are cable exercises more for toning? or gaining?or both

just wondern...
are cable exercises better for toning muscles ?
are they good for gaining muscle?
for both?

just want to know if i should add them to my exercises ... im trying to gain at the moment.

I use cable machines when I change my workout routine. I use them for gaining muscle. I like cable rows in place of dumbell rows. I find free weights produce more results than cable machines but you must change your routine every month so you have little choice but to use cables at some point.

I use the bowflex and I have been getting alot of complements on my body lately. I think that if a machine is going to give you hard core resistance than you are bound to gain some muscle ( if your eating right.) I haven't used free weights in a long long time. I do agree with the last post though it's nice having an option free weights/ machine. I want to get into the YMCA and see if there is a big difference from free weights-bowflex. also if your not using free weights correctly than your going to risk hurting yourself. I haven't had that problem with injuries using the bowflex
 
i just read something in men's health. it says cables are a great way to work your muscles because they put the muscle under constant stress. i will reread the article to see what else they said.
