are you a Trainer? list which gym you work at.

list the gym(s) you've trained and how long you've been an official trainer.

my first and only gym - Bally Total Fitness; official trainer for 11 months now.

Gold's Gym has been really good to me. I recommend working there to anyone looking to get going as a personal trainer.

Honestly never worked in a gym (did a gym clinical in Exercise Physiology)

I work for myself, and love it...

Did you take the class as a 5-6000 level class? Although we spent a fair bit of time in the lab running tests on each other in the ex phys class, I don't think we ever stepped foot in the gym.

Clinical was a requirement of my major, though most of us ended up at different hopitals and helping Physical Therapists... I am so glad I went where I did!

Been a personal trainer for 20 years. Started my first business (JP Fitness) 14 years ago, and never looked back. Don't even know if I'm employable anymore, although I do put in my fair share of 14 hour days!

I think I want to do that when I get older. Always wanted to open up my own gym.

Still trying to get hired

I work full-time as a classroom teacher, but I did earn my personal trainer certification from Scirion Institute in Feb of 2006. Unfortunately, 24-Hour and Fitness 19 do not recognize Scirion as national certification. $800 later and having studied my heart out to pass the exam, and it looks like I need to pay hundreds more to be accepted as a "certified" trainer.

The problem that you'll have these days is politics is a major part of our industry when it used to not be. 24 hour fitness is a complete embarrassment to our industry and you really should not be trying to work there. Have you seen the people that work there? You're looking for work in places where there is no work. If you have a scirion cert, go some place where you can make real money or start your own business and do in home or corporate training.

This can also be said about certain Golds Gyms as well.

I was going to go work for Scirion as a testing proctor and teaching their exercise classes to perspective personal trainers. However, their good intentions for the industry didn't do much since none of the gyms recognize them here and so there was no potential to make money. On the bright side, they would've given me their personal training certification since I work for them...which of course goes back to about useless here.

However, also being a full-time classroom teacher allows me to coach which pays quite a bit more than I would've made doing what Scirion wanted me to do.

Great article and it is unfortunately the way it is now. Personal training is about money now. In the old days, it was about true fitness people getting involved in a job to spread their knowledge and help others. If the money came... great. If it didn't, we got a second job. Those days are long gone and the industry has suffered because of it. Scirion is a great company with real exams but In some places even that doesn't matter. It's all screwed up!

Not recognizing a cert isn’t an issue. The gyms are not afraid of new programs and so it shouldn’t really matter. I think the issue is (as described in the article) what are they going to learn about the cert program once they research it. The expertrating program is easy and anybody can get their cert. The scirion program on the other hand is extremely hard and it’s not cheap to get. I would be proud to have someone investigate my scirion cert but I would be ashamed to have them look up my expertrating cert. I think that is the real issue with these programs.
