Be the Tortoise, Not the Hare

Well, it's been a while! Not a month yet, so I guess that's good :) I just read a couple of random threads and realized how much I miss the antics, haha. I don't really want to focus on eating better, I just want you all to be my friends and make me laugh!!

But aside from that - I'm plugging along with my goal of getting more consistent about running. Four times last week, and I just finished up number two for this week! I even started an informal running group with co-workers to prepare for a relay race we have in September. So all is well :)

I'm glad you're doing well. I hope you come around more often. I want to have runners around here! I'll do my best to try to entertain.

Bowling champions always look cooler if you sort them by height.

Well, Q, I got up early for a 4 mile run today! How's that? Although I've suddenly got this weird urge to give up running and join a bowling team. I'm not very good at bowling, though.... Maybe I can be a bowling team groupie?

This morning's run was my first time out in a while, but that's because I was out camping/hiking this weekend. Friday was a 1.75 mile trip to the campground with a 30+ pound backpack on. Saturday was 7 hours of hiking, mostly easy going except a trip down into and back out of a ravine. Then Sunday was another 3 miles or so with the backpack. Pretty awesome trip but *very* tiring. Thank goodness the Bruins won their game last night in regulation so I could get to sleep at a normal hour!

Nice Run! A camping/hiking trip sounds great. I don't follow bowling myself, I was just searching for a new hair style and that shot had 5 solid options for me. I don't really follow any sport, but being from Texas hockey is pretty foreign to me. I've seen one game in my life. I saw the Seattle Thunderbirds play Vancouver. It was minor league, but it was lots of fun. Glad your Bruins won.

I'm having a hard time deciding which haircut I'd suggest. Your profile pic suggests a hint of Handsome Bowler #1 action already, so maybe you need to mix it up a little ;-) Definitely some timeless choices, you can't go wrong, really!

I grew up in Oklahoma so I also didn't know hockey existed for most of my life, but I've been up here for ten years now. (Street hockey? Field hockey? I'm still not sure THOSE really exist.) Anyway, I wouldn't call myself a true fan but during playoffs I feel like I have to at least pay a *little* attention. Plus I think the boyfriend enjoys have someone around to say "watch this replay!" to, so I try to stay awake when I can.

I have to come clean. The profile pic is photoshopped. Yep, those aren't even my real fangs. It was wrong of me to use my extensive photoshop skills to deceive. I feel much better getting that off my chest. I actually went for a "high and tight" buzz cut. It's a first for me, but it's much cooler and 0 maintenance.

I'm afraid the good run for your Bruins is up. It's three straight for the mighty Blackhawks! from here on out. Be proud, 2nd place in the Hockey season is a great accomplishment. :D

I Yep, those aren't even my real fangs.

WHAT?!??! Not your real fangs?!?!?? I don't even know what to believe anymore. Next you're going to tell me the odd-looking fellow pretending to be a fairy who comes into my house sometimes at night isn't REALLY searching for teeth.

Just finished up with a 3.8 mile run with five of my co-workers. We're doing a big relay race in September.... Each 12 person team will cover 200+ miles together, with each runner being responsible for three separate legs. We did one two years ago in a different location and it was *amazing.* I decided it would be good to train together this time, so I took on the role of organizing weekly runs for a group of us ladies. There were a couple of grumbles about the distance of today's run but everyone thanked me at the end for pushing them. We walk when we need to, and we have one girl who runs ahead and loops around to add a little distance. It works out nicely even though we're all at different ability levels.

Now I am picking up takeout because I am HUNGRY, and I'm opting for a salad instead of the chicken fingers that I'm craving. Boring :)

Eating 100 calories of pretzels and a Vitamin Water when you want gelato and a mixed drink is roooouuuugggggghhhhhhh.

Just remind yourself nothing tastes as good as being slim feels! The pleasure we get from eating something naughty is gone so quickly. Not worth it!

It's been a while since I checked in. It sounds like you're running is going well. I hope that continues for you. :)

And, I totally agree about how eating healthy is tough when you're craving something different! Some days are such a challenge!

Slickzchik, I wish I would have had your post to read before I had some gelato :) But I resisted eating it straight from the container, which meant I only ate half as much as I originally thought I would. Small victories, right?

Mandy, you didn't miss much! I've been talking about my running because I'm proud of that, but the eating has been pretty bad. The late night snacking has gotten out of hand. And I had a LOT of beer this weekend! I went out with some co-workers on Friday, to a friend's house for the Bruins on Saturday, and yesterday we had a late lunch with a couple of margaritas that inspired us to get into a beer frenzy for the rest of the day/evening. I actually *wish* I felt bloated or something right now, but I don't. That would have been more motivation not to drink so much in the future but I feel totally fine! I guess I didn't eat much, though. We split nachos five ways on Friday night, skipped lunch on Saturday and just had a big dinner, and did the opposite yesterday. Maybe it balanced itself out calorie-wise, although none of it balanced out health-wise.

So the number one item on the menu for today is water, water, and more water. Lunch will be wheat berries, grilled chicken, cucumbers and tomatoes with balsamic vinaigrette. Dinner will also be some form of grilled chicken, because we cooked up a LOT last night and didn't actually eat any.

Hi Laura,

I just read some of your diary. It looks like you have been through some stuff as we all have been-lol. I found late night snacking was my downfall too-especially when I am by myself. That is how I got to 320 pounds- not to scare you or anything-lol. I now have a rule that has become almost a law- no snacking after 7:00. How so I do it? I actually have a coffee or water through the evening. It seems to stop the craving.

Relay race? Sounds fun and exciting. Sounds daunting too-haha. How long do you end up running for your three legs? It is much more fun to run and train in a group-motivating too!

Thanks for dropping in Cowboy! I'm TERRIBLE about snacking when I'm alone! It's not even necessarily because I'm bored - I'll find myself scarfing down food as I pass through the kitchen even if it's inconvenient to do so (I've carried handfuls of gummy bears all over the house, haha). During the cooler months a nice cup of herbal tea helps a lot, but I haven't found an alternative for the summer yet.

For the relay race we haven't gotten our assignments yet, but it probably varies between 10 and 25 miles total, depending on your ability. We have a lot of people doing it, so they break out the teams in order to keep us all on an even playing field. Last time I think I ended up with 13 miles, and my legs varied between 3 and 6.5. We want to know our team assignments soon so we can figure out what we're in for, but no luck yet!

Yesterday was a pretty darn good day! I woke up and did maybe a half hour of strength training. Squats, calf-raises, donkey kicks, girl push-ups, etc. Also went for a 3 mile run despite the 90 degree heat. Four co-workers were with me, and we always stop at the halfway point to rest and regroup, but other than that I pushed through the heat and ran the rest of it. We were all proud just to have gotten out there.

I also managed to avoid mindless snacking! I had a big bowl of cereal with dates and soy milk for dinner and then I was done for the night. Instead of eating I showered, did some laundry, emptied the dishwasher, washed a few dishes... I woke up feeling pretty darn good about myself!

Nicely done Laura! Keeping busy is the key for me too. The heat makes a big difference. At least there is always a breeze when you're running.

3 mile run in a 90 degree heat? that's amazing! great job avoiding the mindless snacking. the small change will make a huge difference.
