Always hungry!!

They also have professional moderators on that site. [...]

I am a bit surprised at how involved and "personal" the mods on this board are. Guess things are very different here, but my "horsey" board is also made up of industry professionals who have to worry about how online persona affect their professional lives.
Mods on this board are not paid or solicited. We all volunteer our time. We all put in several hours a week (or more) answering questions, welcoming new members, watching for (and deleting) spam, and making sure the board runs smoothly. We do this because we care about the integrity of this place.

That doesn't mean that we don't also participate here as PEOPLE. We are also people who have lost/are losing weight. We are also human beings. We are also part of the community.

I've spent about 6 months here as a mod and in that time I've been cursed at, yelled at, been called names, sent hate email, had people give me negative reputation for removing spam and enforcing the rules of the board (rules I didn't set - but that were set by the owner), accused of being a dictator, now accused of having a "Christ complex", accused of all kinds of hateful things. I put hours each week into this site. I spend time cleaning up spam, posting welcomes, giving advice, providing links ... and this is the type of thanks I get ... some newbie who joined 15 days ago telling me that I've never been helpful or encouraging.

Yeah, I'm pissed off about it. I'm angry. I'm hurt. I'm frustrated. I put a fuckload of work into this site for no other reason than that I CARE ... and this is the thanks I get.

If any of you think you can do it better, then YOU send an email to the admin and ask to be a moderator. YOU put in the hours of work each week to make this site run smoothly. You put in the time to make sbure that the information provided is accurate and helpful and not full of lies and rumors. Obviously all of you can do it so much better than the rest of us.

For me the urge to eat has always come when bored. It's not hunger at all but just a steady urge to go pick up food and not manifested by any signs of actual hunger. Such as stomach growling etc. I concede that I could have thought of it as hunger along the way but know better now.

Evenings historically have always been the time that was the worst for this for me as I was always a before bed binge eater my entire life. Actually as I am typing this right now I have the urge for sweets. It astonishes me how I seem to have so much more willpower during the day. I just visited some friends this afternoon and turned down ice cream and hot chocolate without even thinking twice about it, but now just a few hours later I am bored and have some time on my hands and I am feeling like a big slice of cake would be great.

Luckily I subscribe to the belief of out of sight out of mind so I avoid keeping things like that in the house, makes it much easier.

I find keeping the mind active on a task helps for myself. They say idle hands are the devils playground right? I have taken up reading as a new hobby as I don't spend a lot of time playing games anymore. For what it's worth, keeping busy or otherwise occupied mentally is something to try that is effective for me as far as avoiding the compulsion to eat. Voicing it helps as well. For example posting this here right now has occupied my mind long enough to help ignore that urge and think about it more logically.

I am kind of saddened though by this. That even after near a year that I have been doing this I still have that compulsion buried in my psyche, that I will probably have to force myself to suppress that for the rest of my life. I don't feel doubt that I can do it, just more of disappointing realization. I really do hope those predispositions to old habits go away one day after replacing them with new habits like exercise and self control for long enough. I wonder often if it is comparable to being an alcoholic or drug addict, if it's a life long thing that just pops up after years of being clean so to speak. Only time will tell I guess.

Poor Cap85, if your still around. LoL

Maybe you could share some things you are eating on a regular basis and we can help recommend some foods that might be more filling. If the foods your eating are more energy dense vs. nutrient dense, you have to eat a lot more to feel full.

Most veggies are the best examples of nutrient dense foods.

So, what are you eating? :)

First of all, everybody needs to relax. Owning people on this forum is my job. And, I'm damn good at it, so everybody needs to take a step back and chill for a minute.

Secondly, moderators are people too. They're not intricately engineered computer programs who "bleep" and "bloop" at forum members all day with robotic-like responses. They are human beings with human emotions that express their feelings, thoughts, opinions and knowledge with words.

Moderators aren't here to put a leash on you and walk you through life, step by step, quietly picking up your shit as you leave it behind you. They are here to...

