BikiniBound's Diary

Wow, that is the coolest thing I've heard! When is the exam? What qualifications does one need to be a US diplomat? Does that mean you get to park in foreign places without fear of reprisals (i.e. tickets)??! Here all the foreign diplomats have immunity from our parking and other fines. This is highly annoying! OK, sorry I got off track, excellent idea. Where would you love to go? Back to Asia I'm guessing. Please do stay out of the Middle East, I hear the State Dept is desperate for people who will go to Iraq  .

Ditto, Claudia. But Kimberly, that would be so excellent to open a new and totally different chapter of you life and GET THE HELL out of your situation!! I hope it's all it's cracked up to be! Let us know...

Hey Twin, well you already know my response, so I'm not going to say anything more on that topic. But I love ya, and I know your going to make the right decision for yourself, when your ready!! :hurray:

I know exactly what you mean about feeling lighter and knowing if the scale is going to show you something good, I'm the same way!! of course, because we are twins. LOL LOL

I really don't have anything planned for this weekend, can you believe it?? So I might just get dolled up and take some recent pics to post, I want to see for myself that my chin is no longer there, my H keeps telling me it's gone, but I've had it so long, it's hard to believe.

I hope your weekend is a good one, and that your scale is down 2 pounds, OH YEAH!! I'll be looking forward to seeing what happens.
Hugs to you gorgeous!
Kim

Yeah, I think the parking tickets apply under diplomatic immunity..lol. There is a chance I'd get sent to Iraq or Afghanistan. However, those posts are usually for short durations--6mo to 1yr as opposed to most posts which last from 2-4yrs. You also get hazard/danger pay, and extra money for the lower standard of living in those countries. I would have to be worldwide available, so I'd have to go wherever they sent me. Chances are, they'd stick me in Korea or a French speaking African country at first. You move around every 2-4yrs, so that would definitely satisfy my wanderlust. :D

Please keep in mind that passing the written exam is very difficult--only about 30% of the people who take it pass. I like my chances for it, though. But..then you have to go on to the next interview phase which is oral and would take place all day in Chicago. That is very grueling. If one passes that, you have to get a medical and background clearance. I believe they have about 33,000 people apply for the written exam, and take about 500 people per year. So....it's probably not gonna happen for me. However, I'll never know unless I try. :)

Claudia, these are the requirements to be a foreign service officer:

1. All applicants must be U.S. citizens on the date they submit their registration package.

2. On the day you submit your registration, you must be at least 20 years old and no older than 59 years of age.

3. On the day you are appointed as a Foreign Service Officer, you must be at least 21 years old, and not yet 60.

4. You must also be available for worldwide assignments, including Washington, D.C.

They are not very restrictive, but the whole process weeds out most people. The written exam covers politics, government, history, geography and american popular culture. A college degree is not required, but most FS officers have a bachlors, and according to their website, over 75% of recent hires have advanced degrees. That sucks, b/c I only have a bachelors. But, I have spent 7yrs living overseas, and speak French and Korean (not fluently)--so that helps me.

I can't believe you haven't got a ton of plans for the weekend, but I know you'l find something to do tokeep you busy--like watching football. :D I'm sure that DC is gone. I hope you do take pics--love to see an update of my lovely twin. :)

Scale was still 226 today. No change. I was gonna get in a extra 30min on the exercise bike after my circuit training yesterday, but my damn cell phone kept ringing with biz calls, and I ran out of time to do it.

nice place to visit - chicago is - I have an air mattress you can crash on :D

Yeah, I've been to Chicago many times--it's only 3-4hrs away. I usually just go there for the day b/c hotel rooms are so frickin' expensive. But it'd be great if I'd finally get to meet you! We could go out on the town and troll for men...lol

you lose absolutely nothing by trying - so just do it missy...

Yes, ma'am!! :gnorsi::gnorsi:

I think it would be awesome! I did not know you spoke french, I'll have to try to remember mine. I have had 4 years and at one time was a fluent speaker and reader (and a decent writer, but it was lacking), but after not needing it for 5 years, I am a little rusty.

I've pretty much completed the appliation except for the following questions. Not only are these tough for me to answer (aside from the first one), they want a way to contact someone who can verify your answer--cannot be a spouse, close family member or person under my supervision at work. My biggest problem is that those who could verify my answers are strangers or people I've lost touch with. :(

1) What are the important knowledge, skills and abilities that you would bring to the Foreign Service? (List no more than four.) Why do you consider these skills important for the Foreign Service?

