Big J's Diary - "It's not whether you get knocked down; it's whether you get up."

I'm not a diary kinda guy, but here it is. I'm going to start writing in this each day and seeing what I can do to help my progress along.

My name is Justin and I'm currently at 550.1 lbs at last weigh in. I want to lose around 200 more pounds. Less than a year ago I topped the scales at 599lbs. I have been struggling with my weight for years. Obviously. So this is just another step in trying to deal with that.

I am very dedicated to doing this the natural way and without resorting to surgery and drugs to try and fix this issue. I know I can do it, it's just a matter of finding what is going to work best for me and consistently for me. I want to use a combination of exercise and eating better to lose the weight. I will be keeping my diary up to date daily with the things I eat and the exercises that I do.

I think that my goal is realistic. I don't expect to lose the weight over night. I am shooting to lose 2-3 lbs a week until I am at my weight goal. I know that my weight goal is probably still overweight for my height, but I would be much happier at that weight and healthier. I have already started moving towards my goal and am continuing to work on it until I have reached where I want to be.

I will be setting a reminder in my phone to tell me to post in this diary so that I do not forget. It will likely be in the evening when the children are in bed.

I don't know if anyone I know IRL will be reading this diary, but this will be my place to fully admit all the food I eat and drink. There are times when I feel I need to hide my food and I need to acknowledge that and work to stop doing that. I will admit it and acknowledge it here.

My first diary entry...

Breakfast - 2 Chicken Thighs, 2 slices of bread with mayo, glass of water. (~1050 calories)

Lunch - 2 Packages Top Ramen, 2 slices of bread with butter, glass of water. (~960 calories)

Dinner - Leftover Broccoli Beef, Chicken Breast and slice of bread with mayo. 2 glasses of water. (~1100 calories)

Snacks/Drinks - 20oz Root Beer, 64oz water, half a 1liter of bottled water, chips with ranch dip. (~750 calories)

Total Estimated Calories - 3860

Exercise - Walked around the apartment complex twice with my son and also walked to the store about 2 blocks away. Cleaned the kitchen, did dishes and 2 loads of laundry.

Thoughts - Looking at my diet shows me that it's horrible. I thought I was doing ok, but the chicken was fried and the mayo and butter are pretty much straight fat. The snacks are horrible and man I need to work on that. I did a really bad job today eating. Not a good way to start the diary off. The calorie total really surprises me. I have never counted calories and had no idea. Wow. Got alot of exercise in today though, so that's nice. Good job there.

Hi Big J, Its so awesome to see you here. I think one of the harder things to do is be honest to yourself in how good or bad the things we eat or drink really are. Not only that, then write it down for all to read. Good For You! If I don't write down what I eat, I (conveniently) forget how much I've had and then over do it. Good for you in getting active. Eventually you will find it easier and easier to increase how much are doing. I looking forward to watching your successes. - Michelle :)

Hi Big J, first off, congrats on the weight loss that you have had so far. That's always very good. And also congrats and moving ahead with your plans. I know how hard it can be to stop bad eating habits, I'm struggling with it myself. Good luck and I'll check back often.

Thank you everyone for your replies and words of encouragement. It's nice to see that there are people out here that are dealing with what I'm dealing with and can help me out.

Disciple, thank you for letting me know that there is hope. I'm happy to know that there is someone out there that has been where I am and has needed to lose as much weight as I have and has been successful at it. Did you do surgery or has it all been through diet and exercise? Please feel free to message me anytime.

hey big j, i saw the title of your diary and just had to take a look and just like you say "it's not whether you get knocked down, IT'S WHETHER YOU GET UP!" amen to that! lol!

i see you had a pretty active day taking the walk with your son and doing lots of household stuff too....good stuff! WAY TO GO MAN! your definitely off to a good start.

the other thing is you seem to be reading alot on nutrition now as well because your now calorie counting and know the good stuff from the bad stuff...that's also really great! baby steps right? all that matters is that there's awareness and a change, your definitely headed in the right direction and also congrats on the 45lbs you've lost so far! all the best xoxo

Thanks Cherry, I appreciate that support. I'm certainly trying to get things down right and educate myself on it.

Tomorrow definitely looks to be a better day as far as calories. Baby steps.

Oh as time slips by...

Breakfast - Mashed Potatoes with Hamburger Brown Gravy, Doritos, Kool Aid. (~684 calories)

Lunch - Salmon, Scalloped Potatoes, Garlic Bread, Kool Aid. (~952 calories)

Dinner - Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast with Stuffing and Cream of Chicken Soup, Pink Lemonaide. (~532 calories)

Snacks/Drinks - Bowl of Cheerios, Doritos. (~644 calories)

Total Calories - 2812

Exercise - Drove a couple places today and got weighed, turned in some paperwork to college and such. So I went up and down the stairs once and walked a little, but no more than 5 or so minutes. Pretty bad day for moving around. Cooked and cleaned like normal.

Thoughts - I have yet to figure out how to make this a priority in my mind. I can't seem to grasp that I need to do this every day and focus on this every day. I got my hands on all the episodes of "The Biggest Loser" and am hoping that I can start watching those to try and find some motivation to get my head into gear. I need to do something and I don't know what.

Just thought I would pop in and say hi J. I can see you are starting to add some better food choices and you are trying to get your body moving. I know how hard it is for both, and all I can say is keep doing it. It would be great if you could add some more fruits and veggies.. *sometimes thats a tough one for people* The biggest loser inspires me, but then all that hard work happens..lol. Keep positive and strong, there are lots here to support you and cheer you on. - Michelle :)

i think watching the biggest loser helps alot....i'd never watched it all these years (i think i avoided it because i was not ready to start on my weight loss), but i just recently got a copy of the australian version and was amazed....i think what amazed me most is the capacity of the human body. the things that those people could do from day 1 and not knowing that they could, and seeing them all transform from being lethargic to super fit, from big to small, and so on.

don't worry, it's tough for everyone especially at the start, but once you start to see the changes it makes you want to keep going.... i think your off to a great start. WE CAN DO THIS!