1) Rid the forum of spam
2) Enforce board rules
3) Resolve problems as they are addressed
4) Help members and give advice in regards to weight loss related issues

Moderators aren't here to hand everybody gum drop kisses and rainbow lollipops and then send them on a magical unicorn ride through fluffy marshmallow clouds; they are here to help you. I don't know what unrealistic, bullshit candy coated world that some of you people seem to be living in, but, sometimes, the best way to help somebody is to put them in their place. Sometimes, it's actually harmful to sugar coat things, because then people are going to continue living life in a fantasy world, where they will feel free to make as many mistakes as possible...because nothing bad can happen to me in Candy Land, right?

Mayor Milkshake might say that you're safe, but Mother Earth takes undeniably honest shits on Candy Land and coats it's child-like fantasy of a world in a disgustingly truthful dosage of reality.

Life isn't a bowl of cherries; it's a bowl of shit. If you can't handle the smell, then leave.

Last, but certainly not least...

I'M HEERRREE!! lol :)

Ok, well Thank You to everyone who gave me a little advice! I will certainly take everything into consideration.

KayShiz- Here's my eating plan (varies throughout the week, but this is the jist)

Breakfast:
Bowl of Shredded Wheat Cereal, skim milk, lots of fruit or
(sometimes its Cherrios, oatmeal, eggs and toast....but still have milk, fruit etc.)

Snack:
Fruit, Nature Valley Granola Bar (or Lara Bar..I love em!) or
Fruit, cottage cheese or Apple, peanut butter or
Some kind of fruit with a little something else...

Lunch: Somtimes a turkey, swiss, lttle mayo, tomatoe, lettuce sandwhich, wheat bread, yogart with a little something added (ex: Chobani, Stoneyfield, Fage), Fruit or
Sometimes it's grilled chicken, veggies (squash, zucchini etc.) , rice or mc n cheese
Or anything I have maybe some leftovers of (but its almost always healthy)

Snack:
Maybe another yogart or nuts, or nut mix... but always another piece of fruit

Dinner: My boyfriend and I always cook, soooo....
Grilled chicken, sometimes breaded chicken (we make it ourselves) or
Hamburgers (lean meat)
Pork
Pizza (we make it ourselves, except when we're lazy and order it!)
Fajitas

And all of our dinners have included a starch, and veggies
(ex. sweet potatoes, squash, rice, asparagus, green beans, broccoli, velveeta mac n cheese, noodles, etc.)

And, I usually dont eat dessert unless I'm still a little hungry- but it's always sensible. Maybe some ice cream or chocolate pudding. Most of the time I dont even need or want it.

Was that ok? lol I hope I didnt give TMI haha...ok, well lemme know what ya think!
Oh, and I'ma girl...I think someone thought I was a dude up there^ :)
And, no, I dont drink soda. Not diet, not regular. I just stay away from it altogether. I drink water ALL day, sometimes some grapefruit juice for breakfast and sometimes sweet tea when I go out to dinner.

And to my original post, I think I'm doing better and better. I mean, sometimes I still feel hungry after dinner but I think by slightly reducing my portions, my stomach has shrinked a tiny bit because I'm feeling slightly more full faster! Do you think that's what could be happening? Because I've been trying to stop and not go back for seconds and I think my stomach is getting used to that. If I do go for seconds (and its only at dinner) I usually only get a little bit.

Sorry I type so much- lemme know what ya think! Thanks everyone!! :)

Stomachs don't shrink but your appetite likely has.

As far as what you are eating, it's fine. You can eat anything. Really. You can. The problem is what you mentioned. Portion control. Moderation. Calorie intake.

Eat slowly. It takes about 20 minutes or so for your stomach to signal to the brain that you are full. that should help curb some of your after dinner hunger.

Thanks "mods"

This clearly is not the forum board for me! No I do not think I could so free moderating better. I would never do free moderating. I get paid for my time and have a very busy life.

Also what medical training do these mods have to be doling out medical advice?

