Cate's Diary

Yes, please, pictures of Archie both shaved and dressed! I really hope the snuffles go away once he's groomed.

Awww hecwill feel so much better after a cut and shave. Dogs need a good brush regularly. Your birthday sounded nice Cate

Hi, Liza, LaMa, Sadie & Em.
My birthday was lovely, although next year I will make sure I get lots of hugs. I actually really felt very much loved.
We had to drop Archie off yesterday morning at 8 am to have his haircut & it ended up being an all-day thing, due to emergencies coming in. I got a bit angry in the end as I don't think I would have taken him there if I had known that was a possibility. As it turns out he wasn't in the slightest bit stressed & they did a really good job. When I dropped him off in the morning I had my fragrance-free doggy shampoo, but the groomer said they used something similar & that it wasn't necessary. I should have trusted my judgement because when I picked him up he smelt like fly spray. It was dark & cold when we got him home & I didn't have the heart to bath him again to get rid of the smell. His coat is just practical, rather than smart as their range was fairly limited. I'll get a better-looking one sometime soon.
He has settled in so well it is really quite amazing. I sent Emma, his last owner, a photo of him after his haircut & she couldn't get over how tiny he looked. She is so glad that he has settled in so well. She said that she thinks he would have loved to just sit on a lap most of the time but their other dog just wouldn't let him.
He was on my lap all evening, even though he smelt like fly spray. Overnight we had a wild storm & we didn't hear a peep out of him. Early this morning (5.30'ish) we heard a weird noise for a while & then lots of whimpering & barking & I investigated. He had spilled his water & his bed was wet & then I worked out what the weird noise must have been. I had left his favourite toy on top of his crate & I think he must have been trying to get it. :svengo: I won't make that mistake again. We decided to stay up after that, but I bathed him first thing before any of us had breakfast & he is now sound asleep again on the big cushion on the floor next to my chair.
I feel quite besotted & I think it may be mutual :beating:

Yeah he looks really good! That story about his favorite toy out of his reach and him ending up spilling his water all over his bed--so sad!
I'm so glad you two have hit it right off--sounds like a great match! I'm glad he has a house where he can get all the affection he needs :)

Hi, Sadie, LaMa & Liza. He's really happy & definitely won't be short on affection. Leaving his toy on top of the dog crate was my first doggy Mum failure. I won't do that again :blush5:
I will have to get a doggy door organised soon as it's starting to get really cold leaving a door ajar. I'm trying to find out if the doggy doors Rob suggested are available here. They look excellent.
I took him for a walk today, but not a huge one as I have had a touch of Asthma from the stinky stuff on him last night. I'm ok now.

Good to hear he's getting settled in so quickly :beating: Such a quick process from first hearing about him to being a dog mom again!

He looks like he is going to a ball of fun and keep you in hysterics laughing , cheeky little look about him . I love him just from the pics

Glad your asthma's improved from the stinky shampoo.
So he seems well house-trained then? Is he also good with requests/commands? And have you seen how he is with other dogs yet?
I love seeing the really well-trained dogs out and about. There are the completely untrained ones with people yelling and yelling at their dogs with no comprehension on the dogs part...then there are the ones when the person just says quietly--'come' and they come. I love those ones on the off leash trails. Growing up we had a dog who was lovely around our place, but we never trained him properly and we couldn't ever have him off-leash in public and even on-leash he was a pain when we encountered other dogs. If i ever got a dog now i would totally have him well trained.

Thanks, Em, Han, Petal & Liza. He seems to be a well-behaved dog & is good on the lead & so far seems to be good with other dogs. We haven't taken him to the park yet, so that will be fun. We had a bit of a rough night with him last night. He did not want to settle in his crate & then carried on a treat halfway through the night. I got up & put him outside while I tidied up his crate, took the water out & dried the floor etc. A friend, S, rang me last night about doggy doors & what they have & where they got it & she said that they don't leave water or food in the crate overnight & neither does their son & daughter with their dogs, so tonight that's what I'll do.
I relocated one of those non-slip mats from another part of the house & it fits perfectly in his crate, so with the bed in there & a mat & no water or food to be spilled hopefully, tonight will be better. I think he just wants to be on my lap all the time. I have just moved him so I can type properly. Evenings are for laps. My morning ritual is having breakfast & then sitting in my chair, drinking coffee while I do the forum on my laptop. I want to keep doing that as it's too hard on my phone. There is a perfectly good lap just over there, Archie ;)
I got a message from a friend last night letting me know that her husband has gone into hospital with his cancer & she has been told he won't be coming out. She is fighting for permission to visit as he's in a NW Tas hospital & the NW has been in lockdown since their outbreak. So sad. She is very close to the other friend, S, who rang last night. S's husband & G both had prostate cancer & we both feel very lucky that they have recovered well & keep getting the all-clear.

:) Sounds like Archie is quite the adventure. I'm enjoying reading about it.
It must be so tough for your friend not to be able to visit her husband

I hope the nights go better without water/food in the crate.

I hope your friend wins the right to visit her husband. Those stories are the worst of people getting cut off from each other like that in such times when they most need each other :(

Very sad about your friend . Sadly it’s the same everywhere . I think it’s very cruel
And wrong .
Yes my first thought was Archie does not need food or water overnight . Should make his crate less disruptive at night

I just heard back from my friend to say she has permission to visit her husband & do does his brothers. Thank goodness for that!
Hopefully tonight will be a better night's sleep & his crate looks really cozy now. I'm new to crating & had no idea. I have also put a rug over it.
I took him for a walk this morning & then left him up at the house while G & I got a load of wood right down in my the bush. We could hear him barking!
We came back & had lunch & then took him with us for another load. He happily stayed in the ute, without a peep. We delivered it to our grandson.

All 3 of us had a snooze afterwards.
