Almost in Despair

I weigh 434 lbs. I'm slowing creeping my way up to the mega-obese category and I'm terrified. I don't know how to stop this. I don't know how to start changing my life. I don't know anything. I have hypertension. I'm pre-diabetic. I have swelling in my legs that causes chronic pain and at times it is excruciating which limits my ability to exercise.

I'm 46. I'm tired. I've been crying for days now. I have no clue where or how to start. I found this site and am going to give it my best effort.

Thank you so much. I plan on doing a lot of reading here before I ask any questions. I think that's the smarter move and it won't irritate anyone to have to answer the same question ten thousand times. :p

Ask as many questions as you need to! Im new here too. Sometimes its tricky to navigate to the right information if you arent used to forums. Be encourged. Maybe start by getting a journal.. Track all your food intake and anything related to it. It truly helps.

Once again, thank you. I need a lot of help and I'm going to read everything I can get my hands on.

Congratulations and I wish you all of the success in the world! Please stick around! Everyone here has amazing input and can really help you!

Start making healthy choices and don't cut your calories so much that you're miserable! Healthy weight loss is about 1-3 pounds per week!

You can do this! I've found that the most motivating thing is to track your calories in something like fitday.com. Start an account and write down EVERYTHING you eat and drink. It's a little time consuming at first, but it becomes part of your life!

If you do a google search for BMR, you can find out how many calories your body burns on a daily basis. Shoot for a few hundred calories less than this number and you'll be on the road to success!!

Let me know if you have any questions! I love to help others, even though I'm fairly new to the forum as well!

Thank you so much for the good advice. Congrats to you too! :) I'm starting see a little light at the end of the tunnel and it was a deep dark looooong tunnel. :p

I'm so proud of you for making the decision to better your life! Once you start monitoring your food you can find out how much protein, carbs and fat you get in a day, as well as whether or not you are getting enough nutrients for you body.

After a month or so of doing this, you will be a pro! What does a normal day for you look like? Do you work? I know you said the exercises you can do are limited, but what can you do?

Anything is always better than nothing!

I'm behind you 100% on this!

I also want to suggest that you make miniature goals for yourself. Start with smaller goal and try to get down to 420 by the end of May.

It's not a huge goal, but it's do-able! When you get there before your dead-line, set a new goal for yourself, until you reach your goal weight.

I work during the day and take care of my folks at night. My mom is terminal and dad has Alzheimers. My nights are full. Walking is quite painful. I'm looking into getting a set of pedals that I can use as an exercise bike. Anything to get my legs going. My options are so limited. In fact, even my doctor is hesitant about letting me exercise. He thinks I should do bypass surgery. I'm not considering that as one of my options. I've never had surgery and the idea really worries me.

umm... no insult meant but... people like you and your "special" diets are what got me into this mess in the first place. I'm sure you mean well and want the best for me.. at least I HOPE that's your motivation, but, I really don't need any false hope at this point in my life.

Hello Nahaschiid,

this is no false hope, as I am into this program as well. And I am not trying to promote any programs, I have tried it and it works and wanted to help you as well.

I wish you all the Best !

Thanks but quit replying to my threads, please. I don't want or need your input. I tried being nice. You have nothing to offer me. Have a nice day. :)

hey nahaschild,
first and foremost i totally agree with you, that neel character is spewing alot of spam all over the place with some 'miracle' weight loss plan. i myself learned long ago there is no such thing.

anyway, getting back to business, i just wanted to welcome you to the forum...everyone on here is very encouraging (except the spammers lol!). i just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in this, and just joining this forum is a big step because it shows you really want to make a change. i'm 5feet and now at 340pounds, i've lost about 10pounds ever since i bought myself a weighing scale about 2 weeks ago and i'm almost certain i was in the range of about 370pounds when i started my weight loss programme 3 months ago. I started by eating healthy first and i'm now on week 7 of exercise.

as i tell everyone, it won't be easy but whats important is if you fall, try again and again untill you've gotten to a weight your finally happy with. I'm only at the beginning of my journey and have given myself between one and a half to two years to go down to a healthy weight. but since it's taken me 28yrs to put on all this weight, then sacrificing just one or two years to gain my life back is much more important.

i think your idea of starting with a bike sounds good because if i read correct you mentioned you have pain from walking. as much as i may want to cycle i can't because it hurts my butt to fit on the tiny seat, but i've read numerous places that there are now wide-seats available for bikes so it shouldn't be a hinderance. Another good activity would be swimming since it's got no impact on the knees...but of course it means you'd have to have access to a private pool. For me i find it really sad because i think the only sport i've ever really enjoyed was swimming, but that's when i was young....i soon got too self-concious and haven't stepped in a pool for like 6yrs....because i'm terrified of being seen in public in a costume and don't have access to a private pool.

