Alligatorob's Diary

A good start to my new approach. I had no artificial sweeteners, and my gut feels a lot better. I ate about half the veggies I usually eat and less fruit, but still a lot. I also had more fat and a few more "normal" things, so it was good. No exercise, but I am working up to the idea.
If you're going to replace those calories, I'd look at very lean protein (fish/poultry) or perhaps some less fibrous starches.
I did today, ate more sardines and cheese than usual.
Hi, Rob. I'm sorry that you are a bit down. I felt the same way when I was at your stage & I know how weird it feels. Seeing a nutritionist might be a good idea to switch your focus & hopefully find a long-term healthy food plan.
Thanks Cate, I know you have been through something similar to I, and I appreciate your insights. Seeing a nutritionist may be a good idea, not sure where or how to make that connection, but I will give it some thought.
Rob, I just remembered that you stopped exercising this week and exercise has been shown to help relieve constipation (and improve mood). Are you snowed in or can you get out for a walk?
Thanks Err and yes I have been off the exercise. It started last week when I was suddenly feeling very weak, and I just have not gotten back to it. I had a gym appointment this morning, but canceled when I got the gut cramps. I will get back. Exercise does help, I know, but my constipation was as much a problem when I was exercising, or almost as much anyway, as it is now. So I know that will not cure. LaMa may have something with the fat, that is the one thing I have consistently done throughout dieting, cut way back on the fat. Maybe upping it a bit will help, I did today.

Careful with adding cheese, Rob. That really constipates me. Apples help though as do prunes( just a few). Maybe add some flaxseeds to your cereal in the morning. I have LSA, which is a mix of Linseed, Sunflower seed & Almond meal, which is best kept in the fridge. Are you still having kefir?

.... Maybe add some flaxseeds to your cereal in the morning. ...
i'll throw a tsp of flax or chia seeds in many things i make these days.

sometimes i worry about artificial sweeteners... something i don't really want to quit. even worse, i've settled on sodium saccharin (Sweet'n Low) which is one that gets a lot of &*#% from the Keto krowd. but then i read some studies and even when dangerous effects are indicated, they are using well over what i do.

I am constipated and have been intermittently for a long time, but only since starting this diet. I don't recall ever suffering from constipation or some of the other discomforts before going on this diet.
That is interesting...I could also see that adding to feeling a bit down about things. One doesn't expect to get constipated while adding in a bunch of fruits and veggies and healthy eating in general! Would be good if the eliminating of artificial sweeteners solved the issue. Anyways I hope you can figure it out. A good working gut system really helps to make a person feel a lot better.

Not a bad day, I stuck mostly to the no artificial sweeteners, then realized there was a little stevia in the chocolate additive I put into my evening yogurt, but not much. No diet soft drinks and no other artificial sweetener. I also got my fat up and stuck to my calorie limit. Belly not perfect but better.

I know cheese can have that effect, today I had cheese, but less. Trying to up it for the fat. The kefir has become homemade yogurt, same inoculum and recipe but incubated at a higher temp, 120 F. It tastes the same but is thicker and smoother. And according to what I read it converts more of the milk sugar to whatever it converts to, but not so as I can taste a difference.

Yes, thanks to you and Cate I did just that, just happened to have some flax seeds in the refrigerator so I added some both to breakfast and evening snack. They add an interesting texture and are a good source of fat. For me I am pretty sure the erythritol in the stevia I was eating was a problem, in fact if you look at the labels on most "stevia" sold in Walmart there is more erythritol than stevia in the product. Erythritol and other sugar alcohols often found in sweeteners are known problems for some people's digestion. However my most recent problem was not that, it likely came from too much of the stuff in the picture. Not sure what the problem was with this one. I really like the taste, but it is not nearly so powerful as advertise, probably takes 10X the advertised dose to taste properly. Anyway I have given it up. Beware this stuff!

I agree, it shouldn't happen but it is... I don't think the artificial sweeteners are the problem, the constipation happened long before I started overdoing the sweeteners... My working theory of the day is too little fat, so I upped my fat yesterday and today, no effect yet but it may be too soon to expect it. I did ask my doctor about it a few months back, he just said that it did not surprise him.

Looks like you're well within the recommended macro distribution ranges now, hopefully that'll alleviate the gut issues.

