can someone describe the proper technique of doing a side bend.

i thinnk i'm doing them right, ive been doing them for a long time now. the thing is i see guys that are bigger than me doing side bends with 35 or 40 lb dumbells, while im doing 90 lb as of right now. i do have really strong abs and obliques though, stronger than what it would look. my obliques are more cut than my abs too. i use a 65 lb bar when i do cruches too. im just wonderin if i might be doign them wrong or something.
