Brazilian's Diary

Hi, its good to see you so motivated but what you need is a sustainable long term plan.

Intense daily work outs are too much, and difficulty to sustain. Try working out 3 days à week, and increase your overall activity level the rest of the time.

For calories, you can calculate how many you need to eat at maitenance level and go 500 calories below it. My guess is that would probably lose weight at 1500-1800 calories. My philosofy is to eat as much as possible (healthy food), until weight loss stops. Than adjust the diet. In any case, 900 cal is way too low and not sustainable on the long term.

Also, keep in mind that if you want to work your body ( gym), you need to feed your body! And if you want to work out harder, you need to provide better fuel.

Thanks for your response Sweat ! I appreciate your views and advice. I might up my calories. Only because I think you might be right I might be eating too little and I end up hungry at night. I want a weight loss plan that doesn't make me feel like I'm struggling. I will definitely have to think about it!

Thanks again for your advice! I will try to incorporate it! :coolgleamA:

DAY 9 7/12/2011

Today I worked out for 48 minutes :) semi-intense.

By the end of the day I will have ate:

- 2 slices of frozen pizza (with the frozen pizza cut into 8 slices) Not pleased with this food choice but the fact that I worked out today is helping me live with it.
- 1 cup of Southern Jambalaya soup
- 1 veggie foot long from subway on italian bread, w/ lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, olives, onions, green peppers, a little bit of mustard, vinegar, spices, and american cheese.

hi Brazilian!

Great job taking the steps to get healthy :) I think you would really benefit from doing some research about weight loss. From the tools that are available on this site and also from the Mayo Clinic to lose 2 pounds a week you need to be eating 1900-2100 calories a day.

You've said twice now that you think because you have a lot of weight to lose that your body has plenty to burn without food, but that's just not true. I am by no means an expert on anything but from what I have come to understand is that when you do not supply your body with enough food it starts to break down muscle as well as some fat. You DON'T want it to do that. You want as much muscle as you can get IMO. It's why men burn more calories then women even if their both sitting doing nothing. They have more lean muscle mass.

As you lose weight you'll also need to lower your calories. I think when I checked for myself for every 10 pounds I lost I need to drop my calories by 50 to continue losing at a consistent rate. I started at 230 so I'll have to drop my calories 9 times and by 450 calories by the end of it to get to my goal weight. I could always up my activity also to make up for it, and of course weight loss never works like you have planned but that's something you learn to deal with as it comes. But if I started with my calories to low I know its not anything I could stick with long term.

Also you need to remember this is a lifestyle change you have to make not a diet. You need to find foods that you will enjoy eating for the rest of your life. Are you able to cook or prepare food at home? It seems like you eat out a lot. Even through you are choosing a better choice you have more control over food when you make it yourself. Like you cant control if they gave you the larger bread.. or skimped on the meat.. or whatever you get the idea. I like to make a sandwich at home in the morning and take for lunch. Now it took lots of trial and error to find a whole wheat bread that I thought was yummy lol but if your not picky that shouldn't be an issue.

I like cereal in the morning too. A lot of people frown on it but if I'm having a bowl of cheerios and an apple rather then a doughnut or just starving till lunch I think I have made the best decision for myself personally to start my day.

You could add in some snacks. I like the low fat string cheese, yogurt, fruit, baby carrots, almonds anything you like that's healthy.

So far though your off to a good start. Your actively trying to eat better and exercise. You've come here for support and were brave enough to post. A few tweaks here and there and you'll have a great foundation to kicking off some serious weight loss!!

Thank you for your response Solty!

And congratulations on your weight loss so far :) How long did it take you to lose as much as you did? Your words are wise and thank you for the sound advice! I really will consider that I'll have to decrease my calories as time goes on to keep losing weight. It's hard to properly control my caloric intake! I mostly eat out because it's easier since my job is usually very demanding! I also now understand that having more fat doesn't mean I can take in too few calories.

I know you started off about 30 pounds less heavier than I did. But that's still in a similar range. What's the amount of calories you consumed at the start? I guess I will try to eat around 1800 or 1900, even though it might be difficult! Is losing 3-5 pounds a week too much?

Thanks again I look forward to talking!

