Dont be too concerned about the weight lost...for all you know, it could be muscle lost or just water weight lost. Try observing yourself in front of the mirror....Do you look better than before? Have you lost some dress sizes? Do you look less fatty than before?

That's great! I bet you can find someone who can help you with a weight routine! Keep us posted :D

Great point! It is so true about looking in the mirror and not being so concerned about the numbers! When I really started using weights I was seeing my body really take form and I wasn't losing a pound! I was concerned at first, but I realized I had gained muscle and it showed, and had gotten much more definition!

I don't weight myself regularly anymore. Now it is all about how I look in the mirror :D

Hey guys.. I understand where you are comming from.. and yes I look different and I can wear smaller clothes.. but my whole point is: there is still excess fat around the aformentioned body sections.. and ist not something that building the muscle alone will take care of.. the physical fat itself needs to make like a banana and split!

I do go by my mirror as well.. and I take a side profile picture every 4 weeks (I posted some pics earlier in the thread.. but those are a few months old by now)

*pics moved to page 4*

thanks for the feedback guys!

Really great progress!!!! Congrats. Definitely add weights. Burns more fat and will get you the place you want to be.

Don't worry what anyone thinks when you use them because they are either more concerned with themselves or wasting their time worrying about others whe they should mind their own business.

Great job!

OK EVERYONE. you guys will be proud.. I FINALLY had my first weight training workout tonight! I wet to the gym and worked my arms, chest and shoulders.. I plan to incorporate abs and maybe legs later.

I have a few concerns though.. first, although I am already sore, I hardly broke a sweat or get my heart pumping.. I guess it just didnt seem like it was as effective of a workout as my running is??

also, I could only do about 20 min. worth.. is this really going to be a significant enough of a workout to help me to continue to lose weight? I plan on going every other night with cardio on the nights inbetween.

and lastly.. I read that I need to eat protein after weight training.. and people recommend fish, chicken etc. however, when you cook food like that, I know that the proteins become denatured.. so how is your body able to use them? are there other types of food i should be eatig after these workouts?

sorry for all the questions.. But I appreciate the help / info.

weigh in this saturday!

weights = anaerobic
cardio = aerobic

weight training 'the normal way' should nto get your heart racing. and sweating is an effect of body temperature, not exertion.

soreness will diminish as your body gets used to being broken down and having to rebuild. just take your time, and be steady and consistent. don't over train.

just because you denature protein...doesn't make it 'bad'. it just means you altered its molecular structure. eggs are LESS bioavailable raw...cooking them makes them BETTER for you. (as an example of why its OK)

...sorry, late for work!

Hey everyone, So today marks week 36 and I am down another 10 lbs.

current weight: 181

I am pretty excited.. If I can get down to 170 I will have lost 100 pounds!

I really need to dicipline my diet though, I have been snacking alot this month haha.

cheers!

Well done!

You are inspirational!

I used the cambridge diet when I was about 220 pounds and lost 42 pounds but I have slowly started putting weight on again. You have inspired me to get my finger out and start running. Mind you I'm not good at running but I will try and build it up slowly :)

It's great to lose weight isn't it!? :)

My biggest problem is keeping motivated! AH it's hard!

Keep up the great work

Hey thats great! make sure you get yourself a good pair of running shoes they make all the difference!

let me kow how it goes!

Hey everyone, Happy holidays!

So Saturday is my weigh in so I will repost then and let you know my progress for the past 4 weeks. But first, I wasnted to share a little bit of news and ask a question.

the news: so last week in my Human Development class our professor brought in a coupple of those BF measurement devices (the hand held ones in which you enter your info and it sends a small electric current through oe handle measuring how long it takes to go through your body into the other handle?) anyways.. not the most efficient, I know.. but it gave me a reading of 12.4% and on our handouts that fell into the (semi)healthy range! woot woot!!

haha but now for my question.. I just went for a run right now and it is raining outside.. anyways.. it was my normal run ..nothing special.. but about half way my lungs started hurting and by the time I got back home I was having mild chest pains.. WHAT GIVES?! is it the high moisture in the air that I was breathing in?!? cry me a river. it kind of pissed me off more than anything.. anyone else experience this?

let me know,

Thanks guys!

Today marks week 40. I am down another 7 lbs so my current weight is 174.

I was hoping to be at 170 by my birthday (dec. 19th) because that would have marked 100 lbs lost! and it would have been a cool b-day present to myself.

anyways happy saturday.. Still up for answers to my previous post^^

thanks everyone,

-Chris

good job
While reading your posts though I kept seeing you didn't want to use weights

And I completely understand a few years back when I was fighting the coaches kept telling me to use wights but all I did was cardio because I was already a very stiff fighter.

Kind of like a robot and I thought the weights would make it worse. but I did do lots of pullups, push ups, crunches, sit ups, back extensions, tricep press off a chair or something and medicine ball work. and I was in great shape with out weight.

The good thing about those exercises is they built muscle and strength without the cost of weights. Of course now I go to the weight gym pretty regular 4-6 days a week.

And I wish I had years before now

yea good point.. I started using the Gym at my university durring the semester and now after my runs, I will do curls with my 10 lb dumbells durring my cool down walks.. Im slowly creeping into it I guess haha

thanks for the info!

Well, wow, amazing work man.

I was actually getting ready to ask about extra running and losing weight. I understand the basics, the whole "Eat less, move more" concept. Just figured, based on the elliptical I use, I do 30 mins at a pace of roughly 6 mph and burn aprox 300-320 cals in that time. I do weight train a bit during the week, but I'm not concerned with putting anymore mass on. I just wanna lose the excess weight. I figured I could move to doing more cardio since I have plenty of muscle, just need to burn more cals/day.

Plus, I just feel really good when I'm running. I smoked for the past 14 years, quitting for two years (starting three years ago), started smoking again November of '08 and quit again a few weeks back. As stated I use the elliptical because of my knees, slight bow, and impact exercise tends to aggrivate them a bit, and overall, even in healthy runners, minimizing impact helps in the long run. I always hit that 30 minute mark and feel a bit disappointed that I have to stop. Also helps that Retro Fitness has a movie room where I can watch a movie to keep me "distracted" while I'm running.

The only thing I need to work on is evening out my biceps and toning my tris up a bit more. From 18 years of bowling my right arm has developed a little bit more then my left. Yeah, yeah. I've heard all the jokes before..... :mrright:

when trying to lose weight fast it is very important that you exercise regularly. I know, this is basically common sense but most people don’t realize how important exercise is, not only physically but also spiritually and emotionally. Not only do you burn calories when exercising but you continue to burn calories at a higher rate when you are done exercising. Go to the gym 2 or 3 times a week, play basketball with some friends even going for a nice evening stroll is beneficial.