2) In the Foreign Service you may confront obstacles and/or adverse circumstances. Describe briefly how you have dealt with such a situation in your experience. (What was the situation? What steps did you take to deal with the circumstances/obstacle(s)? What was the result?)

3) In the Foreign Service, you will be called upon to interact with people from different ethnic, racial, religious, geographic, economic and other backgrounds. Describe a significant experience you have had with another culture, either abroad or in the United States. (What was the experience? What did you do? What was the result?)

4) Communication skills are critical to successful diplomacy. Describe a situation in which you used your communication skills (either in English or another language) to further an aim or achieve a goal. (What was the situation? What steps did you take to deal with the situation? What was the result?)

5) Foreign Service Officers are often required to manage projects, demonstrating the ability to plan and organize, set priorities, employ a systematic approach, and allocate time and resources efficiently. Describe a project you managed or helped to manage and how you sought to achieve the project’s goals. (What was the project? What steps did you take to manage the project? What was the result?)

6) Leadership can be defined as motivating others, encouraging creative solutions, establishing positive team relationships, or significantly influencing the direction of the work. Describe how you have demonstrated leadership, either on one particular occasion or over time. (What was the situation? What steps did you take to show leadership? What was the result?)

I've been sitting on this since September. :ack2::ack2:

Vraiment, tu parles francais aussi? Yeah, mine is really rusty, too. But I've found that if I get into a situation where I need to use it, it comes back quickly.

Well then WTH??? That's tough, no wonder you been stumped! :ack2:

Yeah, they are very tough for me to answer. I think I got #4 handled, though. 2 down, 4 to go! :ack2:

On an unrelated note, I got measured at the gym today, and had the owner let me know what my measurements were when I joined in late January, and what they are today. So, here they are:

Jan. Nov.
Bust: 51.5" 45.75", -5.75"
Waist: 45.5" 42.5", -3"
Abs: 49.75 45.75, -4
Hips: 52 43.5, -8.5
Thigh: 28 24.75 -3.25
Arm: 14 14.5 +.5
Weight: 277.5 226
BMI: 42.3 36.6 -5.7%
Lbs of fat on my body: Start: 117 current: 83.5 -33.5lbs
Total inches lost: 27.25. I am very happy with how I look below the waist..lol. But being an apple means I'm top heavy. My waist is only 1" smaller than my hips. :ack2:

Je parle francais...or is it j'parle francais...see I am confused already. Although I could read your statement, I always could read it better than write it!

The two things that come back to me easily are absolutely useless. Mystere et boule de gomme (Mystery and gumballs, which is the french version of "for me to know and you to find out") and How to ask for a light (useless as I do not smoke, but used as a pick up line in the french class I toook). I cannot even remember how to spell it, only say it.

Well, we've already sort of been separated--while he was in Australia for 9 weeks over the summer. I'd say half way around the world from each other is pretty separated. We only talked about once every 10 days. And at the time, I was considering divorce--so...

I set a timeframe for mid-October, but then with my dad's surgery, I let that go. So now I'm not sure what to do. H and I are talking a little. He asked me if my day was better today. I told him it started out shitty but got a bit better. He then asked if I cried--jokingly. I told him that I had cried today and he was surprised and asked why. I told him bc I'm not happy. "Unhappy about what?" he asks. "Unhappy about everything in general." How many times do I need to tell him? I've laid all my cards on the table like, twice now, telling him exactly why I'm unhappy. I feel like I'm :beatdeadhorse5: We need a jackass emoticon.

This made me cry. :) Thank you, dear. :hug2:

Ah, probably not much point this week--I'm pretty sure Stacy's got everyone beat. :D<- she's got my vote!

Well I didn't meant to make ya cry. Unless it was a good cry then by all means it was totally on purpose!

Well I dunno what you could possible do to clue your H in on the reality that is your world. It sounds like he is living in his own lil space.

Just know you have a support network right here online and whatever you decide to do you'll have lots of backup!:hug2:

WAY TO GO!!! :hurray:

You are kicking some serious ass!

And I had no idea how extensive and difficult it is to get into foreign services! But it seems like an amazing opportunity!!

WooHoo I could refer to your "Diplomatic Pouch" then !:D LOL

Sounds like change/oppurtunity knocking at your door. Good luck jumping over the hurdles they've laid out for you. It sounds like you would be highly qualified for this job. Maybe Diplomat to a sunny tropical island nation with lots of white sandy beaches? :D