Thank you! This is week 10 for me. So in 9 weeks I have lost about 21-22 pounds. That's slightly over 2 pounds on average. I started out eating 1900 calories a day and trying to burn 300-600 depending on what I was doing. Cardio I burn a lot more then I do weight lifting, but in the long run the calories I'll burn all the time from building muscle will be well worth it.

I've bumped my calories down to 1800 now. I'll keep lowering as I go but probably not by to much because I prefer do more exercise. That's why I also left myself somewhere to go there also. I've played this weight loss game before and learned a few things.

I got down to 160 about 2 years ago now. I started with eating to little calories and going to the gym and burning 1000 calories. I plateaued a lot and getting to 160 was a struggle. Then I just stopped losing.. I was already eating around 1200 calories a day and everything says not to go below that. And staying at the gym even longer just wasn't possible since I was already there for about 2 hours. I ended up getting frustrated with eating to little and working out so much and seeing no change week after week. This time I am doing just enough to lose the 2 pounds a week and give myself the room I need to continue on.

I use a food scale for all of my food. I've learned that without weighing it you can easily eat a few hundred extra calories a day. Plus I don't have to measure out my cereal or guess on my turkey for my sandwich, I just put a plate or bowl on and fill it up. it gets easier over time since I eat the same things mostly.

I work in at a job where i am on my feet for 3-4 hours straight then driving to my next job which takes an hour. It would be easy to grab something while out but I bought a nice igloo lunch box and bring a sandwich, fruit, veggie and a snack so I don't need to grab anything. It saves me money too.

I would aim for 2 pounds a week. There is no quick fix for weight loss. Most of us that get to be 100 pounds+ over weight have issues with food that we are going to deal with forever. I know I will never be one of those people that can eat anything not worry about it. I need to track my food and to keep the weight off once I am there I am coming to realize that for me that's going to need to be a lifetime thing.

What have you been doing for exercise? I've been doing some p90X with the hubby and Zumba on the xbox.

Solty,

I mostly use the elliptical. I go pretty fast and it's a favorite of mine. Zumba is fun but I don't have the time to join a class. I suppose I could try it on the xbox though.

I took your advice and decided to eat a little more today. But I think I ate all the wrong foods? My problem with eating more is that I can't find a healthy variety of foods. Veggies and fruits alone do not fill me up.

I worked out for 30 minutes today.

Today I ate:
- 1 pack of oriental ramen noodles (380 calories)
- 1 small container of taco salad from the deli at a grocery store.
- A few purple grapes
- 1 Burrito bol from Chipotle w/ chicken, fajitas, lettuce, rice, black beans, mild sauce, and cheese. (585 calories)

Hi, you don't seem to eat much protein. Try eating more tuna (can or fresh), salmon, chicken breast, turkey ham, steak, fried eggs, or egg whites, yoghurt, lentils/kidney beans, avocado (good fats), peanut butter.

To become more aware of what you eat, you could count calories for one week (be precise). It's an eye opener.

Hi Sweat!

I do eat chicken breasts often (most usually in salad) if not those I sometimes have turkey breast in Subway (sometimes I get a veggie sub instead)

I try to count calories every day!

Hey Brazilian!

You seem really motivated to get healthy, and that's great! It's hard to have a job where you are very busy or it seems like you are forced to eat out all the time. The great news is... you're not! There are so many foods from the grocery store that you can buy and keep in the fridge or pantry to pack with you for a whole day. They even make them in ready-to-eat packaging, which makes prepping them in the evening or morning super easy, although this convenience adds a cost. But when you start saving money from eating out, which is a bazilliion times more expensive than buying your own food, you will save big bucks.

Things like string cheese, yoghurt, carrots, apples, nuts, seeds, nutrition bars, Slimfast shakes, hardboiled eggs (even picking up little individual salt and pepper packets is fun!! It makes lunch more enjoyable), ready-made salads (the ones from specialty grocery stores are awesome), pretzels, granola bars (but watch the sugar), microwavable soup, whole pieces of fruit, beef jerkey (low sodium), sandwiches with whole wheat "deli flats" and low-sodium meats and lots of fresh veggies, quinoa salad that you make a big batch of and then keep a big container of it in your fridge to portion out daily, etc... the possibilities are endless!

