Hello All!

Now that I have your attention... Lol

I am on a journey to lose 30 - 40 pounds this summer. Over the.course of my Navy career and the 8 years since I retired, I have gone from 165 to 218. According to the BMI charts, this makes me borderline obese. I am not sure I agree with that, but everyday activities should not leave me winded. Lol, I want to be able to tie my shoes without grunting or straining.
Don't want to get back to 165 again, but 185 - 190 would be great. (I am 6' 1" tall)
FEEL FREE TO CHALLENGE ME! Hold me accountable, I'm good with that.
Anything I can do to be helpful to someone here, ask.

Welcome to the forum.

I am sure that the navy will have ensured that you embraced exercise when you joined up... Have you remained active - or is this something that you put to one side as your career progressed?

What are your dietary and exercise plans for shedding these surplus pounds?

If you havent any firm plans as yet a good start would probably be
- drink 109 ounces of water every day
- walk 10,000 steps a day
- cut out junk food / takeaways
- eat lots of fruit and veg and lean protein

I suggest that you read the following thread - it may help you settle in and make friends

Good luck with your project.

Thank You! I have cut back quite a bit on meat, eating far more veggies and fruit than before, and have been walking daily after work. So far I am doing anywhere from 3 to 6 miles a day at a fairly good pace. I am drinking lot of water, (although I do use Mio for flavoring) and, (this is the hard part for me) I have eliminated snacks after dinner. i LOVE snacking in the evenings, and often did not realize how much I was taking in. I got a desk job coming out of the Navy, and the inactivity during the day has been a killer for my fitness. Thanks for the link!

You will see people around the forum knocking the idea of adding stuff to your water - but the main thing is getting the right quantity of liquid into you so that your kidneys and liver get the chance to work right. I think that the important thing is being comfortable with the amount of calories that you add to the water... some things add negligible calories... after that it is down to with whether you are ok with the additives in there... I say - keep up the good work with the water and feel good about it... It sounds like you are doing pretty well...

You know only too well what you need to do about the inactivity... Become more active!!! Once those endorphins get triggered you might actually enjoy exercising too...

I use Mio as well and it hasn't negatively affected my health loss plan. It says right on the label is has no nutritional value whatsoever (0 all across the board including calories). And it's great to use when you're sick of drinking just plain bottled/tap water (I've found I have to add it to my fridge water, even though it's filtered, it makes me sick to my stomach). Just watch out for the energy Mio flavors, they can leave you crashing if you aren't careful--even one bottle with the energy flavoring has me shaky about two hours later if I don't eat something.

It sounds like you've got a good start on walking and your food changes. I have a Bowflex and stationary bike along with a gym membership right now and out of all those, the bike is the one I use the most. For me, it helps having something right at home that I can use for exercise when I can't make it to the gym or the weather is bad.

As for food, look around on these forums. Many people have posted up what they eat and I've found a lot of tips for that when it comes to substitution and better sources of nutrients.

Also, if you're into the tech goodies out there, I'd recommend Fitbit rather than Jawbone. Jawbone's mobile app is way more complicated than Fitbit's and leads to wasted time logging stuff when all it takes is a few touches for Fitbit's. The thought of counting calories always discouraged me, but this app and website I've found makes it much easier and I know how much I've eaten at a glance. I currently have the Aria weight scale and Zip, while my husband has a One. The Flex should be coming out soon as well.
