Cardio Exercise Advice

Good Afternoon,

I am looking for suggestions of alternate cardio activities besides running that will give the same results. I have not personally tried elliptical machines, but have used treadmills and bikes. I try to supplement my weight training with some cardio to help with weight loss, plus it is good to keep the heart healthy.

Currently I use the treadmill and absolutely dread running on it. I can only stand about 10 min max. then hit the weights. I think I need more cardio in my workouts, but with the dislike of the treadmill I avoid it. I workout in my basement gym and only have the treadmill, no bike or ellipticle. I do jump rope now and then and it is ok, but does not seem like I get the same intensity.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My fave cardio exercises:

Elliptical machine (so much lower-impact than the dreaded treadmill)
Stationary bike (it's so easy to forget you're working out while you're sitting watching TV)
Swimming (weightless, relaxing... a total-body workout and a meditation session rolled into one)

I like inline skating, it's good exercise, won't hurt your knees, not too expensive and fun. I also hits though leg muscles so many of us neglect.

I would try varying up what kind of running you are doing. First, try running outside and not necessarily on a treadmill. If you are in good condition already, add some sprints in, or find a hill and try different circuits - it'll throw your mind off as well as your body.

Thanks for all the advice...

I will have to give the elliptical machine a try, my sister-in-law has one that is collecting dust, maybe she will let me try it out for a while.
