Bare with me but...

I never really introduced myself but...

Ive used the search forums and my word was too short.
Anyways...

I'm dying to lose some weight but motivation around here is,... not so good.
I was considering about buying a Wii and it helps you get off your arse. Games included are Boxing, bowling, baseball... the good 'ole calorie burners.

My question is...
How well if at all, can a Wii help lose weight?
I'm in no hurry.
I've read around and the "Wii sports exercise" I have heard about is somewhat impressive.

30mins for 6 straight weeks
Drinking Right
Watching and controlling what you eat.

In total he loss 9 pounds. Which, as how I look at it, is not bad.
Now I'm already drinking water and eating right.
All I'm missing is the Wii.

I have several hours a day to myself watching the young'ins. So, that 30mins maybe be an hour or more for me.

So, any thoughts, opinions, hard evidence?

I have a few friends who play Wii and at first they said they were going to use it as a means to "exercise," but that was short lived. Another game people have been using to lose weight is Dance Dance Revolution. (DDR) This is completely different from Wii, because you actually have to dance and keep up with the music. I think you're better off either throwing on some music at home and dancing around... or just getting out there and going for a brisk walk. To each their own.... good luck with it.

Well as I understand, some Wii games might not need as much effort to play as some sports games Wii has to offer. One I'm looking forward to is the boxing one. Constant moving, jabbing, ducking and whatnot. Maybe your friends didn't try long enough or maybe something was up with their diet? I dunno but hey Ill give it a shot.
Thx for the input though.

Nah... actually they realized they would burn a lot more calories actually getting out there and working out instead of jumping around infront of the TV. haha One has lost 55lbs with just walking alone. The other is down ~25 lbs from going to the park and playing basketball... and he started that about a month ago. hahaaa My friends are something else. hahaa

Depends, what do you want to compare it to?

Will it burn more calories then say, a conventional game controller? Sure. Should it be the centerpiece to a weight loss strategy? Hell no, were talking a marginal calorie requirement for randomly moving your arms.

As the wise woman above said. If we are comparing "video games" for exercise. DDR beats it hands down. DDR is a weight baring exercise that requires whole body movement. Obviously, this translates to it being "better" in terms of calorie expenditure.

Watch your food, watch your calorie intake, keep up with the exercise and you'll be fine.

I agree DDR might be better, but I've heard you need to put in some SERIOUS time to loose any weight using that. Walking is still #1!

We just bought a Wii and I have to say I definitely don't work hard enough to even break a sweat. I try hard to win etc etc but if anything it hurts your joints before you get any actual exercise. However it is a ton of fun and certainly burns more calories than sitting on your butt with an older game system. Boxing can be a slight workout but there's a lot of downtime too where you are waiting for the next round to start. Go for a walk/run then play some Wii to wind down.

My girlfriend's husband just purchased her two brand new DDR games and new mats, so being the curious person that I am, I told her I wanted to give it a go. Ummm I don't know about you, but after 5 minutes I was sweating... and yes, they do have AC in their home. It just depends on what level you place it on. (I'm stellar at dancing, so I was in the advance level.. haha!) I will have to say this for all you women who are top heavy.... invest in a VERY good sports bra when doing DDR.

If you are going to try to use the wii for your exercise, please be sure to stretch beforehand. Trying to go in and energetically shadowbox for awhile without having ever done any prior workout like that, and you are asknig to tear something, if not at least get some excellent tendonitis. It's fun, it's a game, but take 'er easy at the start.

We have a Wii

It's what BF wanted for his birthday present and we had to stand in line at midnight to purchase it.

If you're very sedentary (like I was) it might just be the boost you need to get you off your arse.

The sports pak that comes with it probably won't be enought to keep you motivated...but it's great fun and if it's the thing that starts your body in motion...it's worth it.

DDR can be a very sweaty game... too be honest I can normally only do most of it on the easy level and am not coordinated enough yet to do it on the higher levels. And really... the easy level is boring. The jumping around without a sports bra also plays a part in the game being less fun.

As far as the Wii Sports games, there isn't much as far as exercise goes. Sure there is movement, but not enough to work up a good sweat... that is until the upcoming Wii Fit game. It will include 40 fitness activities and will keep track of what you've done... Some of the exercises in the game actually require you to do pushups, balance exercises, yoga, and dance aerobics. It looks like great fun! Check out: Wii Fit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

and YouTube - Wii Fit E3 2007 Introduction and part 1 of Demo.

Plus! The Wii has many group activity games and could be a lot of fun for the family.

Good luck!

Wii is actually coming out with a fitness game pretty soon

As a girl who owns two arcade DDR machines at home, I would say DDR is great for cardio but not really effective n the long run....you will lose weight

but you will def get used to it. If you're a beginner you WILL lose weight if you play under workout mode...

I have some bad ass calluses on my toes from playing so much, but really I haven't lose much weight off it since the first spurt...

IT IS A GREAT GAME THO!!!

I am NOT a fan of the wii tho...it's a waste of time for a traditional gamer like myself...the sensor bar is buggy and it really isn't an enjoyable experience for me...

BUT hey ya never know it may be effective and it aint bad in price range

sorry for going off topic, but for that buggy sensor bar... you can replace it with a couple candles or any other light source. the sensor bar actually just emits light and doesn't sense anything. it could be the position of your Wii... i hope it helps:)
