Astrolab's Crazy Diary

Welcome back! I did the same thing. I went a few years without posting and just came back a week ago. Let's not give up this time!
So you want to lose about 8-9 lbs? That's quite doable! Very reasonable. What sport do you play?
Looking forward to your aggressive posts.... >.>

Hi Ashy

This forum seems more active than it was 2 years ago, which is a pleasant surprise.

Yes I think these last 10 lbs or so are totally doable.

My main sport is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I've been on/off due to injuries...been back on since December. No serious injuries since then, thank goodness. In 2010 I broke my collar bone fighting and it really screwed things up for me. Led me to gaining a lot of weight back.

I've figured out that for whatever reason, my body is every day, always, trying to gain weight. So if I am not doing vigorous exercise 4-5 times per week, I am pooched.

In any case, I love going to gym and training.

And my office has a gym on site, which I finally joined and its very convenient. Today I worked thru my lunch hour and then went down to the gym in the afternoon.

Good luck Ashy, I look forward to hearing how you are doing.

Sounds like you are one busy body. That's great. I believe in the old saying "you don't use it you lose it." So you won't be losing anything any time soon. I think all offices should have gyms. You are there so much. They should want to encourage healthy staff members. That's for a rant for another forum type. ;-)
Perhaps you will inspire me to get moving!

Saturday morning here...I ate well all throughout yesterday, and was rewarded by the scale this morning: 164 lbs.

Looking forward to a great Saturday!

Monday Update....

Things are good. Saturday my sister came to visit and spent the afternoon with us. This kept me away from training but I figured it was better to spend a nice afternoon outside with her and my family than go into a sweaty gym.

Sunday was a great day too, went for a 1 hour mountain bike ride. Very nearly fell down a steep gully. But caught onto a tree right before I went down. Different path next time.

Eating habits were good this weekend. Not really calorie counting, just adhering to my golden rule: No Bad Carbs.

By Bad Carbs, I mean a carb that isn't coming directly from a natural fruit or vegetable.

(and also, i don't eat too much fruit either...my main source of carbs will be green vegetables...never anything white).

So Sunday morning, scale said 161 lbs. That's down 3 from previous day...not sure if the day before was artificially high, or if Sunday's low weigh in was artificially low...who cares really.

After my bike ride I had a big hamburger patty and an enormous pile of stir-fried green beans. Tasted great, and couldn't finish them all.

Today's Monday and the scale still said 161 lbs.

This is good. I think two'ish years ago I got down to 155 lbs, but only for like 10 minutes.

So this week, if I can get under 160 lbs and stay there, I'll be thrilled. Definitely want to be at 155 by end of July.

Not sure if I can get to the in-office gym today...forgot my security pass card and don't want to inconvenience anyone by borrowing theirs.

I am going out to lunch today here at work....crossing my fingers I don't go nuts and order something brutal.

Until I get the chance to put one of those nifty trackers, here's the bottom line:

Yesterday's weight: 161 lbs
Today's weight: 161 lbs

Monday night update..

Finally here's some before/current pics.

The before is 2006. I probably weighed 200 lbs. Not looking good.

This pic was from a few weeks ago, when I was around 160. Hard to see my body but its slimmer. Still overall a nerdy look to me though. Still working on that.

Soon I will get a better 'now' picture.

Had a fun night tonight...took my son to his soccer game, then took him out for a snack. I had a little ice cream sundae, plus some post-dinner pasta tonight. But I don't think it will cause a problem.

Photoshoot tomorrow directly after work, so I will need to get take out dinner. I will have to pick a healthy option, but I think I know a good place to go that won't be too bad for me. Good night

Tuesday morning here...scale was forgiving today, even after eating more than usual last night...two bowls of pasta after nine PM, plus an ice cream sundae.

No weight gain.

Going to gym today during my lunch hour...looking forward to it.

Red Alert! Scale went Up this morning!

Just kidding, I think it's just water weight. Unless it's real weight, earned by straying a bit on Monday.

In any case, no big deal.

I worked out 1.5 hours on Tuesday, and will be grappling for 1.5 hours this afternoon.

In fact today, I need to be mindful to eat enough (of the right) food to prep for heavy exercise later today.

Last night was a pretty good night. Went straight from the office to a photo shoot, with two young'ish sisters. Plan worked *perfectly* and I was able to shoot in that perfect pre-sunset light that looks dazzling.

I'll have to get back to that same spot again...I've shot there during the day but never in the evening.

Also, I took some time to read other posts on this thread. It's really cool to see so many people working toward their goals.

Happy Thursday everyone.

Well Wednesday was great...made it out of work early enough to make it to the daytime training session. E. was the only person there so we rolled for 1.5 hours, in 20 minute rounds. That made for a great workout. Lots of sweat.

Hung out at home in the evening. It was a great night. Ate healthy.

Forgot my towel today so no gym during the day, but probably a good idea to rest today, most of my muscles are sore from yesterday.