And the great part is, you will be able to eat a greater volume of food, because most of what I named is less calorically dense than something prepared from a burrito shop or whatever. Subway is a great choice, but I would try to get rid of the Italian bread and go with the whole wheat kind. Even moreso than a wrap, because those wraps are huge and have between 400-600 calories in just one WRAP. Not even including the meats and cheeses that go into it. Another option is, if you have a Jimmy Johns, they make what is called a lettuce wrap, which is just a regular sandwich without bread and wrapped in huge pieces of iceburg lettuce. It's SO GOOD, and the lettuce takes away a lot of calories that would have been filled by their (delicious) bread. But make sure not to choose the vegetarian option - the cheese and guacamole and mayo makes the veggie worse for you than a regular meat and cheese.

In reading your posts, it just seems like you have a small misunderstanding of the best things for you to fuel your body with. Things like ramen noodles, prepared foods that are loaded with salt and preservatives, will only make you feel bloated and sluggish. They won't fill you up and have no protein or fiber to satisfy you. And along with most of the other responses, you really should be eating a lot more healthy fuel than you are at this point. Logically it seems like, "Well I have a lot of stored energy (excess body weight) on me right now, so it seems like I should be able to have a huge caloric intake deficit and then my body will start using my stored energy." But because humans are animals, and we were never meant to have such a large excess of fat stored on our bodies, the natual reaction is for the body to use its energy stores very slowly when we have a calorie deficit. Your body is trained to think that 260lbs is normal and healthy, so when it has a calorie deficit in your daily intake, it refuses to use up your fat stores because it thinks you are in a famine (starvation mode). It wants to maintain itself at 260 because it thinks that 260 is necessary for survival. You will start to burn up fat, along with your muscle, (ketosis) which makes you super tired, your breath stinky (like iron), your hair dull, your nails brittle, your skin sallow and yellow and pale, and just an unhappy, easily irritable person all around. But if you ease your body into it with healthy, natural food choices, a regular expenditure of energy (daily exercise) and lots of sleep and constant hydration, you will show your body that it doesn't need all that extra weight to survive, and it will slowly but SURELY, start to fall off of you.

You are going to do so well at this! Keep reading and posting and learning about how to fuel your body and you will succeed FOR SURE!

Hi Chelsea!

Thanks for your response and the information! I knwo what you mean about getting food from a grocery store. I usually purchase veggies, cereal, and ingredients to make home made salads. Usually when I eat a salad it's home made!

You're right about the way body's read your weight/exercise/necessities. I researched on that after a few of my initial posts! It's hard to eat more calories with smaller meals (for me personally) I do not like eating small meals several times a day and would rather have 2 hearty meals and a snack.

It was the first time I've ate ramen noodles since I started my diet it wasn't supposed to be apart of the food I ate that day but it sort of just happened! I don't plan on eating more ramen noodles. And I do plan on sticking to healthier food like salad, subway sandwiches, fruits, veggies, etc. I'm trying to figure whether a carb free diet is the right one for me but in the long run that would be far too difficult for me.

Thanks again Chelsea! Hope to hear from you soon :)

DAY 11 7/14/2011

I worked out for 45 minutes today. Burned over 50g/ carbs!

What I will have ate today before I sleep:

- 1 TBSP of feta cheese w/ grapes and some almonds
- 1/2 portion of chicken cobb salad from panera (250 calories) Skipped the side of bread
- 1 chicken burrito bol from chipotle w/ chicken, rice, black beans, fajitas, tomatoes, lettuce, and cheese (585 calories)

I tried to eat closer to 1,200 today!

You did great :) I had Panera today too. I like that they give you the option of an apple over bread. I did 45 mins of cardio today too so go us! :hurray:

How much water do you drink a day? I think that was one of the worst things to get used to with drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day. I have to pee all the time! lol

I know ramen isn't "healthy" but what I always wonder is what would you have eaten before? I will admit to being lazy on some days. I will just eat cereal for lunch or a can of soup. The difference is I used to just swing by a drive through and grab 1500 calories worth of food and come home and eat. So for me currently the soup is a HUGE leap in going the right direction. It doesn't help that I am as picky as a stubborn 4 year old.

