Alligatorob's Diary

Hehe Rob I love the way you connect to his name . We will need to find you a new connect later. Mittens are a good idea.

Rob I meant to say I watched the next part of that programme through the Americas. It was on California. Most beautiful scenery and weather. Fabulous orange groves. However lots of disturbing parts , the fires , the way the area has depleted of water, the homeless people in los Angelas and San Francisco. Versus the people with serious wealth. Interesting place where folk live off the grid too ,Slabcity . Next episode is down to Mexico .

Hey Rob,

move just caught up on your diary. You’ve done some amazing work!

that lake looks beautiful.

to chime in about calories burned on the bike; it’s always guess work. The best way is to invest in a heart rate monitor and power meter but the power meter will easily cost you $500 US. Not worth it in my opinion. There’s no simple calculation because it depends on your body and the bike you’re riding; geometry, gears etc and the terrain you’re riding on.

Apparently Henry VIII was a huge man.

But yeah, was ‘fat’ back then the same as fat nowadays? I’m not so sure.

Well done on the bike ride, there’s no stopping you now!

40 laps, but it was not much fun, cold about 32 F (0 C) and quite windy, but I found some mittens and a warm hat and I did not freeze to death. Good to be back up to 40. Now I am sure 40 of my laps is harder than a ride around the lake.

I have about decided that the 40 will be my workout for now. No need to keep trying to set new records. A lap takes me about a minute, so 40 laps are about 40 minutes, a decent workout. It gets me breathing a bit and sweating. And I am tired when its done.

Rob, the getting less fat all the time. Is that a title?

40 laps on your gravel sound like they would be harder than the ride around the lake. It can also easily be broken up some days into parts. When it's just too cold or there's too much snow to ride, Rob do you have snowshoes & can walk, maybe up & down the hill and around your drive? I would imagine that would be great exercise. Does the snow get very deep?

that's not cold... considering the wind, that's FREEZING...!

in your biking, i have to ask.... how do you keep track of laps?

when i was swimming i always lost track... luckily when i was at the Y sometimes there was a big clock poolside and i could get close with a little math... my lap time even over a mile+ was pretty consistent. in biking i rarely lapped anything except the bay, ...and that was easy... one & done.

Not very well, I think I probably under count a little. Whenever I lose track I always go back to the last number I was sure of and count from there, so I probably do a few extra, I am sure its not an over count. Precision in counting probably isn't too important.

Maybe compared to where you live now, but if I remember right you grew up in a place with very cold winters.
Does the snow get very deep?
Not really, not at our house. In the 2 1/2 winters we have been here the deepest was 2 or 3 feet, and its not continuous cover through the winter, it tends to warm up enough to melt off every few weeks. On the mountains, just a km or so away it gets a lot deeper. I did once have snowshoes, I am not sure people still use them much, cross-county skis seem to have replaced them. Thanks for the suggestions, just walking in the snow can be good exercise.

well, i'm glad i'm not alone there.. lol. in cooking i sometimes resort to bizarre behavior. when i make a double shortbread recipe it takes over 10 cups of flour so i often line up a row of pennies and move one at a time each cup i add. i'm still ok with remembering behavior a few seconds old.

oh, i've been in severely cold weather, but i think when you move to a warmer climate, your perception of temperatures shifts. you can tell the first year residents here who have moved from the northern border states. in December they'll be wearing shorts and t's on the low 50° nights while i'll have at least a sweatshirt on. if it gets into the 40's i'll break out the old scarf. pretty sure i could take real cold again. i actually prefer cold to hot... you can usually get warmer when it's cold easier than you can get cooler when it's hot.

i have to consider that even though i've basically leveled off, i probably have about 4-5% less insulation than last winter.

It was a good day, the cold bicycle ride was fine. Tomorrow it's supposed to be even colder and snowing, guess I will just play the bike ride by ear. If it looks like my ear will freeze off, I may cut it short. Flyer, if I had to make something that called for 10 cups or teaspoons or whatever of anything it would end up being a WAG! Your penny idea is good.

