Beagle's No Lie Zone

Don't underestimate the speed with which your body goes into conservation (read: slow metabolism) mode. The MORE we eat, the more we burn, the only catch is to be MUCH more active than normal and your metabolism will soar. None of us has enough time to be exercising all day long which is why we need to cut calories at all, but the reality is that if you cut calories by more than 10% of your previous average your metabolism will slow down at least a little to compensate. Then you need to offset that slowing with even more exercise. It's terrible, but true. Get back on your normal, healthy track, and you'll be fine. We are interested in your experimental diet, so please don't feel like we're down on you just because we're concerned about you. We care, so we lecture (just like Mom! - at least mine :p ). Take care!

Hey don't worry about the loss, it was a loss and thats the main thing. Sometimes i find that when i have a really good week my body doesn't seem to recognise it until the next week. Who knows maybe next week you will lose more than you expect! Don't let it get you down you are doing so well! Hope you are having a good day!

Listen to missprincess.....if your body thinks you are depriving it too much it will send you into "starvation" mode and will not let go of any weight.

I had surgery last year and for about a month I ate about 1000 calories or less a day. Just because I was sick and recovering. And let me tell you, I didn't lose anything. NOT ONE POUND!!!! I know now my body wants at least 1200 calories a day and if I comply it will let me lose weight.

I know you are disappointed in your loss this week, but if one thing is not working for you it's time to shake it up and try something else.

Keep your chin up honey. You are still doing extremely well. Look at how much weight you've already lost!!!!

Hey guys thanks for the support and advice... I'm trying something *slightly* different this week. Using the same basic math, and using net calories over the whole week, rather than day-by-day, I'm doing one day of "normal" eating, and a vigorous workout, and then one day of basically a fast - a couple of meal replacement shakes that have hoodia in them (and work as appetite suppresants really well!), and are only 175 calories each.

I'm hoping that the "normal" days will keep my metabolism up, and then the really light days I can just burn through all those calories that I ate the day before. Keeping my body on its toes and all, so to speak.

So yesterday I had a nice Quizno's sandwich for lunch, and a couple slices of pizza for dinner - they were so much more delicious after depriving myself a whole week! And a total of 700 calories burned at the gym (after class I did 40 mins eliptical and a half hour low-impact walk, and then after work 20 minutes on the eliptical). Today was supposed to be shakes only, but I ended up having some baked fries that were made for dinner... and since I kind of messed up the plan for the day I just made myself a ham sandwich and so tomorrow will be a shake day instead.

I've also been getting in LOTS of water - 3L today easy :)

*hugs* I hope the shake up helps boost ur metabolism and ur body gets the hint. I hope you make it to your goal. p'-'q *crosses fingers*

Hey Beagle, your new plans sounds awesome. It's probably just the shakeup your body needs. And I totally think our bodies work on a weekly average. I notice that loss or gain for me usually shows up about three days later.

Plus, you're giving your body good food on your normal days and it will totally fool your body into not going into deprivation mode.

Anxious to hear how you do this week. Keep us posted. :)

lol, so I'm an unintentional liar. After my last post, I totally didn't have a "shakes only" day. In fact, I think I've scrapped this whole speed-diet thing. I'm not going to make it to 170 by the end of the month and I'm just being mean to myself to try and continue to convince myself otherwise. I've been going back to eating "normally" the past few days, and so far, the scale hasn't spiked up like I thought it would.

I'm just going to have to step up the exercise to lose weight faster than I have been :)

Hey My Girly You Can And Will Do This And When You Find That Right Diet That Wiorks You Will Do It And Rock! It Takes Time I Know And We Been On This Track A While Now But We Are Gonna Shine And Hang In There And Keep It Up I Am Back To Make Sure You Go All The Way!!!!!!!!! Girl I Know You Can Do This I Have No Doubt And I Know Its Hard But Keep Pushing And Keep Motivated And Keep Focused And It Will Start Coming Into Place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lets Rockkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

That's good to hear beagle. Our bodies do need real food. And I think you might be pleasantly surprised with the scale if you continue to eat good healthy food and keep up with your exercise. I bet you will be busting that plateau sooner than you think!!

Beagle Bailey, you can do it!! :D GOOD food, exercise, water . yup. YOu CAN do it! :D I have faith in ya :D

I think in the long run that's the right thing to do Beagle. I've known a lot of people who took off the weight speed dieting, but I never met anybody who kept it off.

Tsk, someone should take a look at the subscription notification script, I didn't get any sort of notice that there were new posts here and I had asked the board to :(

Anyways, sorry I haven't been so consistent with checking in. It's been difficult finding more than half an hour at a time to myself, and most often that half hour or so is spent on a little nap or a bit of TV since its usually between school/gym/work/other commitments.

