for one of the local foreign students at the University-- at this point I am so aggravated with their sudden interest in life on the Outside I could almost eat one myself)
He won't be able to pick them up for a couple of days..I will just hope they decide tomorrow that getting out is too much trouble.
My plan for tomorrow is to try a cycle class---I am excited that next sunday my gym is planning a "sample" day All day long they are running mini introductory versions of most of the their classes. I hope they have kick boxing as a choice!

another nice efort, well done :) but you realy do need to try to avoid working out on an empty stomach and don't forget to eat within 20 minutes of finishing.

I am sorry I have not posted since Monday--
On Tuesday for something totally different I went to a 5:45 am cycling class--I need to get some padded shorts and a seat cover-- I was very sore.
I did like the class and it is something to do on Tuesday am.
Yesterday I made both my early am and the 5:30 pm water aerobics class.
Today I met with a personal trainer-- Among the items he recommended the treadmill set at the highest incline (15) at about a speed of 2.0 for 30 minutes as my warm up-- ( This was very tough---- I tried it later after my session and I could do about 5 minutes at time at the highest incline then I would drop it to 10 and recover for 5 minutes then back to the highest---- this will be tough
Also and doing some squats designed to strengthen by knees, some upper body twists while in a semi reclined position with my hands across my chest,
some weight lifts, and an rowing type exercise done on the machine.
And then for the end another 3o minutes on the cardio equipment of my choice--( that is why today I tried to do the warm up exercise just to see if I could)
He also got me back on the eliptical again-- I had some issues with this before-- I just need to find my stride-- I will keep trying but I just cannot seem to get the hang of that thing--- I will be meeting with the Personal Trainer on Tuesday afternoons and working out 2 other days a week on my own-- Thursday and Saturday.
Food wise -- I have been trying to eat more at lunch then dinner. I also have
been waiting to eat until I feel actual hunger-just beginning-- which for me luckily seems to be at times when I can eat-- like 4:40 to 5:00 am
9:30 and 12:30pm and 6:30pm I will be adding snacks in before and after my work outs as recommend by Truslyver--:seeya:
One problem I have is packing enough food to last the day-- I have had
to go through the drive up at Taco Time a few times to get plain crisp taco
as I was getting hungry and I have about a 20-25 minute drive home depending on traffic. I am sad I can no longer find in the supermarket the little tangerines-- these were so good! I have made a snack for tomorrow for before and after the work outs-- a low carb wrap thing - I had one today with ham and asparagas in it. Not bad--- But I wish I knew how to make the
fresh wraps you get a THAI places the once that have what appears to be a rice wrapper of some sort-- then stuffed with lettuce and sprouts and the then glass noodles grated carrrots and tofu? I really just need to know where
to buy the wrapper thing and do they soak the wrapper? I have been craving those things-- today I bought 2 and some Tom Yum soup for lunch-
I have enough leftover for tomorrow-- but I would sure like to know how to make these at home.... If anyone knows please advise!!

Second weigh in!

Today was the second weigh in--
167.2 -- down .7 lbs that stinks... I added an extra class this week and started with the personal trainer and ..... I only lose a little over 1/2 a pound. I will round my ticker down to 167 to make me feel better.
I did my workout on my own with out the trainer. I may take tommorrow off-- there is a step areobics class I can go to late tomorrow afternoon.. -- Maybe I am back to adding muscle again?

This week still is not good.... I have had a migraine and have just felt "off"
I hope Saturday shows a loss of some type. I have had a back ache as well and have been stressed from work. My session with the trainer of course did not go well-- we worked on form as I just did not have much energy.

Despite it begin an off week I was down 7/10 of lb again...At least I am consistant.
Still have a headache. Today was the sampler day- I tried out 4 classes.
Lift 2 be fit -- using the large gym ball and weights, drumming ( this was awesome) Nia dance, and a yoga/pilates blended class. I wish I had felt a little better. I was feeling pretty tired in each class-- which were short for the "sample" about 30 minutes each.

Good luck with your contest! I wish my gym did fun stuff like that.

What do you do for a living? Your days seem to start awfully early, or are you just a morning person?

On Tuesday for something totally different I went to a 5:45 am cycling class--I need to get some padded shorts and a seat cover-- I was very sore.

I did one of these classes once. It was painful from the seat, but incredibly effective. I swear everyone was sweating buckets. Unfortunately, the class was in the middle of the afternoon and no longer fits my schedule.

Food wise -- I have been trying to eat more at lunch then dinner.

Just curious, is there a reason you're doing this?

I wish I knew how to make the
fresh wraps you get a THAI places the once that have what appears to be a rice wrapper of some sort-- then stuffed with lettuce and sprouts and the then glass noodles grated carrrots and tofu? I really just need to know where
to buy the wrapper thing and do they soak the wrapper? I have been craving those things-- today I bought 2 and some Tom Yum soup for lunch-
I have enough leftover for tomorrow-- but I would sure like to know how to make these at home.... If anyone knows please advise!!

