Cate's Diary

Glad to hear you´re feeling better, all the best for your saltreduction! I think I remember reading that it takes three weeks for your tastebuds to adjust but I´m not very big on salty stuff (unless it´s really hot outside for weeks) so I can´t really tell...

I'm glad to hear you can get back to regular exercise. You've accomplished so much already and the low salt will be your next big accomplishment. Like the other changes the difficulty is in the adjustment. Things will taste bland at first and you will crave it. Just push through that and the flavors will come back and the cravings subside. Once your palate adjusts you'll taste the foods rather than the salt and I think you will be pleasantly surprised that you like it that way better.

I look forward to seeing your progress and you know we will all be pulling for you. Go Cate!

Good to hear the doc is on top of this.

It would be nice if these sorts of issues didn't happen, but at least they sometimes can help us regain some focus. Good luck on the new diet, and enjoy your exercise. It really is supposed to be fun, even though sometimes it's hard to see how. :)

I just re-read my last post & must admit I am a little scared. I hardly got any sleep on Friday night as I pictured my heart going ka boom, ka boom jump & the words "ticking time bomb" which I saw on a Google search of Aneurysim Ascending Aorta had my mind working on overtime. It was also a full moon.
One of the women I sat next to yesterday obviously had a horror story about someone else with a similar thing. The look on her face when I told her was priceless(& very scary). My news was put into perspective though by the news that the 3rd woman we were organising the 8-ball tournament with has just been diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast Cancer & is about to start Chemo & radiation. She's about 10 years younger than me.
It was a good day & the tournament went smoothly. One of our young friends made the Tasmanian State team & we are thrilled for him. It looks like my husband will be the team captain of the Masters team again & it seems like they want me to be team manager again.

La Maria, Q & V- I'm a shocker with salt. I think it's one of those things that the more you have the more you crave. I'll just go cold turkey! I do also seem to have the sort of brain that can switch something on or off in an instant, so there goes the salt. Click! I appreciate your support very much. I know you're right about the food tasting better Q without salt. I can hardly have been tasting the actual food really. I had half an avocado and a boiled egg on my toast this morning, minus salt & it was delicious. I will probably be a lot less thirsty too! :blush5: Thanks folks for your encouragement. I'm so glad I made this appointment. I think I was a ticking time bomb & I want to live a heck of a lot longer- 25 years more would be good!
I'm in my work gear today & we are going out to the golf club for a working bee. Another thing I have to be careful of is no heavy lifting. Once again I usually don't think twice about really heavy lifting, but from now on I will!
Cheers, xoxo Cate

Health, other peoples health, health again, than nothing for a while, than all the other stuff... Good luck!

I'm not at all sure what your post means LaMaria. I think I must be boring you.....Did you just think out loud? ;)

OK. It's Monday. It's cold & foggy & I don't have the car. I have the day to myself & I'm in my exercise gear........

Rode my bike yesterday & kept an eye on my heart rate, which was good. I'll monitor it from now on. I am going out to play golf tomorrow & am really looking forward to the playing part. I really want to play golf, but it is a shame about some of the women. I'll try hard to chill out & not take offence(or, alternatively, tell them what I think if anyone is rude.) Unfortunately, there is a meeting afterwards.
My Mum has been really good lately & is usually in the lounge room, rather than her room, so I am able to talk to other people when I visit. She does not speak at all anymore.
I felt a little short of breath again today & it's hard not to worry, now that I know there is something wrong with my heart. I'll have to get fitter & a bit slimmer now. What an incentive!
I'm going out to 8-ball tonight as I need to tell our OS about it, before he hears from someone else.
Lots of love to all xo Cate

I hope you and your doctor can get you heart problem fixed / under control Cate. I can only imagine how stressful that must be. :(

My best wishes go to you Cate. Good luck and take care.

Thank you Athala. I will be careful I promise. I plan on living a heck of a lot longer & will do whatever I can to be as healthy as possible.
I played golf today & won my division by 3 points. I played really well 1st nine(20pts) & my game deteriorated 2nd nine(13) as I got tired & stiff. I had not played for 3 weeks, so am really happy with my day. The women were pleasant & I enjoyed my day. I had decided that if anyone was rude I was going to tell them what I thought, & am glad it was not necessary. Life is way too short to put up with rudeness.
My husband spent the day at home(no choice really as we only have the one car now) & we have baked venison & lots of vegetables for dinner. I am WAY under my calories for the day.
All in all A very good day!
Love to all, xoxo Cate

Excuse me for being unclear, I didn´t mean to be rude. I really wanted to say that that´s (to my mind) the order one´s priorities should have and that I felt it pretty much matches yours. I´m sorry if it sounded otherwise (and reading back I can see that it did), if your diary bored me I should (and would) just stop reading.

