Best video I've ever seen on nutrition

Warning: It's long. But prepare for the best in depth look ever in how the entire diet industry is screwed.

I only wish he would have gone more in depth on the difference between high gi carbs and fruit/veggies/nuts, etc rather than just touching upon it by saying 'eat fruits and veggies and nuts'. It comes off as "all carbs are bad" when thats indeed not the case. And of course there is the obvious slant of this not applying to athletes where we want carbs. Regardless, amazing watch.

Ok I'm back.
He wasn't saying that "all carbs are bad". He actually mentioned that you should only lower or limit your intake. He said you should eat complex carbs. He also mentions in the last 5 minutes of the video (since one women shouted "we're eating dessert") that a little bit of sugar is no a problem.

His main points are:

  1. "Bad" Cholesterol is not necessarily the enemy
  2. Lower fat diets don't work and aren't healthy
  3. Limiting carbs/sugar is the key step to losing weight and being healthy
  4. Drugs like Lipitor only raise the survival rate by .4% (out of ever 250 people, 1 is saved and all of the rest pay $1000/yr and suffer major side effects like memory loss, erectile dysfunction, muscle pain and diarrhea)
  5. Only when your cholesterol is 290-300 or more are you at risk of heart disease
  6. The Food Pyramid of America is causing obesity
  7. The government and "bad" scientists are aware of the skewed "clinical" results but money drives them to keep quiet
  8. There should be a disclaimer on drug company labels or articles to show that this scientist has or doesn't have a financial conflict o interest
  9. Sugar causes heart disease (it stiffens arteries, makes them stiff, tears occur, bacteria infection sets in)
  10. LDL Cholesterol (bad cholesterol) helps white blood cells repair arteries "it is the hero not the villain"
  11. Lowering cholesterol will help you live longer is a myth
  12. Butter is OK, Margarine is not
  13. Smoking has also caused an increase heart disease (and it takes roughly 20yrs for it to cause lung cancer)

Besides that, because of this video I've searched around the internet to find that a lot of people agree that the US food pyramid essentially promotes obesity. This made me want to look at what other countries food recommendation charts looked like. It's interesting to see the chart of other countries compared to the US chart.

I'll create a thread for that topic.

Why is margarine bad? I don't eat very much of either (I use them in cooking, sometimes, as a replacement for oil) and butter makes me want to hurl. I don't know why, I just have a visceral reaction, so I use margarine. (Pretty rarely, I usually use either oil or oil spray. And I don't put margarine on bread/ potatoes or anything like that)

This is what he said:
Starting in the video from 56:30 he talks about margarine and butter. Margarine started to be marketed as a health food over butter. But since then, heart disease has increased. Because margarine has trans fats (an causes obesity and cancer).

from me: *I don't know if there is margarine w/o trans fats. If there are then he wouldn't be talking about that kind. Also, I'm just reporting on what he said. Please don't kill the messenger lol ^_^ (UPDATE) I see that there is margarine w/o trans fats in stores. But he's talking about coming from the past starting in 1909 where this was not the case way back when.

Oh no, it's not your fault, I'm just curious (and I don't want to watch an hour long video!). My understanding's always been that butter's loaded with saturated fats and some margarine (like the stuff I use) has "better" (poly/ monounsaturated) fat. Trans fat seems to be much more mentioned in the US than elsewhere- as far as I'm aware it's not brought up as a concern in Australia (where I'm from). (Although I did look up my own margarine some time ago and it contains trace- no trans fat)

Taubes and Atkins would be proud

He lays out all the talking points of the low-carb camp... disassociates saturated fats and cholesterol from heart disease... raves on meat and butter... government has lied to us... those in the low-fat camp need brain transplants... etc. What is always absent with this perspective is the benefits of fiber, antioxidents, and phytochemicals found in carb-filled fruit and veggies and legumes.

YouTube has a couple good low-carb vs low-fat debates

Oh I understand this. I said "it comes off as". The post above mine sums up exactly what I was thinking when I watched. The health benefits of the good carbs were somewhat neglected. My concern is people not familiar with how the macros work being misguided a bit and actually forgoing things like veggies, fruits, nuts from thinking they are bad because of carb content or trying to meet some sort of silly macro carb deficient %.

Basically it's stuff I've always known, but never seen anyone put forward and break down so many studies to dismantle 'accepted wisdom' near as effectively.