However, I can say I've been going to the gym more often, and drinking water more consistently. I had a couple of days of not-so-good eating as a bit of a backlash against the deprivaion (a chocolate bar AND a bag of chips in one day :(), but I think I've got it under control now, and don't feel the cravings for sweets nearly as much.

Over the next week, I am not going to be focussing as much on my food as I am on the exercise. Of course I am still going to watch what I eat, and count my calories and such, but not be nearly as restrictive with it. I'll stick with 1300 calories a day, plus or minus 200, but I MUST get into the gym for a least 4 sessions a week, and at least 30 minutes a session! One of those I'd like to be muscle work rather than cardio; I need to track down one of the gym employees next time I go though to show me how to do it right. The other night I tried doing ONE push-up, and I couldn't! That "armpit" muscle hurt really bad the next day too :( I still want to develop that muscle set in particular because I have been told that good muscles in there make a girl look "perky". I want to develop my arms in general though because the just look flabby and completely toneless.

The legs seem to be doing pretty well, I can rock up the eliptical pretty hard. I've actually switched to the treadmill on Josh's suggestion - the machine says that it doesn't burn as much calories, but I push myself so much harder and sweat so much more that it must be better for me. If not calorically, then definitely in terms of heart and lungs capacity and endurance.

Okay, rules for next week's self-challenge!
1. 1300 calories +/- 200 [less than 100 carbs and 50g of fat per day!]
2. 4 (or even 5) days of at least 30 minutes exercise - no carry-overs or extra exercise to make up for or justify a deficiency on another day! If I exercise extra it is for its own sake!
3. For heaven's sake, I have to update this darn journal EVERY DAY.

Wow Beagle, if all your deprivation release was was a bag of chips and a candy bar that's not bad at all. I think you've done the very difficult task of putting a halt to a speed diet without quitting the program altogether.

May as well start my tracking again - A Fill in the Blank Day!

Food:
- breakfast shake - 178cals, 2g fat, 10g carbs
- 1.5 cups of broccoli soup [approx 12 oz] - 185 cals, 8g fat, 21g carbs
- [planned] Quizno's Honey Bourbon Chicken (small) - 360 cals, 6g fat, 45g carbs
- [planned] 1 cup Quizno's cheesy broccoli soup [approx 8 oz] - 146 calories, 9g fat, 7g carbs
Running total (including planned): 869 cals, 25g fat, 83g carbs

Drinks:
- 2 x 591mL bottles of Coke Zero: 0 cals, 0g fat, 0g carbs
- 1 x 750mL bottls of water: 0 cals, 0g fat, 0g carbs

Notes: today I really need some pop! I slept terribly last night - 5hrs punctuated with 2 wake-ups after weird dreams I can't even remember - so I've been relying on the caffine for some energy rather than carbs (sugar). Also, a great find!! A nutritional guide for Quizno's! Granted, it's Australian, but the menu seems to be pretty comparable to the US/Canadian chains' (though it would seem the names change for some of them). The only thing is that energy is listed in kilojoules rather than calories, so you have to multiply the kj number by 0.24 to get the calorie count.

Hey Beagle....girl you need to eat some more today....869 calories? I know you may think it's weird for me to say...but will you please eat some more!!! LOL!!!!!!

You've got some good goals set for your self-challenge. And you seem very focused and motivated. You've got about the same amount left to lose as I do. I'm really shooting for mid October. Let's dance on down that ticker together....pound for pound!!!!

Oh I know I need to get more in... but what am I going to do? My options are
a) get something full of fat and/or sugar and/or carbs from the vending machine, or
b) get something after work - and only 1 or 2 hours before I got to bed!

Neither of those seem particularily appealing ways to get in 2-400 calories without hurting myself in the long run. I'm not really even that hungry either, and I hate eating when I'm not hungry... makes me feel like I'm doing something bad after spending so long retraining myself to only eat when I need to. :(

Yeah, that is problematic. I see your point. Can you try to consume more calories earlier on in the day? Add a little extra for breakfast, and maybe a little extra for lunch? I heard this quote once that I thought was cool......

Eat like a Queen for breakfast
Eat like a Princess for lunch
Eat like a Pauper for dinner

Actually makes quite a bit of sense to graduate one's calories throughout the day consuming less at each meal and ending on a light note for the day. Just a thought.

Hope you have a great day!!!!

I've heard of that quote too Scarlett. It's very good advice actually cause although you do consume more calories early in the day, you also have the entire day now to burn it off. :)

I too heard that quote and LIVE by it :D heheheh

Hi ya Beagle Bailey :D how goes it? I hope you were able to solve any problems that arose :D I KNOW you kicked butt - right? RIGHT?! ;) heheheh

Hope you've had a good day! :D