The portion size they mention probably has nothing to do with the sweetness but rather with the amount of calories. Pretty sure that in the US they're allowed to round down to 0 anything below 5 kcal so many diet products (like the "0 kcal" cooking sprays) will make their portion size just small enough to be allowed to advertise having no calories. So if you actually were using 10x what it says there it'd probably be close to 40 kcal.

I must remember the flax myself when needed :) Fresh cherries are doing the trick for now.
You sound a bit more cheerful, Rob. You’ll find a new focus I’m sure.

Still on the new track, and I think I am feeling better. Constipation not gone, but maybe less.

So far so good, we'll see. I did have the higher fat levels again today.

You are right about that LaMa, and I saw your post on the other thread about how most people underestimate calories, I know I have been guilty of that. And striving to find low calorie foods probably makes it worse. I am going to try and get a bit more truth back into my calorie counts. I will start by counting the "zero" pickles as 5 calories. I have also upped my guestimate a bit on the grapefruit I have been eating. No point in counting calories if you can't get them right.

Thanks Cate, and I had more flax seeds today. I do feel a bit more cheerful, will keep working on it. I really prefer feeling upbeat.

By the way: if you eat your flax seeds whole it's helpful to soak them beforehand. Unless you chew extremely thoroughly, that is. Your body can't "open up" whole, dry flax seeds to access the healthy fats in them. Glad you're feeling a bit more cheerful!

Not a bad day, I ate well and maintained the new track, no artificial sweeteners, no diet soft drinks and more fat. My stomach cramps returned, not so bad as they were. I am going to try switching from broccoli and cauliflower to spinach or other less gas forming veggies, that might help. I am probably 90% better, so making progress. I gave up on the constipation and took some laxities, that helped, at least for the day...

Good point on the flax seeds, when these are gone I'll get some ground ones.

Well I went 51 calories, one grapefruit, over my budget. Not a lot but I think its the first time I have knowingly gone over. The flax seeds I ate were the last of the whole ones I have, maybe they past through mostly undigested, subtract the 55 calories for those out and I would have been ok... I know 50+ calories are trivial, just feeling a bit guilty about it. Otherwise I stuck to my new plan, more fat and a change to spinach rather than broccoli and cauliflower. I am feeling fine tonight.

Feeling fine is a good thing. Only time can tell if being a bit more flexible will work for you - and I hope it will!

So glad you are feeling better. I can't eat too much of the cruciferous veggies either or I get bad gas. I like making smoothies that are date sweetened as an occasional treat - they don't make me have sugar cravings afterwards. Mostly though my smoothies are fruit sweetened with berries so they are fewer calories. I hope you found the culprits and that you're all better now.

Not a bad day, I went 26 calories over, half a grapefruit, but that's not awful. Otherwise my eating was good, kept to my new plan pretty well and feeling better for it.

Well twice now, but this time it was a bit more planned, and not so worrisome. If I can average the 1750 I should be ok.

Hey Marsia, I think you are right, no cruciferous veggies for a couple of days now and I am feeling better. I have substituted spinach for broccoli and cauliflower. Only problem is spinach has almost twice the calories, maybe I can blame that for my going a little over... I doubt anyone has ever gotten fat eating too much spinach, LOL! The smoothies sound good, I have not had one in a long time.

That confused me so much but you must be counting cooked weight. Here are some suggestions from my favorite shouty parrot:
I love my broccoli, by the way, but 250 g of it is plenty and I can definitely not have it raw.

Rob glad you are finding and working on new approaches to maintaining your lifestyle and getting a little more fat in your diet.

It was a good day, I ate well, stuck to the plan and feel good tonight. Replacing the broccoli and relatives with spinach is feeling better, and so is eating a bit more fat. Stayed within my calorie goal today as well.
That confused me so much but you must be counting cooked weight.
According to the packages I buy 12 ounces (340 grams) of broccoli/cauliflower is 80 calories, 12 ounces of spinach is 120 calories, both frozen raw, pre-cooking. It may have to do with moisture content, I am thinking they can get more water to stay in the frozen broccoli and cauliflower. Thanks for the video, interesting.
Rob glad you are finding and working on new approaches to maintaining your lifestyle and getting a little more fat in your diet.
Thanks Petal, its always good to hear from you! Working at it is a good description, I suppose we will all always be "working at it". Or giving up, I don't suppose anyone ever really gets there, LOL!
