Anyone else work out like I do....

I've seen a lot of your routines here, and I realized how different I do things.

For one, I don't have a routine. At all. I go everyday, and I'll switch it up between biceps, shoulders, triceps, legs, cardio, and chest respectively. But I don't have an actual routine.

For example, on my chest/tricep day, I literally choose what 4 chest excercises I will do based on how I feel. What I do, and the order I do it, depends usually on what I did last time, who I'm with (if I have a spotter) and sometimes what isn't taken. Then I'll move on and do any 3 to 5 random tricep, and so on. I also like to learn new methods and become experienced on them as much as possible.

Anyone else go by this method? It is said your routine should be changed every month or so, but my routine changes constantly. I can't even think of how I'd change it because within 2-3 weeks I've done mostly everything. It is easier for me this way, because I can mend how I work out to who I decide to work out with, and how I feel. So far, I havn't slowed down in my building (like they say you do with a strict routine change).

I have known a few people who train the way you mentioned, but they didn't last very long with consistant training. I schedule a free day on Friday only. Generally I practice Oly lifts or new exercises I've read about. Other than Friday I have to stay on a strict format or I'll get lazy.

If I were to train by "feel" I'd feel tired after about 30 minutes and go home. But if I write a routine in a log prior to entering the gym I will do the entire program and not think twice about it. I also use the log to record weight, reps, sets and other notes. Then I use that to gage my progress from week to week. I am in the process of dialing in my nutritional needs, so recording everything is important to me to figure out what type of macro nutrients work best for me.

I'm interested to know how many others train by the "how I feel" method and if consistency with training is a problem.

Happy Training,
DM

TRAIN WITH NO ROUTINE??!!!

AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

seriously, man i could never do that. i do think its cool to be able to do that but i need to have something to follow. :)

I train without a routine in the sense taht i have a list of tons of excercises, and i pick which one to do depending on what muscle isn't sore or hasn't been worked in a week. I keep chest and tris together. Other than that biceps, shoulders, back, and legs are a day of it's own. I just pick the excercises in the morning depending on if i haven't done it in a while or if i want to try something new (oh yeah, and if i have a spotter). I believe excercise is a lot of experimentation.

Oh yeah, i forgot to add, i run and do abs everyday. I stick to a certain excercise for a couple weeks til i get bored with it or find something cooler.

I can't stick to a routine either...
Since I have two hours to kill (thats how long the daycare at the gym lasts in the morning), I can always get in 40 min of cardo...but its different as to which one or how long on each. For instance, Yesterday it was 20min on bike and 20 on tread. No waiting cause the gym is pretty empty. Every day core (abs, side, back) again exercises vary but one of each. One day upper body, next lower. Every couple of weeks I'll even reverse that (weights then cardio). So far so good, nothing has been damage, sprained etc. and I've been doing it like this for the last two yrs.

I just know what machines work what, and go by that.

I will walk in with the memorized routine that I will do 4 tricep excercises. I know of a possible maybe 10-12 different useful tricep excercises, and choose which ones based on that.

I do hypertrophy with all of my exercisess on sunday, tuesday and thursday and i run on monday, wensday and friday so suterday is free!!!

I basically do the same as you underfooter. I know the muscles I need to work and the excercises that will work good for me. After every workout I run 1 mile (it's been helping with the six pack)

Once school starts again in the fall i will go back to my home workout and things will fall back into routine and I will be challenged to keep things fresh.
