Alligatorob's Diary

According to the packages I buy 12 ounces (340 grams) of broccoli/cauliflower is 80 calories, 12 ounces of spinach is 120 calories, both frozen raw, pre-cooking.
I don't think it's possible to buy frozen raw veg around here; it's all blanched to avoid it losing color and getting slimy when thawed. Don't like frozen spinach but it does take up a lot less space in the fridge :D Either way processing changes the water content of course. In the app I use raw broccoli is 34 kcal/100g while raw spinach is 23kcal/100g.

It was a good day, I ate pretty well, exercised and am feeling good tonight. My first day back exercising and it felt good. I do think my break allowed my energy to recharge and for me to get over the worst of the stomach problems, now I am hoping I can stick to it a while. Though I may not push quite as hard.

I have never tried thawing frozen veggies except in the microwave cooking them. Just thawing they like would be slimy. The stores here sell lots of frozen fruit and vegetables, probably more than fresh, frozen cost less and store better. Interesting on the calorie thing, I think it shows how inaccurate a lot of the calorie counts we get can be. But I know of no better way to determine calories, and on average it probably works out ok. Except as you pointed out a while back on the low end, I suspect a lot of things are labeled as zero calorie that are not, and we tend to eat a lot of servings of the "zero" calories. I do anyway...

There´s actual research saying you´re not the only one: when people think they´ve had a low-cal snack or meal they´re likely to eat more later even if said snack or meal was not in fact low in calories. Like we reward ourselves for being virtuous.

Another good day. I ate well, exercised and feel good tonight. Did an hour and a half at the gym, less than some days but I got tired and left, it was fine. Today was leg day, it is always my hardest day.

I am probably guilty of that, calorie creep. I am always having to vigilant. On the low calorie thing I think about hot sauces, like Tabasco. It says zero calories, but I eat a lot more than a single serving, just one example where I probably am getting a few uncounted calories...
It's good to see you getting back into your exercise & regaining some energy
Thanks Cate, I am feeling better, still not back where I once was, but better is good, I am happy with it.

Better IS good. Good to hear you went home when the exercise stopped feeling good rather than burning yourself out.

A decent day, I ate well and exercised, and am feeling fine tonight. Only problem is I feel like I overate, I tracked my calories pretty closely so I know I didn't, but I still feel that way.

I am taking the exercising a bit easier, doing what feels right and not pushing too hard. I do think I may have been overdoing it before. One interesting thing is that I took 2 weeks off of the PT shoulder exercises and the shoulder seems to have much improved. Still feel a little pain, but a lot less. I have restarted some of the PT exercise, but just a bit, I'll see how it goes.
Better is definitely good!
Thanks Cate, it is good!

It'll be interesting to see if it's just the general rest that helped or the rest from specific exercises. Adding exercises (PT and other) back in slowly should help to figure that out.

A good day, I think I ate well, exercised and am feeling good tonight. I ate a few less calories than usual, reduced my sodium and artificial sweeteners and am hoping this will reverse my weight gain. We will see...

I suspect you are right, it was likely some specific exercise or exercises, but figuring out which is kind of hard. The pain usually doesn't arise right away, only until after a time. I am trying to figure it out.
It sounds like you are finding a balance Rob. Glad your shoulder is healing.
Thanks Cate, and I am working on trying to find a balance, guess I always will be, LOL!

It was a good day, I ate well, keeping to my new approach, and exercised. Tonight I feel good. My exercise was limited to a 30 min workout, but it was vigorous. I am hoping the lower sodium and carbs will help.
That's the thing about balance: you have to keep it, not just find it.
Thanks LaMa, I am not sure I have ever completely found it, but trying helps.

Yesterday was a good day, I ate well and exercised.

Did something different, ate a late lunch/early dinner and ended up a bit short on calories, so I decided I could have a whiskey. I had enough calorie deficit for 4 ounces (120 ml) so I carefully measured out the Tullamore DEW, my favorite. Sipped on it for about an hour and just could not drink it all. A new experience for me, I don't think I have ever left whiskey in a glass in my life! And 4 ounces isn't a whole lot, before my current diet there were times I could drink half a fifth (half liter) in a single evening. I think that would kill me today, more likely I would pass out well before it was gone. I guess the good thing is now I can drink the most expensive whiskey I want and still spend a lot less than I used to!

Yesterday ended up well enough, I ate well and exercised. However I "experimented" with the artificial sweeteners and my guts were not happy... Not so bad as before, but bad enough to learn my lesson. Will throw out what's left of them today... Had a Superbowl party for the family last night, so eating was a bit of a challenge, but in the end I did ok. I grew up just a few miles from Tampa, so was happy with the outcome.
120 ml is 6 shots around here
I looked it up and here it's "a standard whiskey pour is 1.5 ounces for shot, 2 ounces for a neat or rocks pour, and 3 ounces for a double ". In the end I drank about 3 ounces before giving up, so about a double or 2 US shots. However you are right I am half the size I used to be, even less flesh when you consider than my bones probably weigh about the same. So it is a lot more than it used to be... Kind of interesting I do miss my whiskey a little from time to time, but it sure is easier for me to give up than a food binge. Wish cheeseburgers were as simple to avoid...

30 ml is a full nip here. I'm glad your drinking capacity has lessened, Rob. A small whisky every now & then after a meal with protein shouldn't hurt too much I would have thought.

I was under the impression Utah state law declared a shot to be 1oz. It is 1.5 oz here by the way...

Today was not my best day. I went 112 calories above my target, not a big deal in and of itself, but it bothers me. The first 32 calories over was an honest mistake, I miscounted what I put into my evening snack. Not so trouble some as the handful of fritos I ate after that, after I knew I was over... It is probably my first day over 1800 calories in more than a year and a half. Thanks to my gym workout the myfitnesspal app tells me I was still in a small calorie deficit, so as I said the calories themselves were no big deal. I just fear the slippery slope, and this feels like a first tiny step down one...
Isn't it strange how different humans are?
Yes, I know that AA people tell alcoholics to eat candy or something when they crave liquor. And for some folks that probably makes sense.

Thanks Cate, and I agree an occasional whiskey is fine, its just been a while and this one might have been a bit much. I am sure I will have another, hopefully not so much next time.

I didn't know that, but it doesn't surprise me. Utah probably has the most restrictive alcohol rules and laws in the US. I almost never go to a bar here, so do my own measuring.
