Alligatorob's Diary

It is probably better to bike the day after upper body rather than lower body, while you can adapt, extensive use of the same muscles on consecutive days is not ideal for recovery or performance. The exception would be if it is a light easy recovery style ride, which can enhance recovery through increasing blood flow through the muscles.

I really like the new angel numbers.

I think maybe you don't need as many calories because the calories you are eating contain all the vitamins and minerals your body needs to function properly. Long may it continue, regardless of the reason. You're making this dieting thing look easy peasy. :)

It was a good day, I ate well, but maybe did too much exercising.

First thing I went to the gym for another weight training session, it went well, did upper body muscles. Then I decided to take a walk. I have been eyeing the possibility of hiking up the canyon just above the house. So I decided to try the first part of the hike, most of it is under deep snow. The first part is mostly on pavement and not as steep. According to Google Earth I walked about a mile, all up hill with a 400 ft rise, average 8% slope. I was fine until I started home, had forgotten that walking downhill can be as hard or harder on the muscles as walking up. I made it home, but was pretty tired and now my leg muscles are hurting. I am sure I'll be ok, but maybe should not have tried weight training and hiking the same morning. The trail continues beyond where I turned around for another 2.2 miles, but it gets a lot steeper, an average of 26% and rises another 3,400 ft, and a lot rougher. As I said its snow covered now and won't be passable for a few months yet. Maybe I'll be able to do it one day. I'd like to. It is the closest hike to the house. However I have a long ways to go to be able to do that, and today taught me I need to take it slowly. The picture is looking back at the trail from where I turned around.

Thanks Trusylver, I will do that.

Liza, did you see that you posted the 2,000th comment on my diary! That ought to win you a prize of some kind.
You're making this dieting thing look easy peasy
Thanks Emily, but looks can be deceiving, I don't think its ever easy. However I have kind of settled into a more comfortable place.

Just noticed a problem, my calorie count is only 1,008 for the day, in my head I was thinking it was 1,108. Guess I better have a whiskey to bring it above my 1,100 target, or at least keep me from worrying about it. I guess worse things could happen, but I do want to get the calories up a little. The trainer at the gym gave me the same lecture y'all have been, eat more.

oh i did not notice that!! Maybe my prize was a happy weigh in this morning :)

That's so great to have a nice hiking place close to home. Always fun to have places to explore nearby. I hope you're not too sore this morning. But yes it can be tough sometimes when we set out on our walk and then we have to get back home and our energy is lower, or the walk home is harder, than we expected! It's not like a treadmill that we can just hop off! But yes hopefully you'll start to get a good sense of what a good amount is for you.

Increasing calories with whiskey made me smile...I'm glad you are trying to keep them up there and a whiskey after a tough walk sounds kind of nice, though there aren't many nutrients in there :)

I have kind of settled into a more comfortable place.
Brilliant - because it sounds so close to maintenance! :)
I'm really glad you got that outside RL voice about nutrition and not going too low on the calories - you really seem headed in good directions now - and I don't mean up the hill to see the view, though that's pretty good, too! Thanks for the photo. :)

It was a good day, I ate well, a few more calories, and I feel pretty good. No formal exercise but I spent about 8 hours doing yard work. Got me pretty tired. I planted an apricot tree, put in a bunch of drip irrigation things, and mulched a lot of the garden. It was a really warm day, for so early anyway, got up to probably 60 F (15 C), warmest day so far. Tonight it is starting to rain and tomorrow will be colder. Went out to dinner and had a really nice shrimp & citrus salad.
Sounds like that first mile would be something you could do once a weekor so ro a) get used to walking up/downhill and b) check your endurance.
That makes sense, I probably will go that way. And I'll try to make it day without much other exercise. Maybe I will try to push a little farther up the hill each time. After that first mile it gets steeper and rougher fast.
The tough part for me is getting to the gym. Once I'm there it goes pretty quickly.
I am lucky, the gym is less than a mile from home. Makes getting there easier.
I like the idea of a whisky to get your calories up
So did I! Highly recommended. Actually its the first alcohol I have had since my trip, I am not drinking very much.
Maybe my prize was a happy weigh in this morning
I am sure it was the post, well your sticking to your diet and exercise may have had a little to do with it! No I am not too sore, thanks for asking. Some being sore gives me a sense of accomplishment, so I can live with a little.
I'm really glad you got that outside RL voice about nutrition and not going too low on the calories
Thanks Amy, yes I am going to try and bring them up a little and see what happens. Can't hurt, might help.

Nice angel number and great sounding day! 8 hours in the garden--wow! Big beginning! Nice start for another season! Do you do all the gardening at your place or does your wife do some as well?

Lovely about the calories coming up. Yes definitely can't hurt at all and I think might very well help!

I'm glad you are taking in some of the encouragement aka nagging to eat some more calories but will be happier when they go up a bit more. 8 hours in the garden is amaaazing. Care to visit?

Rob what a day , planting trees and irrigation work , mulching and all finished with a dinner out . Sounds wonderful .
Hoping all the green fingers here rub off on me as we quickly get to spring .

absolutely! I always find my knees hurt on the way down. Up is ok but it’s the jarring that gets me. One tip for walking downhill ... tie your laces a little tighter than normal. The pressure of your feet sliding forwards and wreak havoc on your tootsies!

It was a good day, I ate well, got some exercise and feel good.

Another day of work around the house, did a little gardening but spent most of the day building a workbench. The table that we have been using for outdoor wet kinds of things died this winter and needed replacing. Now I have a bigger better one. All in all it was about 8 hours of mixed labor, not quite as intensive as the gardening yesterday, but good work.
Do you do all the gardening at your place or does your wife do some as well?
No, I don't do it all. My wife does some, different things than I do, she pays more attention to the flower garden, I tend to do the trees and lawn. We both work on the vegetable garden, when it's warmer. Some days I hire a neighbor kid, a high school student, to help, did that yesterday. Those are my hardest days, I feel the need to try and keep up with him and that's hard. This year I am doing a much better job of it than last.
aka nagging
I never think of it as nagging, I appreciate knowing someone cares. And I know you do. And you are patient about waiting for it to sink in!
Good calories, good protein! I even like today's angel number!
Thanks LaMa!
An apricot tree sounds promising
I hope so, here it takes about 3 years before you get much if any fruit, so it won't be right away. In addition to our 108 peach trees we have 2 older apple trees and 2 pears and a cherry tree that will be 3 years this season. The apricot will fill a bit of a fruit gap in between the cherries and the peaches, hopefully.

Thanks Petal, not sure how green my fingers are, some things work, some don't but I enjoy trying. Last year our peaches did real well, some of our vegetables did well, and the apples were ok. Hope to do as well this year. Do you grow fruits or vegetables?

Missed TM, thanks for the advice on shoe laces and downhill walking. I probably need to get some real hiking boots if I am going to keep doing this, I think that would help with the downhill and a lot of it.

"Taking on life with optimism" is certainly something I could do more of!
Nice to hear about another good day Rob. A real sense of accomplishment getting a new table built I'm sure!
What do you do with all those peaches? Do you have a fruit stand?

I absolutely love my hiking boots, Rob. They are Scarpas. I feel really supported in them when walking on rough ground, which is what our land is. I'm glad you know we care & it's not nagging, btw :)

That and making sure you feather the impact in your knees. Don't land on a straight knee and suddenly you have a movement that's interesting for your muscles instead of hard on your joints.
Not a lot of protein yesterday?