But i guess what i'm saying is, if you don't feel comfortable doing one form of exercise, find something else that works for you. There's lots of useful info available on the forum and many encouraging people so your definitely in the right place.

for me, since i still have such a long way to go, it'll take a while before i start noticing major changes....but the thing is this, i take notice of the little changes that mean the world to me. For example just 3 months ago before i started health eating/exercising, i'd get some really bad headaches that would last 2-3days every single week, i used to live on pain killers. I hadn't been to see a doctor in years because i was too scared of what i'd be told, but a few years back my blood pressure was measured and it was on the high side, and i'm pretty sure those headaches were related to it, coupled with being extremely tired all day (so i'd sleep ALOT), and i'd also have swollen ankles, other things were like i'd break out into a sweat and huff and puff when i'd climb like 5 stairs or walk for even like 2 minutes. But all of these things have gone completely! I keep saying it's my little miracle....the things that i know and notice that no one else would. And after some time passes i'll then start to notice bigger changes. These are the things that keep me going on everyday. Sure there'll be good days and there'll be bad days. But when you have bad days, pick yourself up and try again and again!

i'm so sorry to have rambled on and on....i guess i just wanted to let you know that you're not alone in this and also to say welcome to the forum and want to wish you all the best with your weight loss journey xoxo

You and me both! Not only is there no such thing but it can cause a boomerang effect that causes GREATER weight gain. No thanks.

I definitely need to change. My life depends on it. I would give my left arm to be 370 right now. :p 434 is a lot of baggage to carry around. I think it's a really good idea for me to cut calories first and then work on the exercise when I can move a little better.

I'm 46 and I'm well on my way to becoming bed bound. I don't want to die in my bed and have to lifted out with a crane. The thought of that terrifies me. That's my motivation.

Thanks for all the wonderful support. I definitely need it. :D

congrad and welcome. You've made the first step to getting back in control. This is a forum full of wonderful people that will gladly help with any questions so don't sweat it. If you have any diet questions just let us know. I would seriously try to loose the weight natually before i go under the knife but I'm not going to knock the bypass. because I have a dear friend that did it and has had wonderful results. Be warned, it's a serious surgery and one of the hardest recoveries you will ever undergo. I wish you all the best and look forward to seeing the after pics you will be posting. Take care dear!

I think that would be a great start, any little differences you start making will be very beneficial. there's lots of info on here about where to begin with exercise and also lots on nutrition. At the end of the day you know whats good for you and what's bad for you....so starting by cutting calories sounds pretty good. I also started by eating healthy for about 2 months then after i got some courage joined a gym and now i'm on week 7 of exercise and have never looked back. My weight has always bothered me big time, but the past year and a half or so i was in a semi-depressive state. I ate like a TRASH CAN, i'm talking pizza or chinese at least 5 times a week a WHOLE lot of chocolate, cakes, icecream etc....if i were to list the crap i was eating per day it would be down right embarassing. i also started sleeping ALOT and got really bad sleeping habits like sleeping at 6am and waking up at like 3pm...it's a whole story altogether. The 2 things i knew how to do well were eat, sleep and watch LOTS AND LOTS of movies/series's.

But i think everyone in there life has that one point when they decide the time has come to make a change, and i thank God it happened for me because i was well on my way to my death bed. But one day i just snapped and said no it can't go on. So started by eating healthy, cutting out all the crap and replacing with real food, whole food and raw food. I'd go WEEKS sometimes MONTHS without eating veges or fruit. Those days were really dark for me, so i'm glad i made the change. I mean, i still have a heck of a long way to go, but i'm just glad i'm on my way to a healthier lifestyle.

If you'd be at all interested there's a diary section where you can start your own diary and just input anything everyday, you can also read other peoples diaries (feel free to read mine...i say sheepishly as i feel i'm whoring myself out...lol!), but seriously though, when you read the diaries you begin to see read people's stories and the hardships they've been through that led to the weight gain and then also find out how they overcame it all and decided to live a healthier lifestyle and have lost like x amount of weight etc etc. it's all very motivational. There's also the club section in the forum, there's various clubs like the 300+ club for people weighing over 300pounds (which i'm in) and there you'll also begin to find people who weigh more than you and are also on the journey. As i said it's all very helpful because it lets you know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE! we're all here to support each other.

now i know i'm talking all tough like i've been perfect with my healthy eating/exercise but after some good weeks, just last week i slipped to my old ways and bought a whole lot of junk food and practically inhaled it all! But the difference for me this time round is that i woke up monday morning and said NO MORE and have since continued. So basically i have my good weeks and my bad weeks, but this time round i pick myself up and try again.

I've tried millions of diets before, but always did them half-heartedly mostly because at the time i was living under my mothers roof and hence her rules...lol! So during those diets at the dinner table i'd eat my 'diet' meal then later sneak into my room to feast on any goodies i'd bought. Which is why i say for everyone it's never too late. There comes a time when you decide enough is enough and decide to change. You maybe 16, 26, 36 or 46 yrs, it doesn't matter, it's never too late. Because efforts made now will let you live a longer happier life. so again i say, all the best YOU CAN DO THIS!

I'm 46 and I'm well on my way to becoming bed bound. I don't want to die in my bed and have to lifted out with a crane. The thought of that terrifies me. That's my motivation.

Thanks for all the wonderful support. I definitely need it. :D
