Caffeine Withdrawal = Weightgain?

I stopped drinking caffiene all last week until now and I seriously went from 110 to 120. Each day I had 1000-1500 calories mostly of corn flakes, salad, and occasionally hot chocolate. Also I did at a minimum 1600 pushups each day, and up to 3200 on one day. Anyway, I don't think it was muscle gain as there isn't much protein in my diet, plus I was lethargic from not having caffiene all this time. Any ideas as to how this happened?

Male, nearly 16, 5 foot 9.

Edit took a hot shower and did 1460 pushups and sweat a lot of water out and ate 2 and half cups of corn flakes and a doubleshot espresso with cream and I'm at 115. Still 5 pounds. Anyway, I think I'll go back to caffiene but in moderation compared to before. Still any comments would be great.

Caffeine is a diuretic, and if it was a large and consistent part of your daily routine then it's logical that you'll gain water weight as your body reaches equilibrium.

Oh I should also mention your diet is very limited, and the amount of pushups you do will only harm you as you're overtraining just one group of muscles, but this is something that others can address if you explain your diet and exercise in more detail.

was doing 40, now i do 60 and always do above 2000+ daily now. Usually between the hours of 4pm to midnight.

Can I ask why you think that 120 is bad for a 5 foot 9 male? That seems like a small number to me. Also with eating mostly corn flakes you are not getting the nutrients you need, without these nutrients (vitamins, fiber and such) you are going to start feeling really lethargic and your health is going to go downhill. I'm not trying to condemn, just help :)

Now that it's mentioned, I'm starting to wonder that too. I glanced over and just answered the question about water weight and caffeine, but now I'm really starting to wonder if perhaps you have an eating or body image disorder. 120 for 5'9 is underweight even for a small framed male and your extreme exercising also points to problems.

Hey man, good to have you here. :)

I really hope that you are trying to make a weight class for wrestling or something. If not, why on Earth would you be so concerned about hovering between 110-120 lbs, being a male?

I really look forward to hearing from you, I think you need a little bit of guidance. Even if you are shooting for a certain weight class for sport, you are going about it incorrectly.

Lacking is not even the proper word for what your diet is.

What do you expect to get out of doing so many push-ups? Is that the only exercise you are doing?

1000 calories is the normal maintenance for a 66 lb person. Think about that.

Lol, no need to worry, I to realize that 120 isn't high and that, by way of online BMI calculators, I'm underweight. The deal is that I got to where I am from 175, so I'm really just trying to see what works so that I don't gain the weight back. And although you say that 1000 calories isn't enough, I do gain weight if I go over that. As for the pushups, I'm not doing them for any other reason than i feel healthier afterwards. I wouldn't say I have an eating disorder quite yet, but am pretty obsessively self-conscious about this whole weight thing. Rest assured, I'm keeping things very much in a realistic perspective.

I would start to err on the side of, "I have a disorder." Really my friend.

You are damaging yourself, like it or not. You telling me that you gain if you eat more than 1000 calories proves that point. You wrecked your metabolism. Fixable? Certainly. But in order to fix it, especially to the point of damage you have caused, will almost certainly lead to some weight gain.

Why would you want to fix it? Eating 1000 calories for the rest of your life is not sustainable, nor is it healthy.

And stop with the pushups already. If you want to "feel healthy" go for a jog. Doing that many pushups and nothing else is only going to lead to biomechanical problems.

I am worried because of this. Most men would be happy at 175. I think you said you were 5'9. So you may have had some flab. Nothing that losing 10-15 lbs coupled with proper diet and exerice wouldn't have fixed. Instead, you starved 60 lbs off yourself.

Seriously, relax, not everything is should be taken so seriously. I'll go back to lurking around these forums. Good luck.

I agree - health is the reason we are here. No body is trying to browbeat you into feeling bad about your accomplishments, but Steve and Tony are trying to offer advice based on what you've told us. Steve and Tony have a reputation for offering great realistic advice and shouldn't be ignored without good reason.

If you don't want to hear it from this forum then I urge you to discuss your weight with your doctor.
