Cardio detrimental to strength?

what are your experiences with strength training while cardio training?

I have heard that running after lifting puts strain on muscle while it should be recovering and growing, and this makes logical sense to me. I have also heard that running before lifting (not a 5 minute warmup, like 30+mins) leaves you too tired to effectively strength train. This also makes sense.

So how about running on off days? right now I lift monday through thursday, and I just started running on thurs-sunday. yes i do both on thurs, it's shoulder day for me so I have time. What do you guys think? if my priority is strength gains am I compromising by trying to do cardio?

Running immediately after lifting is good for you. It increases HGH production in the brain and helps prolong it. If you're trying to cut up, it's a good way to lose some of that extra body fat.

The more common reason, I think, that cardio is bad for muscle is because endurance cardio (cardio that runs for more than 20 minutes or so) tends to burn some muscle protein for energy.

So as a general rule, if you're really trying to put on muscle, it's best to do sprints or intervals so you don't exhaust your glycogen stores over time and burn muscle.