"The message, encoded in Angel Number 1069 relates to the field of personality development and creativity and says that Your personal growth, expressed in the ability to feel and understand people, is gaining strength. It is possible that in the foreseeable future this skill will become your second job (psychology, spiritual mentoring). Moreover, this job will represent no material interest for you. Whatever you do, you will do it solely for the good of others. Their gratitude will be your only "profit". " Not a bad Angel Number. I tried to do some research into what Angel Numbers are and where they came from, but could not find anything authoritative. Here is one thing I kind of liked "Though we all have angels around us all of the time, our guardian angels do not always communicate with us in simple or clear ways that are easy to interpret and understand." Certainly true for me, I am yet to really understand any of this.

I haven't been tempted to look up what angel numbers are meant to be about until today. I don't think I would ever understand airy-fairy concepts like angels but I do find your snippets amusing & entertaining. I agree with Rob that eating more fat & fewer carbs would be better (& more protein) but also consuming more calories. How about adding some avocado and/or nuts?

Rob I used to walk laps and I alwaays lost count. As you say precision doesn't matter really. Overlandflyer I have been absolutely freezing this winter thus far and my sister pointed out to me it's the weight loss and I never thought of that.

Good point! So by the same token, summers should be much less trying - for which (prospective) relief, much thanks! :D

I agree, Rob that there's
No need to keep trying to set new records.
when what you're doing is working well. Two or three feet of snow sounds a lot to me - yes, I'd think a forty minute walk through that, snowshoes or not, would be all the workout anyone would need! :)

Hey Rob,

mid you’re having trouble keeping track of the laps why not download a gps app on your phone. It won’t tell you your lap numbers but it’ll give you the distance and speed etc. I started off using an app called “gps speed” which was good but I now use strava because it actually tracks your route and acts like a social media account where you can follow other users from around the world and see their work outs etc etc. I initially resisted Strava because it encourages competition and I saw myself getting consumed by the competition and not enjoying the ride but that never happened.

I think you’d enjoy strava actually and it might help you find other places to ride too (you can see “segments” where other people have ridden). You can pair it with a cycling computer or just record from the phone (battery lasts a LOT longer on a cycling computer - my iPhone 8 battery only lasts about 4 hours recording from strava). Strava can also estimate calories burned but in your words it’s a WAG

if i had to point to any downside of weight loss, i now also find drives over an hour or so to be slightly less comfortable... i need to invest in a seat cushion... my butt is too bony...! poor me, eh? ...lol

Winter is here, it's 25 F and snowing, our high today is just supposed to be 26 F, and tonight's forecast low is 8 F (-13 C). I do plan to try and ride the bike, at least a little to see what it's like. I need to be able to ride in the cold this winter.

Flyer and Petal, I agree, I can feel the loss of insulation. And Flyer, it is also getting more uncomfortable for me to sit on a hard chair. Just minor things though in comparison to benefits. My tractor is a good example, it fits me better now, a good gap between me and the steering wheel, and the lower levers are getting easier to reach.
I don't think I would ever understand airy-fairy concepts like angels but I do find your snippets amusing & entertaining.
Oh, I guess they are a response to our natural desire to explain things, get direction, and see into the future. I also find them entertaining, I have always read my horoscope when I saw it. And I've paid a few fortune tellers at fairs. Never much believed any of it, but always entertaining. I think these things can be a kind of oracle.

Rob that looks nice cold fresh day . Be nice to be good and cosy in doors .
I can take the loss of insulation . I actually found a nice outdoorsy coat I bought 4 years ago and wore it this eve for a quick trip to town and it zipped up loads of room as opposed to not zipping last time I tried it .
There is a big belief in angels here in Ireland and also psychics . It’s believed we are all surrounded by angels and even some by arch angels . I don’t personally believe it. Books have been written about it .

No bike ride today. The wind is howling and its getting colder by the minute. Forecast for tonight is getting lower.
sinks.jpg
Fortunately we are not in Peter Sinks, but its only about 40 miles from here. It appears they set a US all time record low for the month of October, and the forecast is for colder tonight. Combined with the wind this is a killer. Not what October in Utah is supposed to be.
