cardio/weight training combo

what are the "rules" regarding weight training following aerobics? Can I do them back to back? someone once said NEVER on the same day. Currently, I racewalk/jog 50 minutes 5 days/week, and do 30 min. weight training 3 days-but on the same day's that i do cardio.
My goal is to tone with small amount of weight loss (5lbs).
advice?

The probalem with cardio is that it tends to use muscle for energy and you run into a problem which is called the interference effect. Your body is getting confused because you are trying to lose weight by doing cardio, but trying to gain weight by working out. If you are trying to gain muscle mass, but still have that extra layer (or 10) to get rid of, then try HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). You will get a good cardio workout without burning too much muscle.
I don't know how much of an interference there is between working out on the same day as doing cardio, but generally after a good weight program, I don't have a lot of energy to do my cardio anyway. I generally do my weights and then a 20 min cardio one day, and then a 40-60 min cardio the next day ... with 1 day of the week for completely resting.