Any way, not the place for me! Have fin bickering kiddos. I am unsubscribing.

I didn't know he was a mod so why does it matter to him if we work for free?

And as far as advice, you will notice that most of us links medical case studies and scienticic proof for our statements. However, in no way, shape, or form do we say we are doctors or anything else.

sorry you feel that way, your 5 posts will be missed.

I just wanna see where this poor person got any help from inbetween all the arguing, back and forth. I just know if someone jumped in here and made a thread that i made and had important questions in about themselves. Id be highly peeved.

Derby,
This is still an internet forum. People can post whatever views they want and they can debate it. That's fine. We are not going to delete people's posts if they disagree. When you start a thread here or when you reply, anyone and everyone can post in response.

I know I know, but like if im really reaching out for help somewhere regardless of where im at internet or in a room full of people if i reach out asking for a question, and that question may be answered briefly and then a whole argument is laid out and i never got my full answer, and a right answer because there was bickering. and the important part of what this forum is all about has been forgotten and thats helping people...well in my opinion atleast..

Well, you are right. They are reaching out to a room of people for advice or help.

And when you do that, you get multiple answers. Add to it that this is an internet forum where you don't have to say things to a person's face, there is more of a tendancy to be aggressive rather than show facts.

while this forum is about support, it's also about knowledge and advice. Funny thing is, Kara was right with what she said. Actually, I've rarely seen her wrong with her information.

If you come here expecting no arguements or bickering, you are in the wrong place. Sign off the internet and look for another place for information. I'm sorry but that is the nature of the beast. I welcome the fighting as long as it is kept in bounds. The personal attacks have no place here.

Wow, you must be busy. EDIT: Let's not get into nitpicking over forum spelling ok?

I've read through a lot of forums in my day and, in all honesty, this is one of the few where advice is often paired with links to support said advice. Most people, especially moderators, feel as if members should just be taking their word for it, believing that everything they say is an undeniable fact...but the moderators on this forum (and a lot of members as well) actually support their advice by providing links or even reading material suggestions, such as books or articles.

So, obviously that person was right. You moderators shouldn't be giving advice to people, especially on medical issues, because you're not licensed medical professionals. But, you're also not licensed moderating professionals either sooooo...sorry...hand over your moderator badge; the show's over.

Assumptions and terribly inaccurate analyzations from newbies are always good for a laugh.

I just wanna see where this poor person got any help from inbetween all the arguing, back and forth. I just know if someone jumped in here and made a thread that i made and had important questions in about themselves. Id be highly peeved.

You do realize that your post just contributes to the thing you just griped about, don't you? HAHAHAHA, irony...you gotta love it.

How fast do you eat? Do you sit down and finish an entire meal in 10 minutes or do you take your time and eat slowly?

Personally, if I eat fast, I don't get full. It takes time for your brain to realize that your stomach is full, so if you clean your plate rather quickly, you might still be hungry, as your brain hasn't registered the "I'm full" feeling yet. And, that could be one of the reasons why you feel as if you're ALWAYS hungry.

So, if you do eat with a quickened pace, try slowing it down a little. One tip that I was told about a long time ago - a trick that works for me - is to set your fork down on the table after every single bite of food you take. That way, you're not consistently shoveling food into your mouth and stuffing your face. Setting your fork down will help you slow your pace and eat at a more reasonable speed. Also, try taking a very tiny sip of water inbetween each bite of food. That's another thing that will help you slow your eating pace down - of course, this is all being said under the assumption that you eat rapidly.

That actually looks really good and thought out Cap. I agree with what has been said all ready about taking longer to eat. The only thing I might add is switching some of your snacks (it sounded like that might be when you feel the hungriest) with some snack with more fiber and/or things that take longer to eat, maybe even some more veggies.

Baby Carrots or other cut up veggies, maybe a cup or two of air popped popcorn, or even fruits with higher fiber (apples, pears, berries,...) if the fruit your eating is more low fiber.

I think you are doing fantastic, plus the longer you stick with it the less hungry you will probably be.