I'm glad you're eating more. In a few days you'll have to tell us how you feel.. more energy.. feeling better. etc.

Thank you Solty! :) I still am trying to get up to 1800 like you suggested (at least for the first 10 pounds) but it seems nearly impossible.

What all did you eat today? what'd you get from panera? The chicken cobb salad is tooo good to only be 250 cals :) love it! Not high in carbs either.

I figure I can't always accurately measure what they put in the Chipotle burrito bol but I left room for extra calories. Great job on 45 mins of cardio! Go us!!! I am SUPER picky too. Only certain things fill me up and I do not like eating 5x a day, I prefer 2x a day. Oh, and drinking that much water is nearly impossible for me!!! It's very difficult. Maybe I can replace diet soda with water. It'd be at least something.

Hi everyone!

I worked out for 45-50 minutes again today! :)

So far I've ate

- a homemade salad w/ lettuce, tomatoes, feta cheese, and croutons, and vinegar dressing (no chicken in my salad today)
- a few blackberries
- a couple almonds

I'm going to Denny's in a couple hours w/ a family member that's visiting my town! I have decided I'll eat an omelet there. Probably a chicken breast omelet. Checked the nutrition facts on the menu online, I should be good!

Update: AHHHh so I failed!!! I got to denny's. Ordered a veggie omelet instead of a chicken breast one (which was fine), gave the hashbrowns on the side to my cousin, but ate a piece of toast w/ the omelet. As well as 2 and a half of their pancake puppies (filled with pineapple and coconut ahhh!) Omelet: 460 calories. Slice of toast: 115 calories. Pancake Puppies: 152 calories , Total calories = 727

I got the smoked turkey on wheat with no cheese and put a little bit of mayo on it along with the broccoli cheese soup. It was only 420 calories for both of them. I try not to pick my food apart any more then calories right now. When it comes time that I need and am ready to take the next steps and watch fat and carbs etc closer ok, but for now the calorie watching is enough.

That day for food I had cereal for breakfast, 2 servings of carrots on my drive to work, panera for lunch, and I made cheesy sloppy joes for dinner with veggies and almonds and string cheese snacks. I ended up at about 1565 for the day.. a little low but not to bad.

You did better at dennys then I would have :p Those pancake puppies are evil so amazing job stopping at 2 1/2 ^^

Are you down any weight? I am having a small stall thanks to being sick all week. Cardio is almost impossible to do with bronchitis.

Wow I bet! First of all, feel better hun! Bronchitis is nasty, I wouldn't wish it upon anyone, take care of yourself!

I love string cheese I might start those as a snack as well :) Today I did not get the time to work out, just got home, (it's 3 AM and I do not have the energy to work out!)

Also I ate horribly. Had Indian food this afternoon (soooo good) had 4 pieces of triangle naan, 2 mini samosas, had some very tasty matar paneer (cottage cheese pieces in yummy orange curry), a little bit of spinach, and some white rice.

At the movies I had a lightly salted pretzel w/ cheese (tried to use as little cheese as possible) and a few hours ago I had a cheesy bean & rice burrito from taco bell. (The burrito itself was 480 calories) And the pretzel was about the same! Ah I'm disappointed in myself! I made no healthy food choices and didn't work out. I hope to redeem myself tomorrow.

:ack2::ack2::ack2::ack2::ack2::ack2:

Day 14 7/17/2011

DAY 15 7/18/2011

- Taco salad w/ chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, guac, and a bit of sour cream (but I didn't eat the shell, I don't like the shell!)
- A few blackberries
- A subway footlong w/ italian bread, american cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, olives, mustard, vinegar, spices, green peppers

Worked out for 40 minutes today!

heya girl! great job with your workouts! :hurray:

I think you have room to take some of the extra calories i had yesterday off my hands for me lol.

What'd you eat yesterday? I'm not sure about it by the way! Because I did not get a work out in yesterday. I'm realizing that working out everyday gets a little harder after about a week or two! But I still want to try. Definitely don't want to skip today. Yesterday I ate Tomato Garden Vegetable With Rotini soup from Subway (100 calories) then I had two slices of butternut bread w/ swiss cheese pickes and ketchup. And then I had a veggie footlong from subway w/ out mayo or oil!
