breathing pain when running

I've just started a new fitness regime, however I find when I run I get a really intense pain in my throat when I breathe, I feel I could run for longer but have to stop as it hurts too much. Is this just because Im a little unfit?

If I try too hard, I breathe really hard and it hurts my chest a little. But, I have never had a pain in my throat. The prudent thing to do is have it checked it by your doctor. You should see a doctor before starting any fitness regime anyways.

I was thinking about your post for a while and trying to remember a time when my throat hurt running. The only times I can remember was when it was too cold. Have you been running in a cold climate? This may seem silly but- do you run breathing thru your mouth?

I know when I initially started running I had to breathe thru my mouth because I had not got the technique down. If it is cold enough, or maybe if you are breathing hard enough it might be the reason why it is causing you some pain. Eventually, I could run breathing thru my nose and the pain stopped for me. But as I said it was because of the weather in my case.

Sorry if I wasn't much help :(

Aside from the dry/dold climate (which is an excellent point), when you first start a cardio program, it's going to take your body some time to properly adapt to even a base amount of cardio, and this includes respiratory track response to increased airflow.

To start though. remember to breathe through your nose as much as possible to help heat and moisten the air (or wear a baclava on the extremely cold/dry days) and don't push yourself too far beyond your initial limits until your body has a chace to begin its adaptation process.

And of course, if it persists, see a doc.