Here's a recipe for if these are what you're looking for. I'm sure you could substitute tofu if you wanted. You can find rice wrappers in any asian market or sometimes in the international aisle of your supermarket. I believe you soak them like you would nori when making sushi.

Thank you for stopping by Penny B.-
My days do start early-- I am an Administrative Assistant in a brokerage firm-
I have to be at work when the market opens which here on the west coast is 6:30 am-- My gym is very close to my work so I can get from one to the other in five minutes... Regarding why I am trying to eat a bigger lunch is really I am trying to just eat smaller dinners... I grew up on farm-- ( the other reason I am an early riser!) We ate big breakfast and big dinners... There were 6 of us and I used to help my mom do the cooking-- Most of my dinner entrees would feed 6 people pretty easy! With just me... I can easily overeat on dinner. My job is stressful and it is has been an issue with me to be a stress eater. Thank you for the tips on the fresh wraps... I just need to locate an Asian market for the rice wrappers- I will probably grow my own sprouts --- the ones in the store always taste a little sour.
---Today I did the am and pm water aerobics classes. Tomorrow I am again going to try cycling and in the pm work through the workout set up for me by
my trainer.. Wednedsay I will the take the am water class then I have scheduled a massage!!! I had to miss the one I had scheduled in December due to bad weather..... I have not had the time to re-book!! Not sure if I will hit the gym after that or just relax!

I have missed posting---This saturday I only lost one tenth of a lb.
I have been pretty fatigued lately. I have decided to focus more on how my clothes are fitting-- I have some size 10' S I am able to get into...I may be adding more muscle. I am also trying new things. This evening I managed 7 minutes on the Elipitical-- I am trying to work up to 15--
I will try the Eliptical first before doing 30 minutes on the incline treadmill. That was my problem tonight I was already tired. Need to start fresh.

The weigh in was again very disappointing....3/10 of pound. I want to be losing at the rate I was losing in November! At this rate it will take me over 3 years to lose all the weight I want to!. I want to break the 160 mark soon. I am doing my workout as directed by the trainer and all the cardio he has directed in addition to the 6 water aerobics classes. When we do the body composition test again in march I hope at least to show a dramatic change in that.

Perhaps you've gained some muscle which would explain the slow weight loss rate. I know they say it's difficult considering you're in calorie deficit, but I've been jogging recently and my calves have grown more than half an inch. I had taken a big break from steady exercise and am pretty sure I a good bit of muscle mass and am having to make it up, which means I only lose a pound a week, but I can tell things are fitting better. Hopefully our weight loss will pick up :)

Very Frustrating ! Up 1 and 7/10 of pound almost back to where I started a month ago! In 2 weeks we have the body mass testing again. Maybe this will be my saving grace.

Wahhoooo! Back on track!! A whopping 3 pound loss over last week!
I believe I was really retaining some serious water weight. I missed my thursday training session due to transportation issues... my car would not start and I had to have it towed to the shop. I did end up hiking for 30 minutes over to where I could get a ride home -- so at least I had a little exercise that night.
When I was so depressed last week over my weight gain my trainer asked if I was consuming 80% of my calories AROUND my work out. I said, "No-- should I?"
he said. "Yes... 40% in the hour before and 40% in the hour following"
Anyone out there use this dietary philosophy? SInce my weightlifting workouts begin at about 4;30pm and I get up most days at 5 am or earlier-- I can only
eat 20% of my calories for breakfast and lunch or 10% at each meal? I am confused on what to eat when on my water aerobics days.... as I work out twice... and OOHHHH! He wants me to do 30 minutes on the treadmill after water aerobics--- I cannot do this in the am as I have to get to work-- I may
be able to roll my but out of bed 30 minutes earlier to do it before in the am.

I also went clothes shopping.... I tried on a skirt at Talbots.... It was very cute and I could squeeze into the 10-- but the 12 was a better fit-- BUT--
My legs still look like they belong to a Rugby player- I decided to wait awhile longer before buying NICE new clothes-- I did get 2 yoga tops at Old Navy-
and a pair of khakis on sale CHEAP --6 bucks from the men's department that I can hem up or even crop off for shorts.

Today was the final weigh in for the first Phase of the contest--
I lost only.5 a pound this week. This gives me a loss of 4.0 pounds for the last 8 weeks.... The body mass testing now gives me a body fat % of 35.5 down 1 % from 36.5. I have lost inches... ( although the official data is in CM) from my shoulders, butt and waist calves and thighs)
They will know tuesday who goes on and who is cut-- Most likely I will be cut.
I decided that even if I am cut from the contest. I will have the test run again in 8 weeks.
