Before I begin weight training...

This looks like the right place to ask this question. Basically I am interested in taking up weight training BUT the only problem is that I am underweight for my age (I am 18 years old and weigh 62 kg). Before I start any weight training program, would it be best for me to put on a bit of weight beforehand to get the best results? I am really skinny so yeah I think I need to put on the weight beforehand.

Anyway the main question I am gearing too is what would be the best solution into me gaining weight? I have literally tried everything, I eat and eat and eat and just don't but on anything. Is it true that Protein shakes would help me gain weight? Weight Supplements or anything, if I got some of them (which I have never tried before by the way) would these be usefull to take along with my normal diet over the next few months in attempt to put on a few more kilos?
