Bench press max. How many reps?

I know heaps of people bench press their weight or more but can anyone bench press their body weight or more at more then 10 reps?

I'm asking because for the first time today I tried and was able to bench press my weight for 2 sets, doing 3 reps each... woohoo!!

I weigh about 83kg and my max is 135kg 2 times so yes I could bench press my body weight more than 10 times if I choose too. I'm not quite sure why you asked the question though. Well done though being able to do your own body weight. Don't get caught up though just in what weight your lifting as your close to your max and doing just 2 sets of 3 reps is not the best way to improve strength or hypertrophy. If your going for 3 rep sets you perhaps want 8 or 10 sets. This is quite intense but improves your max very quick. If you don't fancy that I would drop the weight and do more reps as you will improve quicker. This is obviously assuming good diet. Just a side point, don't fall into the trap of judging yourself just on bench press and exercises like squats and deadlifts really show how good overall strength is even more than bench press.

But most of all keep on going.

I should have explained myself better. I am not obsessed with bench pressing, it is an exercise I do at the gym in my total workout. Was just surprised I am able to bench press my weight. I'm definitely not caught up in the whole bench pressing thing at the gym, probably the opposite of it. I see groups of guys that stand around the benches and do just them only. Pull ups or chin ups are probably more of an obsession for me, probably because I can't do a lot so I'm working on this at the moment.

andyroid20 - that's crazy bench pressing that much more then your weight! Nice work! Oh and thanks for tips on getting improvements. I'm only a little under 2 years into training at the gym so am still considerably new in this.

You should check out the bench post as there is some decent lifts in there. I was just making sure you didn't fall into the trap I did with benching as it is very addictive and its very easy to become unbalanced.
All the best with your training.

I weight right around 260 and can get it 12-13 times on a good day. My trainer told me the bench mark of a very strong person is if they can get their body weight 10 times.

I agree with this as at one point that is all I wanted to do. Bench presses are great and they are fun, but do very little for you outside of the gym. My addiction then moved to squats and deadlifts. My new addiction is CrossFit, which I think is much healthier. :)

I agree with andyroid. In fact Rippetoe talks about "bench press masturbation" that goes on in many gyms - a little gross but it illustrates most people are infatuated with only benching.

congradulation Buenos. It sure is a good feeling to know you are getting stronger and doing things that you thought were impossible before.

Myself personally, I am trying to bench press TWICE my bodyweight. Currently, I finally broke 315 lbs (1 rep max) for the first time in my life and I weigh 172 lbs.

Ok I have an update on this. Today we did Lynne, which is a CrossFit workout that is 5 rounds of max reps bench, pullups max, rest for 2-5 minutes, next round. On paper seems like a simple workout. The bench is to be done at body weight.

Prior to the workout, we had to do 50 small box jumps, and 50 1 pood kettelbell swings. Once the warmup was done it was time for the workout. So I started with 260lbs. I was able to 10 reps (maybe without the warmup I could have done a few more, maybe not). So I can do 10 with body weight but no more. After the first set I moved to 225 for the next four sets. All in all I'm mildly happy with the result. Would like to do 15-20. Or would like to drop my weight by 40 pounds and do 20 or so.

Now that is impressive!

I can bench my body weight 5 times max
