Bdubedub & Bugdude's Weight Loss Journey

I suffered with anxiety and depression for years. You need to talk with your physician to see if lexapro and/or xanax would be beneficial. They make this stuff for a reason, and your physician can help you determine if your situation calls for it. It can really make you feel like a new person and get your stuff together and focus on what you need to do. I know, man, I've been there. You really need to talk with your physician as soon as possible. Don't delay.

Bugdude - so sorry to hear about your knee - 12 months of recovery - my heart would have sunk initially too. But - you can also look at it as an opportunity to find new workouts. Perhaps you could take to swimming for the spring/summer if you have access to a pool.

Hope everything works out the best it can with the knee.

Well tomorrow is my small weigh in... I weiged in at 301.5 or so on 3/23/2011 which was 8 days ago.... Im down significantly already from that... I'll post the exact weight on Friday (Tomorrow) but im down quite a bit from passing my 5lbs lost in 8 days. Great motivation!

That's great dude!!!! Stay with it and it will work over time. We tend to lose weight in burts in between plateaus, so don't get down about it. Just know that your body naturally cycles that way.

My surgery was yesterday and it went very well. Not as bad as they thought. Looks like the total recovery period will be 6 months and not 12 afterall. I can put weight on it as I can tolerate with the brace and crutches. I start Physical Therapy on Monday.

Hang in there man...we're gonna do this!!!

Hey Bdu - CONGRATS!!! That's a fantastic loss! You should be SOOO very happy!!! You're working hard, and it's paying off! The fact that you're losing weight, is a sign that you're doing something right, AND that you can do this! I can't speak for everyone on here, but I know that my weight has really brought me down in many MANY aspects of my life. I don't do the things I want to do, when i was in my relationship I was always self-conscious of how I looked, I never wanted to be touched or seen...my weight ruined my life. But I've had enough of it! And I'm going to change it! It sounds like you've had enough of it too!! It'll be a hard, and long journey, but it'll be worth it! And even when i don't see a loss, I can still get happiness out of the fact that I'm accomplishing a goal that I've set out JUST for me! And I'm doing it myself! You can do this! And as BugDude said, you should talk to your doctor- they can help you get over the hump, and into a place where you can go forward!! And another great thing about eating healthy and exercising, is you'll notice changes in your mood! :) You can do this! You've already proven that you work hard and are devoted- because you've lost the weight! Continuing on will get easier and easier! And you'll notice more and more changes!! It'll be worth it!! :)

@ BugDude: Oh gosh! wow! sorry to hear about your knee, but 1) wow congrats on the fast surgery (I forget that it's different in Canada, you would have to wait MONTHS up here!! hehehe), and 2) CONGRATS ON THE NEW RECOVERY TIME!! I can't believe Monday (today) you could be in therapy!! Did you go? How was it!?

When you were talking about the set back, I was thinking about things you could do outside of weight on your legs...have you thought about shadow boxing? Sitting down and doing it can be GREAT cardio!! I hear that you can really REALLY get your heart rate up doing that!

I hope your knee is doing well! And that you were able to make it to therapy today!! Take care !:)

Hi Guys,

I have been reading your posts since the beginning. I was interested because you both started at about the same weight that I did- I started at 320 pounds and I am 5'11". I am now 180 pounds. I am also older than both of you at 49. Both you guys have such a determination to lose weight. It is nice to see. I know how daunting it is to be over the 300 pound mark and want to lose 100+ pounds. I just wanted to let you know it is possible. You both can do this!!

Bugdude- sorry to hear about the surgery. You actually don't NEED to exercise to lose weight- I lost 100 pounds without any exercise what so ever. It is just about watching what you eat but you already know that. Do what exercise you can and you will continue to lose.

Bdubedub - 11 pounds in 8 days - WOW. I lost like that the first couple of weeks- it is so nice to see the scale drop that quickly- adds to the motivation.

You both are doing a great job!! Keep up the good work!!

Thanks to everyone for the support and encouraging words!!! I started physical therapy today (Tuesday) and I go 3 times a week. They gave me stretches and exercises to do at home. My leg is stiff, but the muscles are in pretty good shape, responding well, and I didn't lose much size in the right leg at all. Negligible really. The absolute most I can bend my right leg at this point is a 90 degree angle at the knee. The therapist said that's actually great at this point 5 days after open knee surgery. He was really encouraging and thinks I'll recover much faster than 6 months. Slow and steady.

As for diet, given I'm healing tendons I'm concentrating on high protein and not really restricting calories at this point. I'm not going hog wild and still trying to avoid empty calories, but I don't want to hinder healing by limiting total calories. As I heal and the leg gets stronger, I'm planning on getting back to a strict regimine with diet and exercise both. I can still do the bowflex and total gym, but it may be a couple weeks before I get back on them. I'm still very tired, and the afternoon naps rule. I haven't had afternoon naps since I was a kid...I'm thinking they can be addictive.

I'm almost completely off the pain meds now too. Those things made me itch like crazy...not to mention they back you up worse than a block of cheese. The first several days after surgery it felt like I had been shot in the knee, so I was on a lot of them. It's tolerable now, so I've backed way down.

Like many aspects of life, we will encounter setbacks, challenges, and things we never anticipated. You have to develop a mindset of "ok, we will deal with this issue and get back on track" and not let these things completely derail us. Life is full of surprises...the key is how you handle them and not how you let them handle you.

I got around with a cane today and no crutches!!! I even went out and played a few holes of golf (leg in a brace and walking with a cane). It was kind of awkward, all my weight on my left side and swinging with my arms, but when you're determined you'll find a way. My knee is progressing so much faster than I or my surgeon thought. It's been a week and a half since surgery and I played golf. I'm stoked!!! I'll be back on the treadmill in no time.

WTG MAN! I made a post on here asking if anyone would follow me on you tube if I posted a video each week of my failures and sucesses and gives tips and advice or even ask questions to epople also struggling with obesity. I think it would be a GREAT idea.

Bugdude I haven't heard from you! If your not on the WAGON get BACK ON THE WAGON! Were in this together & I WONT LET YOU GET OFF!

Dude, I've been gone a while but I'm back. My knee surgery recovery went super and much faster than the surgeon thought possible. Been busy playing golf, taking my cars to car shows, and going on trips with the family.

But a week and a half ago something happened. I BROKE MY FOOT on my other leg!!! Actually, my wife broke it. She left her suitcase in the bedroom floor right where I have to walk to go to bed...in the dark...and I tripped over it and broke my left foot. Unfortunately, it has hurt much worse than the knee. Excrutiating actually. I'm in an aircast, but no surgery. This could take a little while, but after the first week I started seeing some slight improvement.

The good news is through all of this a vast majority of the weight I lost has stayed off. Minimal weight gain. So, I'm going to grab myself by my bootstraps and keep on going. Slowly for now with the broken foot, but slow progress is better than losing ground.

Lets keep on trucking!!!!!!! Broken foot, operated knee and all!!!

lol.... Man it doesnt get any worse then that... you havent had goodluck at all... im very glad to see your maintaining tho.. great job.

My wife had back surgery right before I had knee surgery. Unfortunately it didn't help her much. She's tried every medication, chiropractors, physical therapy, surgery, now physical therapy again. At least my stuff is getting better eventually. She's been struggling with this stuff for almost a year. And when momma is hurting, everyone is hurting!!!!

Oh, and I'm 43 today. I had cake!!! I'll cut back later...I only get homemade chocolate cake once a year.
