Broken Femur

So, I broke my femur on....October 9th. I've just recently started exercising a bit again, I can walk (not much). I've been doing sit ups/crunches, push ups, weight lifting, and a small amount of boxing.

I'm wondering if theres any cardio other than the boxing that I can do that doesn't really involve my legs. I should be able to start running again in January, but it ABSOLUTELY driving me nuts that I can't exercise much. I'm running out of ideas. Haha. Help.

I start physical therapy monday, and I like, need to start moving around more cause I'm going insane.

As insane as it's driving you, don't push too hard... a femur fracture is serious business and you need to make sure it heals correctly or it could plague you forever. When you start physical therapy, it's pretty inherent that you stick to the therapist's recovery schedule, not yours.

That being said, two good cardio methods in your situation would be an arm cycle or swimming with the appropriate leg flotation system. Both are arms only and effective at giving you a good cardio bout.

Very good suggestions. Use a pull buoy
and that will give you all the arm development and cardio workout you want without any stress on your femur.

Thanks!! I start physical therapy at the local YMCA on Wednesday. My Orthopaedic surgeon says I can start riding my horse again...not like thats going to happen cause I'm still extremely weak. Hopefully I can get a good sense in what I'm ready for with the physical therapy.

Hang in there,
I broke my femur several years ago and it took a lot of rehab to get me back in the game. Today I run a slow 6-9 miles and do weight training. At my age (50+) and with a leg that is now 1” shorter, it takes some doing, but it’s all mental.
Best to all Marty

broken femur

mafcpd158,

I have a similiar problem. I broke the neck off my femur in Jan and though the bone has healed my muscles are really messed up. I am also 1 inch shorter. What did you do about foot wear to compensate for this so you could run again.

The most I have been able to run is about 5 minutes on a tread mill at a 4.2 mph setting, pretty slow, but by the time I am done it hurts a bit.

Thanks for your post

Bill

damn!!! broken femur!!! oooooouuch!

btw, I was at the YMCA recovering from leg injuries (skydiving accident) when I caught the Ironman bug. so be careful :)

when I read your opening post I too was gunna suggest swimming.

broken femur

Yea it hurt....a lot, I don't recommend it. I broke it parachuting (not skydiving). Just trying to get back in the game now. Physical therapy seems to be going really slow as far as progress. It went well at first, but things have really slowed.

I am in my mid forties so I find I don't bounce back like I used to. Besides, the doc said my muscles looked like: "take a piece of meat and put it on a plate, then beat it until the plate breaks".

Sorry for the picturesque description :)

Bill

so you parachute? do you jump first? lol!

Obviously I parachute also, but just after freefall.

do you fly one of those updrafting parachutes? Fan on the Back?

welcome to the site

I am in my 40's too.

You can recover and be better than ever!!

Make it your mid-life "crisis" I DID heeheh :)

broken femur

I don't do freefall, just military round chutes, well atleast I did until last Jan :)

I don't usually jump out, just walk out at a 45 on put the feet and knees into the breeze! :)

Jumping is awesome, it's that sudden stop at the end the sucks.

No, I don't have two user names. I wasn't the one who started this post, I was just trying to figure out what shoes I could get for running when one leg is 1 inch shorter than the other now.

wow!

i would go to a real nice running center where you can pay like 20 bucks to join and they let you use shoes and help you work stuff like that out.

an inch isn't alot.. i'll be they can get you into maybe a flat, and a cross trainer that would compliment each other and work.

how much running do you plan on doing?

Okay, on August 10th I was driving my motorcycle home when I got hit by a truck, and my hip and femur were both broken in half. I am now walking but there is not much stregenth in my leg and I am trying to get rid of most of my limp, I have been going to the gym, but its not helping because I am not sure what exercises to do. What can i do?

Ask your physical therapist.

Get a script for physical therapy from your doc. You've probably been off your feet so long that a majority of your static and dynamic stabilizers have atrophied, and you're going to need a specific rehab program to get you to the point where your gait is corrected, so that you don't carry these imbalances onto a normal exercise regiment.