Glad you enjoyed your day! LaMaria

La Maria, I thought that was what you meant, but couldn't resist being silly! Sorry about that. I have a whacky sense of humour!
Saw this the other day & loved it & shared it on Facebook xo

Going to have a reasonably lazy day today- it's chilly & overcast & I'm fairly tired after golf yesterday. It was such a nice day. Cheers, xoxo Cate

Mmmmm, Bambi for dinner. Yummy.

Glad you enjoyed your golf. The good news for my golf game: prices here have gotten dirt cheap! The bad news: playing gold in 105 degree weather can be challenging.

Hi La Maria- Isn't it good? Being healthy is the most important thing to me, without being obsessive about being thin. Slim & fit would be good. :D

Hi Vee- Bambi again tonight. It is delicious!! Deer are introduced pests here & the meat is so lean. I love the flavour of the meat. It's not as strong as beef or lamb & this venison is incredibly tender.
Golf in 105 degree weather would be tough. I play with an umbrella in Summer, more often than in Winter. To be a member of our club costs only $400 Aus a year. How amazing is that? Green fees are only $15, which is crazy! For an extra $20 pa I keep my clubs & buggy in a locked buggy room. It's great value. My aim is to try to get new members, which is really tough. It's hard to get people to commit to anything! I think green fees should be a little higher to encourage people to join, but I think the committee are too scared to do that, in case we put people off altogether, as we do get a fair bit in green fees over Summer especially.

I can feel my golf game starting to come together a bit. I really need to play each week. It's a great game!
I have lost a little bit of weight & am getting used to not adding salt to my food. I think it will help me lose weight as non-salty food is not as appealing to me.

We have the grandkids tonight which will be nice. Our OS & his GF are going to Melbourne for a couple of nights for her birthday. I'll return the kids to their Mum tomorrow afternoon & then my LH & I have to do the bar for an "outside" function at the club. We were really hoping it would be cancelled. We don't enjoy these ones & they make very little money for the club, so are not worth our effort. I think that if we're not available to do them the woman who organises them will have them elsewhere, which would be ok. I am not looking forward to it one little bit. Life is too short to be doing things we don't want or need to do.
Cheers, xo Cate

Morning Cate. We call it venison too.. makes it less like eating Bambi's mum doesn't it? We live quite near to the Forest of Dean, an old broad leaf forest once used by Henry 8th to hunt. Every autumn (fall) the deer are culled and I'm first in the queue at the shop.
Today we are heading up into the hills for the day with our dog (daft black lab) and a picnic. It's great to be retired!

Hi D. Venison is scrumptious when it's cooked right. We just got back from doing the bar (volunteer ie no pay) & the main course was Venison, which 2 people said was stringy. :( The cooking was nothing to do with us, or our venue, but is a shame nonetheless. Good food should be cooked properly. I am married to such a good cook & am thoroughly spoiled. Last night our 6 year old grandson said that he would eat this meat (Venison) every day of the week if he could! Our grand-kids love our food. Thanks for visiting my diary D (I confess to a senior moment & can't remember your real name & can't bear to call you dumpy) xo Cate.

I hunt my own deer and it is great. I share your grandson's sentiment. I eat little of it as I generally get 1 deer to last the year, but it is my exception to veganism. I really need to get some out of the deep freeze and have a bit. Enjoy your golf and not so wintery winter weather.

Hi Q, I think Venison has become my favourite meat, especially how my husband cooks it. Eating feral pests is good all round-good for us & good for the environment.

I'm having a lazy morning so far & enjoying it. I try to make Sunday feel different to other days & that is one of the ways. Good excuse anyway!
Although I know I am about 6kg more than the charts say I should be I felt really slim last night. I wore closely fitting clothes(all black), with a red silk scarf & felt slim. When I feel slim, I eat that way too. I had delayed my lunch until 3.30pm on purpose as we had to be there by 5pm. They forgot to feed us, so I used it as an opportunity to have a low calorie day & did not over-compensate when we got home. I just had some cheese & crackers. Consequently I had a day under my calories, without any difficulty. I am not one for skipping meals usually & I don't think it's a good idea.
Love to all xo Cate

:) Feeling slim is lovely! Deer aren´t pests where I come from but muskrats are. To motivate people to eat them (as they have to be caught anyway but most folks don´t like the sound of "rat" on their plate) they´re called "waterrabbit" on the menu...

Had a nice, quiet day yesterday, reading & just taking it easy. A friend of my husband's came up with his chainsaw after he finished work & in one hour cut down about 100 smallish Wattle trees that had grown up & removed our view of the mountains totally. We can now get glimpses of the mountains through the remaining mostly gum trees, but he will come back another day to cut down more wattles. They are very dense trees & have felt like an encroaching army. We have lots of wood cutting to do before he can come back & do more. He's going to borrow a tractor & drag out some dead, dry ones. We have 50 acres of land & most of it is bush. The trees between our home & the mountain view are just a small part of it. Having them removed would also lessen the risk in bushfire season as they are on a hill leading up to our house.

It's raining now & windy so it looks like we won't be wood-cutting today :(
Bye for now xo Cate