Weight is coming back down from the spike a couple of days ago.

How about last night's hockey riots?

Vancouver loses Game 7 of Stanley Cup finals and the fans take to streets and go bananas.

Hello!!!

Well look at what the scale did, it gained 2 lbs since yesterday.

Thankfully I have an explanation. Yesterday my work had a barbecue / lunch thing, and I ate PASTA SALAD.

Pasta is one of those carbs that after eating, I will be craving JUNK the entire day.

I resisted the urge all afternoon to get something sweet, but then after eating my healthy dinner, I splurged on 3 slices of pizza that I had cooked for my kids.

Pizza breaks the rules of physics and chemistry....eat 1 lb of pizza, gain 2 lbs. Eat 1.5 lbs of pizza, gain 3 lbs. It is devil-spawn. But very tasty!

In the last few days I've also been letting my guard down and drinking diet soda pop. No more!

OK so here are the changes I have implemented to cease this silliness:

1. No more diet soda pop. Tastes good, but it is garbage nutritionally.

Did you know that most aspartame in food products is a waste by-product of the bacteria Bacillus thermoproteolyticus? These bacteria are used to create aspartame more cheaply than via chemical synthesis, which can tend to produce a more bitter tasting aspartame.

2. No more pasta salad at lunch. Yesterday was actually the 2nd day in a row I ate a small portion of pasta salad for lunch. Not happening again.

3. No carbs at breakfast. This is easy to do, I just need to take a few more minutes of time in the mornings. My normal morning food is protein only...I was letting it slip a little. Back on track today.

4. Bring more towels to work! This sounds silly, but if I have no clean towels in my gym locker, I can't go to gym at lunch. Need to shower and get presentable before I get back to my desk.

Starting in July I am going to rent a LARGE locker...which costs more money but I will load it with 10 towels at all time so that I never have this problem again.

Sub point to 4 is, I'll be sure to hit the gym every weekday, except for Wednesdays, when I am training martial arts in the afternoon.

5. Watch staying up late. I was up a couple hours later than normal last night, and snacked a little bit (heavy carbs of course). Idiotic.

6. Keep on-hand plenty of high-protein snacks. I haven't taken the time in a few weeks to stock up at home; will do so this weekend.

I'm not bummed out at all about this...when I gain weight due to logical reasons, it doesn't bug me at all. No mysteries behind this one.

Have a great Friday everyone!!

Friday update:

OK went to gym today...good workout.

Scale there more reliable than the one at home...weighed in at 161.5, which is better than the 163 my home scale was telling me.

So this gives me a goal...by Monday June 20, I want my gym scale to read:

159

Happy Monday

Well looks like I did it....this morning it was.a little hard to tell my weight on the scale but this afternoon I got a clear 159. I worked hard this weekend to hit that goal.

that said, tonight I splurged a little and ate some junk carbs.
will be interested in what scale says 2 days from now.

Saturday at bjj class, it was totally hot and humid. tiring but fun.. I was lucky to trap an opponents
arm and lock in a rear choke.

Back to gym Tuesday, back to 100% healthy eating this evening.

Next goal...forget about maintaining 159, time to go for 158.

Tuesday here....

There is some nervous anticipation this morning....hard to tell on my home scale if I am 159 or 160.

During a busy day at home yesterday afternoon and evening, my potato chip defenses were down and I indulged. And if I eat chips in the afternoon, I will end up eating junk food breakfast cereal before bed. Obviously not a good idea!!

So by all rights I totally deserve to snap back up to 160.

Today I will be going to the gym at lunch time....they have a nice accurate scale there. Hoping for 159!!!!!

Monday afternoon update...

Good workout today...not great, but good. Still a little sore from Saturday's BJJ training.

Used the gym scale...and of course with my luck, it was only in kilograms....I think it said 71.5 kg, which would be 157 lbs. Hope that's right!

Tomorrow AM on my home scale will be an interesting weigh in.

Just got my next boost of motivation:

2011 Bravado Open tournament, in September. Going to drop a weight class vs. where I was in the tournament in May. Which means I need to be around 148 lbs.

If today's weight was accurate, that means I need to go down 9 lbs, between now and September. That will be do-able but not easy. I am starting to put on muscle now, as I am weight lifting 3-4 days a week.

In any case, this is what I can push for!!!

Ok quick update for today...

pretty sure I weight it at/around 159 lbs this morning. Thats good. I know I will fluctuate here/there...as long as I stay under 160 I am happy.

Next goal: solid 158!!!

PS I think there is a tournament on July 8th....will now try to get down to 149-150 for that.....16 days....probably not possible but it will be fun trying!

Hi all

Well the scale at home definitely said 158 lbs this morning...that is good news.

Had an OK training session yesterday, but it was more instructional vs. open mat grappling. I did grapple with one of the best at the club...he is very strong and knows his game. He ate me alive.

Always a good idea to face your toughest competition.

Next: 157!
