Anyone here a smoker?

I have in the past, but what I'm wondering is about asthma...

Does anyone know if you burn more calories when you can't breathe and are wheezing as compared to when you're breathing normally? It would be interesting to find out.

ill bet u do

ill bet u prob do burn more calories if u smoke however u cant go anywhere near as long as u could normally, so in the long run u burn more calories if u didnt smoke.

however, alyspeach, if u really want u can do ur aerobics with only a bendy straw to breath thru, seeing as how thats what it feels like to have enphezima (sp).

i didnt say I smoke....I was asking if someone burns more calories when they can't breathe cause they are having an asthma attack rather than when they are breathing normally...

I think maybe we're getting off topic, but I've got asthma and I don't think you'd burn more calories. The working out itself doesn't bring on my attacks, but if I'm having difficulty breathing when I start working out, I just can't finish. So based simply on the fact that you can't last, I would say no. But I see what you're saying, if you're struggling to breathe, does it burn more calories in the same time frame. You're more fighting to breathe than anything else. Also, to follow up on that same topic, I wonder if lack of oxygen intake (due say to asthma) could actually inhibit burning calories?

I'll answer underfooters original question.

I smoke, I feel better after I workout, but I am sure my workouts would be better if I didn't smoke.
I find that if I don't smoke for a few hours before a workout, my chest will burn all through the workout. (Withdrawal)
If I smoke a ciggarette just before the workout then this can usually be avoided but as I said, the smoking definitely effects my workout.
I wish I had the will to stop, but for now I enjoy smoking too much...

yes, that's what I meant...like if I'm just sitting here on the net as I am now and I'm having an attack (need my inhaler), do I burn more or less calories than just sitting here breathing normally....???

I smoke and my spot doesnt, i know we do the same amount of workout time and weights, i also know that i work a damn site harder then he does......as far as i am aware no you dont burn anymore calories because of the type of respiration, its all respective to the amount you do. smoking staunches your apetite which is why most smokers are slim, But i totally Allon, bust my arse evertime i work out and i feel lightheaded and tight chested after each time. the harder i work the more i suffer for it afterward. Although i am glad i work out as i would hate to think of the position i'd be in if i didnt. I am a fairly fit person even though i smoke, although i have to work hard to be fit. I am one of those people that believe you dont have to be a complete fitness fanatic to be fit, i still eat maccie D's and smoke and drink, but it would be alot easier on my body if i didnt. Again its respective to the effort your willing to put into the matter.
