If you're talking Greeks, then they used the olympics to prepare for battles (especially Sparta.) Which probably was running, lifting boulders, and other things to prepare.
 
They had to hunt to survive. Really depends on what "peoples" your refering to. Go over to t-nation there's a number of articles on that subject by John Berardi.
 
I guess I mean the Indo-Europeans, the Germans, the Latini (Romans), the Macedonians (Ancient greeks). Did they actually lift weights like we do? Or was it just the constance of warfare, and the intense cardio workout of war, that lead them being awesomely in shape. What did they eat?
I'll check out T-nation. Thanks, I didn't think they'd have anything on this subject.
 
Mostly train to fight.. Like practice fighting.
