Are protein drinks really necessary?

I believe I intake a fair amount of protein. I've started eating eggs after I work out (not raw) and eating a bowl of raisin bran every chance I get.

The thing is, protein supplements are expensive, and at the gym I very rarely see people using them. Does it make a huge difference, and is it essential in serious body building?

you should really try and get all of your protien from food.
protien supplements are good when you dont have alot of time to prepare food, and havent ate properly that day.

exactly, you dont need them. its just protein in a powder, nothing special about it despite what the ads say.

but when in a bind, can come in handy

I almost beg to differ from the other post. These days you can by 5 pounds of whey protein for about $25.00 US. That is 90 servings worth and when you break it down is equal to .28 cents a serving.

The usual amount of protein in each serving is 22 grams so lets double that which would be equal to about a 1/2 breat of chicken or a can of tuna.

Now your talking:

$.56 for Whey Protein
$ 1.00 for 1 can of Tuna
$ $2.00 for 1/2 lb. of chicken

Plus becuase whey has the highest BV of all 3 ("BV" is an indicator of the quality of the protein, it is a measure of a protein's ability to be used by the body) it would only make clear cents :) to use Whey Protein as a supplement within 2 hours of a workout.

when you are done working out, your body is craving protein and carbs. carbs are easy to come by and enter your system rapidly, especially if you take them in a liquid. most proteins are a bit more difficult to get into your system immediately. whey protein, however, acts very rapidly. i think that whey protein is an important suppliment. also, as its been said, its not extremely expensive...i got 5lb for $20 US.

you get used to it...i use bargain whey and its not so bad. GNC is a little better but costs more. one thing that helps me with the taste: i drink it warm. i dont know why, i just like it better that way...

remember, he asked if they were totally necessary. which of course they're not. whey protein powder has only been available as a supplement for roughly 10 years and plenty of ppl did fine before the 1990's.

I purchased some today. I drank it while I worked out (more or less after every set or few), that is ok right? Also, I know muscle building never takes immediate effect, but will I actually notice after a few weeks? or will it just make the process slightly less gradual.

.....and god, it tastes awful.

what brands are you guys using?

with so many products out there, you shouldnt have to suffer with one that doesnt taste good. i've used eas simply whey and ON's whey. but taste good to me.

Well, I mixed it with water, so I think I'll try it with milk next time.

Question: what is better, drinking it before, during, or after a workout? I drink it during.

I used ON's whey before, now I use GNC w/ skim milk, I love both.
I weigh 225 lbs so protien shakes really help me get the extra protien I need everyday. (225 grams)

does the time you drink your protein shake matter after a workout?

For example, will it make a difference if I drink the shake right after my workout, or about 10-20 minutes later? Im not sure how quickly the body acts.

I personally use Optimum chocolate powder, and usually mix about 1 ounce of it with 1/2 a cup of chocolate fat free frozen yogurt and about a cup of skim milk. It equates to around 30-35 grams of protein and seems work pretty well when I just have a few minutes.

A personal trainer responded earlier saying if you take in protein within 2 hours from your workout, that should be good enough. I know some pepole use berry flavored protein powders. I was just wondering, for people who do this, what type of juice do you like using this with? Any input is appreciated...
